Does anyone know a free software that can automatically take and save screenshots of the active window only? Perferably capable of saving images in PNG format as well.

If you use Windows Vista/7, there is a snipping tool, which allows you to capture a window. It can also save to a PNG format.

Maybe Fraps?
It has a free version that does what you ask, iirc purchase is only needed for the video capturing function.

I have fraps full version, but the window I'm trying to capture is not directX based.
