"Hayate, over here!" Fate called, waving.

The Wolkenritter mistress spotted the quintet at the large restaurant table, and smiled and waved while heading over that way, most of her own entourage in tow. "Hey guys! It's been awhile, huh?"

Suzuka slid closer to Arisa in the large booth, leaving room for Hayate, Signum, and Shamal. Vita, Rein and Agito (the latter two in their large forms), took chairs. The time had come once again for their annual get-together on Earth, where they'd share a meal together in a nice restaurant, courtesy of Arisa and Suzuka.

"Vivio, honey, did you decide what you wanted yet?" Nanoha inquired towards her daughter sitting between her and Fate.

"Not yet!" she chirped back, more interested in happily coloring her kid's menu then in looking over the meal choices.

"I'm just glad almost everyone was able to make it," Fate added, then noticed some people was missing. "Where are Zafira and Arf? I thought she told me she would be arriving with him?"

"They said they'd be here," Shamal answered. "I got off the phone with them not long before we left and... wait, there they are!"

True to her word, the pair in adult human form had just entered, arm in arm, and were being shown to the table by a waitress. Fate sighed in relief that Arf had remembered to keep her ears and tail hidden; her familiar had a bad habit of letting them pop out whenever she was distracted, and Arf had been distracted for quite awhile now.

Zafira offered a short bow upon arriving at the table. "I apologize for being late."

"It was my fault, as I said I'd wait for the sitter so Chrono and Amy could have their own special night out," Arf explained with a sigh.

"I remember, our annual meetup tonight happened to fall on their anniversary," Nanoha noted. "I suppose it couldn't be helped. It's tough finding a time to meet all our schedules. Yuuno-kun couldn't make it tonight, either."

"I'll be right back, I just need to freshen up," Arf stated, avoiding sitting down. "Order for me if everyone else is ready before I get back."

He nodded and sat down, ignoring the smirking looks he was being given, opting instead to focus on the menu that the waitress had just provided.

"Hey, why did I get this?" Vita groused, frowning while holding up the offending item.

"That's our super special kid's menu, for special little girls like you and your friends!" the waitress gushed, patting the increasingly agitated girl's head.

Hayate coughed politely, but more to hide the emerging giggle than anything else. "Um, thanks for that, but she's a big eater, so could we could get an adult menu for her, please?"

The waitress appeared a bit confused, but nodded, and then excused herself. The table dissolved into a round of giggles as soon as she was out of earshot.

"Suzuka, I will watch her, as I do not want to strain your bank account due to how much she consumes," Signum teased with a small smile.

"You don't have to tell me," the purple-haired girl stated, getting in on the fun. "I took out a home equity loan on our mansion just in case, though, in preparation for tonight."

"Knock it off, I told you I'm a growing girl," Vita grumbled, then decided to deflect the conversation to someone else. "So, Zafira, how long have you two been together again?"

The guardian beast figured this was coming, and so tried to appear calm and nonchalant as he studied the menu. "It has been about a month, since the bitch and I have been together."

The table immediately went deathly silent.

"I'm not sure I heard you correctly," Fate stated carefully.

Zafira looked up and blinked. "What? I said my bitch and I have been together for about a month."

Arisa snickered, but Suzuka blinked and stared. "You call her your..."

"Bitch, yes," Zafira stated, looking more and more confused. "Is it too soon for that? I admit us getting together was a bit sudden, but it was her that made the first move, so I had no choice but to make her my bitch."

"Zafira..." Hayate warned.

By now, the entire restaurant had become much quieter, and stares were being directed at the corner booth table. Fate tried to cover Vivio's ears, but it was too late.

"Nanoha-mama, what's a bitch?" the little girl questioned with pure curiosity.

"I'll, uh, try to explain later," Nanoha deferred with a sigh.

"So, um, I take it everything is going okay, then?" Suzuka tactfully asked, trying to alter the course of the conversation.

"For the most part, but I do admit it can be difficult sometimes," Zafira admitted. "Particularly when the bitch is in heat."

Suzuka sweatdropped while Arisa slapped hands over her mouth, trying desperately not to dissolve into full-blown laughter. However, a few giggles did manage to escape. Shamal sighed and Signum focused on the menu; this wasn't her problem to deal with.

"You are an incredibly rude young man," a mature women from the next table snobbishly informed him. "I do hope your woman realizes what kind of man you really are and leaves you for someone better."

"I believe hat is up to me and my bitch," Zafira pointedly informed her.

Hayate finally decided enough that was enough and stood. "Zafira. Outside. Now."

Stares accompanied the young woman pulling the larger man out of the restaurant by his ear, while Arisa could no longer contain herself and doubled over, pounding the table in laughter. The other members of the party sighed or otherwise tried to hide themselves, while Arf finally returned and asked what was going on.

"Oh, your boyfriend got himself into a bit of trouble," Shamal answered. "So Hayate had to take him outside lest he embarrass us further."

Arf frowned and glanced out the window. "Figures. That dumb bastard."

Zafira sighed. "Yes, I understand. I'll never understand humans."

Hayate nodded, satisfied, and turned to head back in. "Good, let's go."

"Um, just one more question," Zafira said, scratching his head as his mistress paused hesitantly. "Can I at least do something about that other rude bitch?"

Hayate fell over.

So here's my take on the whole Vivio/Hayate thing.

“Here are the reports you asked for, Commander Hayate.” Vivio said as she plopped a stack of papers down onto Hayate’s desk.

“Thanks, Vivio.” Hayate smiled at the younger girl. “I knew I could count on you.”

It had been over a year since Vivio became Hayate’s subordinate. The teen had decided to enlist in the Bureau rather than attend high school, much like Hayate herself had done all those years ago. Vivio was already bright, a pro at research, and a valuable asset on the battlefield so Hayate made sure to snap up such a talent for herself. The addition bore fruit quickly and the commander soon found herself with an excellent aide.

Something had been amiss during the past few days, though. Hayate noticed how Vivio seemed to be keeping her distance and became kind of antsy while in Hayate’s presence. Even now as the brunette studied the blonde, Vivio squirmed in place and avoided eye contact when she wasn’t taking quick peeks.

“Say, Vivio, has there been something bothering you lately?” Hayate asked. The well being of subordinates was part of her job as well, but she also had a far more personal investment. She had known the girl since she was a toddler and considered her valuable family. Vivio was usually so cheerful so seeing her like this was most upsetting.

“I’m fine.” Vivio waved it off but the way her eyes darted to the left was an obvious tell.

“Don’t give me that.” Hayate wagged a finger. “I can tell something is on your mind. I may be your superior, but I’m also kind of like your aunt. You can talk to me about anything.”

“… Anything?” Vivio asked sheepishly.

“Anything.” Hayate nodded while wearing a reassuring smile. “You don’t need to worry about me judging you or telling anyone else, so spill.”

“Okay.” Vivio gathered up her resolve and looked Hayate in the eye. “Hayate-san, I’m in love with you!”

“Can’t say I blame you, I’m so gorgeous and all.” Hayate laughed. “No, seriously, what is it?”

“I’m being completely serious.” Vivio said firmly.

“… Really?” Hayate blinked.

“Yes. I love you, Hayate-san!”

Hayate’s eyes widened slightly before narrowing a bit. It was quite clear that Vivio was dead serious. Hayate would have to handle the situation as delicately as she did hostage negotiations or asking for an increase in budget.

At that moment Hayate thought she’d rather be doing those other two things. Matters pertaining to love were never easy.

“I’ve had a crush on you since I was twelve.” Vivio explained. “I thought it was just that and figured it would pass in time, but it hasn’t. Recently I realised these feelings for you are true and I didn’t know how to approach you…”

“And you’re sure it’s me?” Hayate asked.

“Yes.” Vivio nodded firmly. “You’ve always been so cool but at the same time you’re warm and approachable. Working for you the past year has let me see how serious and mature you can be but you can quickly revert back to the happy and fun loving person I’ve always known. You’re just so amazing! You’ve always been nice to me, it feels so wonderful to spend time with you, and…” Her face turned crimson. “… It feels good when you touch me…”

Hayate never thought her groping would backfire on her so spectacularly.

“So…” Vivio looked up hopefully. “I… I want to go out with you… Can I?”

Hayate took a deep breath and decided on her words. “I appreciate your feelings, Vivio, but I’m sorry that’s just not possible.”

Vivio’s face fell for an instant before displaying the trademark Takamachi determination.

“Why not?” She asked. “Is it because of the difference in ages?”

“That’s one aspect.” Hayate said.

“That’s not a problem! Strictly speaking we’re both official residents of Earth and romantic relations are one of the issues covered under the Bureau law that won’t punish us for following the standards of our home country. In Japan a girl of 16 can marry if she has her parents’ permission. If we talk to Nanoha-mama, I know we can convince her!”

“Hmm…” Was all Hayate said.

“So what other problem is there? Our positions?” Vivio went on. “There’s nothing in Bureau policy that forbids superior-subordinate relationships. Just look at Chrono-san and Amy-san! But if it will cause problems for your reputation I can resign!”

“No need to go that far.” Hayate said.

“Then there’s no problem.” Vivio beamed.

“Listen, Vivio, I’m flattered, really I am, and I care about you a lot too, but you’re the daughter of one of my best friends. I’ve known you since you were six and I consider you to be a valued member of my family. I can’t see you in a romantic light any more than I could see any of my own kids that way.”

“You won’t know until you give it a chance.” Vivio said. “Please, Hayate-san, don’t give up before even trying!”

Hayate sighed at the girl’s persistence. She was her mother’s daughter all right.

“There’s one other thing you have to consider, Vivio.” Hayate mused that she should probably have brought it up at the start.

“And what’s that?”

“I’m straight.” Hayate said it gently and let the words sink in. “I don’t see other women that way.”

Vivio opened her mouth but Hayate held up a finger to silence her.

“I grope other girls as a sign of affection, not to sate any kind of sexual lust.” Hayate watched as the gears turned in Vivio’s head, clearly trying to form some kind of rebuttal.

“… Still, if you gave it a try maybe…”

“Vivio, now you’re being unreasonable.” Hayate smiled sympathetically. “People can’t just change their sexuality so easily whenever it’s convenient. I’m sorry but it’s just not possible for me to return your feelings.”

Vivio opened her mouth again but closed it and dropped her head so her bangs covered her eyes. After a moment she came back up with a sad smile on her face.

“I see.” She said. “I guess there’s nothing I can do then but it was worth a shot. I suppose I expected this, but I just had to get this off my chest. I’m sorry for springing this on you so suddenly, Commander Hayate. Now if you’ll excuse me…”

Hayate watched her go, wondering how far she would get before she couldn’t hold back the tears. Hayate wanted to go after her, to hug her, stroke her hair, tell her it was okay, but she knew that would only make things worse.

She hating thinking that she had just lost a precious loved one but she knew it had to be done.

Hayate busied herself with reading reports and soon an hour and a half passed. Factoring in explanation and travel time Hayate calculated she would have a vistor in 3, 2, 1…

“Hayate-chan, can I come in?” She heard a voice follow a knock.

“Come in, Nanoha-chan.” Hayate sat back as her friend entered. She gestured to a visitor chair and Nanoha sat in it. “I figured you’d come.”

“Obviously you know what this is about…” Nanoha smiled sheepishly. “She told me what happened when she got home. I know it’s really not my business, but… Hayate-chan could you maybe… reconsider?”

“I could reconsider but we’ll just end up at the same result.” Hayate sighed.

“Maybe you could change your mind? It would make her really happy…”

“Nanoha-chan, what do you want me to do.” Hayate threaded her fingers in front of her face. “Pretend that I return her feelings? Wouldn’t that be even crueller to her, living a lie like that? Pressuring me into it won’t make anyone happy either.”

“I know, I know…” Nanoha sighed. “It’s not fair to expect those things from you, but… My little girl is at home crying right now and… I just want to do something for her to make it all better…”

“That’s called being a mother.” Hayate dropped her hands and smiled. “I know how you feel since I’m a mother too. All you can do is be there for her and help her through this. Vivio is a strong girl and I know she’ll overcome this. She just needs some time and I’m sure she’ll find a new love before she knows it.”

“I hope you’re right.” Nanoha rose. “Thanks, Hayate-chan, for handling this so well.”

“I don’t know about that.” Hayate chuckled bashfully. “I was freaking out for a moment there…” Hayate shifted to a serious tone. “Tell Vivio that if she wants to submit a request for vacation time, or a transfer, or even resignation I’ll sign off on it right away.”

“I’ll tell her.” Nanoha smiled before leaving. “Thanks again, Hayate-chan. I’m glad it was you.”

Hayate watched her go, wondering how far she would get before she couldn’t hold back the tears. Hayate wanted to go after her, to hug her, stroke her hair, tell her it was okay, but she knew that would only make things worse.

She hating thinking that she had just lost a precious loved one but she knew it had to be done.

Hayate busied herself with reading reports and soon an hour and a half passed. Factoring in explanation and travel time Hayate calculated she would have a vistor in 3, 2, 1…

“Hayate-chan, can I come in?” She heard a voice follow a knock.

“Come in, Nanoha-chan.” Hayate sat back as her friend entered. She gestured to a visitor chair and Nanoha sat in it. “I figured you’d come.”

“Obviously you know what this is about…” Nanoha smiled sheepishly. “She told me what happened when she got home. I know it’s really not my business, but… Hayate-chan could you maybe… reconsider?”

“I could reconsider but we’ll just end up at the same result.” Hayate sighed.

“Maybe you could change your mind? It would make her really happy…”

“Nanoha-chan, what do you want me to do.” Hayate threaded her fingers in front of her face. “Pretend that I return her feelings? Wouldn’t that be even crueller to her, living a lie like that? Pressuring me into it won’t make anyone happy either.”

“I know, I know…” Nanoha sighed. “It’s not fair to expect those things from you, but… My little girl is at home crying right now and… I just want to do something for her to make it all better…”

“That’s called being a mother.” Hayate dropped her hands and smiled. “I know how you feel since I’m a mother too. All you can do is be there for her and help her through this. Vivio is a strong girl and I know she’ll overcome this. She just needs some time and I’m sure she’ll find a new love before she knows it.”

“I hope you’re right.” Nanoha rose. “Thanks, Hayate-chan, for handling this so well.”

“I don’t know about that.” Hayate chuckled bashfully. “I was freaking out for a moment there…” Hayate shifted to a serious tone. “Tell Vivio that if she wants to submit a request for vacation time, or a transfer, or even resignation I’ll sign off on it right away.”

“I’ll tell her.” Nanoha smiled before leaving. “Thanks again, Hayate-chan. I’m glad it was you.”

“Say, Vivio, has there been something bothering you lately?” Hayate asked. The well being of subordinates was part of her job as well, but she also had a far more personal investment. She had known the girl since she was a toddler and considered her valuable family. Vivio was usually so cheerful so seeing her like this was most upsetting.

“I’m fine.” Vivio waved it off but the way her eyes darted to the left was an obvious tell.

“Don’t give me that.” Hayate wagged a finger. “I can tell something is on your mind. I may be your superior, but I’m also kind of like your aunt. You can talk to me about anything.”

“… Anything?” Vivio asked sheepishly.

“Anything.” Hayate nodded while wearing a reassuring smile. “You don’t need to worry about me judging you or telling anyone else, so spill.”

“Okay.” Vivio gathered up her resolve and looked Hayate in the eye. “Hayate-san, I’m in love with you!”

“Can’t say I blame you, I’m so gorgeous and all.” Hayate laughed. “No, seriously, what is it?”

“I’m being completely serious.” Vivio said firmly.

“… Really?” Hayate blinked.

“Yes. I love you, Hayate-san!”

Hayate’s eyes widened slightly before narrowing a bit. It was quite clear that Vivio was dead serious. Hayate would have to handle the situation as delicately as she did hostage negotiations or asking for an increase in budget.

At that moment Hayate thought she’d rather be doing those other two things. Matters pertaining to love were never easy.

“I’ve had a crush on you since I was twelve.” Vivio explained. “I thought it was just that and figured it would pass in time, but it hasn’t. Recently I realised these feelings for you are true and I didn’t know how to approach you…”

“And you’re sure it’s me?” Hayate asked.

“Yes.” Vivio nodded firmly. “You’ve always been so cool but at the same time you’re warm and approachable. Working for you the past year has let me see how serious and mature you can be but you can quickly revert back to the happy and fun loving person I’ve always known. You’re just so amazing! You’ve always been nice to me, it feels so wonderful to spend time with you, and…” Her face turned crimson. “… It feels good when you touch me…”

Hayate never thought her groping would backfire on her so spectacularly.

“So…” Vivio looked up hopefully. “I… I want to go out with you… Can I?”

Hayate took a deep breath and decided on her words. “I appreciate your feelings, Vivio, but I’m sorry that’s just not possible.”

Vivio’s face fell for an instant before displaying the trademark Takamachi determination.

“Why not?” She asked. “Is it because of the difference in ages?”

“That’s one aspect.” Hayate said.

“That’s not a problem! Strictly speaking we’re both official residents of Earth and romantic relations are one of the issues covered under the Bureau law that won’t punish us for following the standards of our home country. In Japan a girl of 16 can marry if she has her parents’ permission. If we talk to Nanoha-mama, I know we can convince her!”

“Hmm…” Was all Hayate said.

“So what other problem is there? Our positions?” Vivio went on. “There’s nothing in Bureau policy that forbids superior-subordinate relationships. Just look at Chrono-san and Amy-san! But if it will cause problems for your reputation I can resign!”

“No need to go that far.” Hayate said.

“Then there’s no problem.” Vivio beamed.

“Listen, Vivio, I’m flattered, really I am, and I care about you a lot too, but you’re the daughter of one of my best friends. I’ve known you since you were six and I consider you to be a valued member of my family. I can’t see you in a romantic light any more than I could see any of my own kids that way.”

“You won’t know until you give it a chance.” Vivio said. “Please, Hayate-san, don’t give up before even trying!”

Hayate sighed at the girl’s persistence. She was her mother’s daughter all right.

“There’s one other thing you have to consider, Vivio.” Hayate mused that she should probably have brought it up at the start.

“And what’s that?”

“I’m straight.” Hayate said it gently and let the words sink in. “I don’t see other women that way.”

Vivio opened her mouth but Hayate held up a finger to silence her.

“I grope other girls as a sign of affection, not to sate any kind of sexual lust.” Hayate watched as the gears turned in Vivio’s head, clearly trying to form some kind of rebuttal.

“… Still, if you gave it a try maybe…”

“Vivio, now you’re being unreasonable.” Hayate smiled sympathetically. “People can’t just change their sexuality so easily whenever it’s convenient. I’m sorry but it’s just not possible for me to return your feelings.”

Vivio opened her mouth again but closed it and dropped her head so her bangs covered her eyes. After a moment she came back up with a sad smile on her face.

“I see.” She said. “I guess there’s nothing I can do then but it was worth a shot. I suppose I expected this, but I just had to get this off my chest. I’m sorry for springing this on you so suddenly, Commander Hayate. Now if you’ll excuse me…”

"Hayate, over here!" Fate called, waving.

The Wolkenritter mistress spotted the quintet at the large restaurant table, and smiled and waved while heading over that way, most of her own entourage in tow. "Hey guys! It's been awhile, huh?"

Suzuka slid closer to Arisa in the large booth, leaving room for Hayate, Signum, and Shamal. Vita, Rein and Agito (the latter two in their large forms), took chairs. The time had come once again for their annual get-together on Earth, where they'd share a meal together in a nice restaurant, courtesy of Arisa and Suzuka.

"Vivio, honey, did you decide what you wanted yet?" Nanoha inquired towards her daughter sitting between her and Fate.

"Not yet!" she chirped back, more interested in happily coloring her kid's menu then in looking over the meal choices.

"I'm just glad almost everyone was able to make it," Fate added, then noticed some people was missing. "Where are Zafira and Arf? I thought she told me she would be arriving with him?"

"They said they'd be here," Shamal answered. "I got off the phone with them not long before we left and... wait, there they are!"

True to her word, the pair in adult human form had just entered, arm in arm, and were being shown to the table by a waitress. Fate sighed in relief that Arf had remembered to keep her ears and tail hidden; her familiar had a bad habit of letting them pop out whenever she was distracted, and Arf had been distracted for quite awhile now.

Zafira offered a short bow upon arriving at the table. "I apologize for being late."

"It was my fault, as I said I'd wait for the sitter so Chrono and Amy could have their own special night out," Arf explained with a sigh.

"I remember, our annual meetup tonight happened to fall on their anniversary," Nanoha noted. "I suppose it couldn't be helped. It's tough finding a time to meet all our schedules. Yuuno-kun couldn't make it tonight, either."

"I'll be right back, I just need to freshen up," Arf stated, avoiding sitting down. "Order for me if everyone else is ready before I get back."

He nodded and sat down, ignoring the smirking looks he was being given, opting instead to focus on the menu that the waitress had just provided.

"Hey, why did I get this?" Vita groused, frowning while holding up the offending item.

"That's our super special kid's menu, for special little girls like you and your friends!" the waitress gushed, patting the increasingly agitated girl's head.

Hayate coughed politely, but more to hide the emerging giggle than anything else. "Um, thanks for that, but she's a big eater, so could we could get an adult menu for her, please?"

The waitress appeared a bit confused, but nodded, and then excused herself. The table dissolved into a round of giggles as soon as she was out of earshot.

"Suzuka, I will watch her, as I do not want to strain your bank account due to how much she consumes," Signum teased with a small smile.

"You don't have to tell me," the purple-haired girl stated, getting in on the fun. "I took out a home equity loan on our mansion just in case, though, in preparation for tonight."

"Knock it off, I told you I'm a growing girl," Vita grumbled, then decided to deflect the conversation to someone else. "So, Zafira, how long have you two been together again?"

The guardian beast figured this was coming, and so tried to appear calm and nonchalant as he studied the menu. "It has been about a month, since the bitch and I have been together."

The table immediately went deathly silent.

"I'm not sure I heard you correctly," Fate stated carefully.

Zafira looked up and blinked. "What? I said my bitch and I have been together for about a month."

Arisa snickered, but Suzuka blinked and stared. "You call her your..."

"Bitch, yes," Zafira stated, looking more and more confused. "Is it too soon for that? I admit us getting together was a bit sudden, but it was her that made the first move, so I had no choice but to make her my bitch."

"Zafira..." Hayate warned.

By now, the entire restaurant had become much quieter, and stares were being directed at the corner booth table. Fate tried to cover Vivio's ears, but it was too late.

"Nanoha-mama, what's a bitch?" the little girl questioned with pure curiosity.

"I'll, uh, try to explain later," Nanoha deferred with a sigh.

"So, um, I take it everything is going okay, then?" Suzuka tactfully asked, trying to alter the course of the conversation.

"For the most part, but I do admit it can be difficult sometimes," Zafira admitted. "Particularly when the bitch is in heat."

Suzuka sweatdropped while Arisa slapped hands over her mouth, trying desperately not to dissolve into full-blown laughter. However, a few giggles did manage to escape. Shamal sighed and Signum focused on the menu; this wasn't her problem to deal with.

"You are an incredibly rude young man," a mature women from the next table snobbishly informed him. "I do hope your woman realizes what kind of man you really are and leaves you for someone better."

"I believe hat is up to me and my bitch," Zafira pointedly informed her.

Hayate finally decided enough that was enough and stood. "Zafira. Outside. Now."

Stares accompanied the young woman pulling the larger man out of the restaurant by his ear, while Arisa could no longer contain herself and doubled over, pounding the table in laughter. The other members of the party sighed or otherwise tried to hide themselves, while Arf finally returned and asked what was going on.

"Oh, your boyfriend got himself into a bit of trouble," Shamal answered. "So Hayate had to take him outside lest he embarrass us further."

Arf frowned and glanced out the window. "Figures. That dumb bastard."

Here's a teaser to my contribution for the Vivio x Hayate trend. This is something of an unofficial continuation to deathcurse's HayateVivio stories though I propell things a couple of years into the future. First-lieutenant Vivio Takamachi-Harlaown was not enjoying herself.

This was perhaps not so surprising considering her situation. She was stuck between two piles of what once must have been brick walls while torrents of magic-infused bullets whined by her ears. Impressive blasts of echo-shells fell all around her, tossing sprays of shattered rock into the grey air and consequently into Vivio’s hair and barrier jacket. The pulverized stone made her itch in places she didn’t know she possessed but made the scorching lightning blasts more bearable. On the top of this, unadministrated world #62 was a humid planet covered by a lush, thriving jungle blessed with the fattest mosquitoes Vivio had ever seen. In other words, it was generally a great place to be if one wanted to feel like a butt. The one upside was really that none of the shooting was aimed at her, at least not yet.

Whatever command wanted them to accomplish here had better be decided quick. Vivio was trained for hard battles, not for sitting ducks while others killed each other. Watching the rebel fractions and the government forces hammer each other to pieces were truly starting to make her sick with frustration. Vivio was her mother’s daughter, and even if the Harlaown in her understood the tactical sense of awaiting precise orders the Takamachi in her had since long grown tired of the slaughter.

Unfortunately, the negotiations with the local authorities were going slow. Vivio understood the need to legalize TSAB interventions but she rarely agreed with the price. Behind every dead soldier was a family in grief. There would be a dead son or daughter, an orphaned child or a heartbroken mother and for them this war would never end. Most of all, there was the hatred that came with such sorrow. It irked her terribly that something as fickle as politics were stopping her team to act, but Hayate herself had taught Vivio combat tactics and so the young Takamachi held position and waited.

A steady, gloved hand on her shoulder shook her out of her miserable grouse.

“Easy kid, you look like the lady just spooked ya.” Officer Rhen said while crawling on all four beside her. His olive-tuned skin was covered in a fine patina of dust and mud, his otherwise blue barrier jacket looking none the better.

“Not me,” Vivio grumbled, wiping the dirt off her sweaty cheeks. “She’s getting a good harvest though, curse her fortune.”

Rhen barked out humourless laughter as he laid down face-up beside her, trying his best to not raise any limbs over the protective mounds. Among the Defence Corps Special Task Group, or the Hounds as they were called, ‘The Lady’ was how one referred to death with a capital D. Vivio could see how old dogs like Rhen would treat the metaphor with a near religious reverence. She was nineteen and two years in active interplanetary service had dragged her through her fair share of loss. Death in its simplicity and final silence was a constant presence in their work, and it only took so many deaths to make a soldier grateful for his life.

“Don’t curse her Takamachi, we don’t want her attention more than those poor suckers do. Just remember what to tell her when she comes for you.”

A fire shell exploded above their heads like thunder. The heatwave scathed against their necks, forcing them to bury themselves even deeper into the damp mud.

Vivio spat out the words with mud and saliva, grinning while she spoke: “Not today.”

“Indeed,” Rhen smiled with her while he clung to his device. “Knew you weren’t a baby-ace for nothing.”

Both their communicators came to life in a storm of static. Vivio felt her heart quicken at the familiar sound of her commanding officer’s voice coming through, announcing that their planetary presence was now considered legal. Finally! She listened carefully, meticulously, like she had been taught and forged since she was old enough to carry a device. She memorized the words, structuring them into her own orders as she assessed their position.

In short bursts of telepathy, she divided the tasks between her officers, a good squad of six, each with their own unique devices and specialities. Sacred Heart flared to life on her wrist.

“Panserschild!” Vivio shouted over the gunfire, boosting up her protective spell and covering as many of her men as she could while they plunged into action. The stark impact of a shell dented against her spell as her mind blanked into white, adrenaline kicked in instantly as Vita’s training took over. Her tracking spell sensed over a dozen of projectiles as her legs propelled her forwards between the trees. Half of them seemed to hit her shield.

Rhen, being second in command pulled her attention with a telepathic noise, saluting her with a small wave. Vivio nodded them off and the team split into two groups of three. She watched them disappear into the thick vegetation, wishing them success and safety with all her heart. Vivio gathered the remaining two of her team and set off, determined to accomplish their objective.

There would perhaps be a day when The Lady caught up with her. One day, she may be the one to stand amidst the droves of her fallen men and it would be her time to join those beyond the shade. That may be but not today.

Vivio thought of Hayate.

Not today.

I meant to write Vivio as an adult doing adult things with Hayate. Right now however, this is looking more like Saving Private Ryan. -_- Sigh.

Yeah, deathcurse made Vivio SWAT, so I upped her career a bit to something like Navy SEAL. xD

This is definitely more badass than Saving Private Ryan. Vivio's channelling enough grizzled old Solid Snake (probably all that imagery of crawling around at work here) to increase the franchise's testosterone levels by at least 10 folds.

She had known the girl since she was a toddler and considered her valuable family. Vivio was usually so cheerful so seeing her like this was most upsetting.

“I’m fine.” Vivio waved it off but the way her eyes darted to the left was an obvious tell.

“Don’t give me that.” Hayate wagged a finger. “I can tell something is on your mind. I may be your superior, but I’m also kind of like your aunt. You can talk to me about anything.”

“… Anything?” Vivio asked sheepishly.

“Anything.” Hayate nodded while wearing a reassuring smile. “You don’t need to worry about me judging you or telling anyone else, so spill.”

“Okay.” Vivio gathered up her resolve and looked Hayate in the eye. “Hayate-san, I’m in love with you!”

“Can’t say I blame you, I’m so gorgeous and all.” Hayate laughed. “No, seriously, what is it?”

“I’m being completely serious.” Vivio said firmly.

“… Really?” Hayate blinked.

“Yes. I love you, Hayate-san!”

Hayate’s eyes widened slightly before narrowing a bit. It was quite clear that Vivio was dead serious. Hayate would have to handle the situation as delicately as she did hostage negotiations or asking for an increase in budget.

At that moment Hayate thought she’d rather be doing those other two things. Matters pertaining to love were never easy.

“I’ve had a crush on you since I was twelve.” Vivio explained. “I thought it was just that and figured it would pass in time, but it hasn’t. Recently I realised these feelings for you are true and I didn’t know how to approach you…”

“And you’re sure it’s me?” Hayate asked.

“Yes.” Vivio nodded firmly. “You’ve always been so cool but at the same time you’re warm and approachable. Working for you the past year has let me see how serious and mature you can be but you can quickly revert back to the happy and fun loving person I’ve always known. You’re just so amazing! You’ve always been nice to me, it feels so wonderful to spend time with you, and…” Her face turned crimson. “… It feels good when you touch me…”

Hayate never thought her groping would backfire on her so spectacularly.

“So…” Vivio looked up hopefully. “I… I want to go out with you… Can I?”

Hayate took a deep breath and decided on her words. “I appreciate your feelings, Vivio, but I’m sorry that’s just not possible.”

Vivio’s face fell for an instant before displaying the trademark Takamachi determination.

“Why not?” She asked. “Is it because of the difference in ages?”

“That’s one aspect.” Hayate said.

“That’s not a problem! Strictly speaking we’re both official residents of Earth and romantic relations are one of the issues covered under the Bureau law that won’t punish us for following the standards of our home country. In Japan a girl of 16 can marry if she has her parents’ permission. If we talk to Nanoha-mama, I know we can convince her!”

“Hmm…” Was all Hayate said.

“So what other problem is there? Our positions?” Vivio went on. “There’s nothing in Bureau policy that forbids superior-subordinate relationships. Just look at Chrono-san and Amy-san! But if it will cause problems for your reputation I can resign!”

“No need to go that far.” Hayate said.

“Then there’s no problem.” Vivio beamed.

“Listen, Vivio, I’m flattered, really I am, and I care about you a lot too, but you’re the daughter of one of my best friends. I’ve known you since you were six and I consider you to be a valued member of my family. I can’t see you in a romantic light any more than I could see any of my own kids that way.”

“You won’t know until you give it a chance.” Vivio said. “Please, Hayate-san, don’t give up before even trying!”

Hayate sighed at the girl’s persistence. She was her mother’s daughter all right.

“There’s one other thing you have to consider, Vivio.” Hayate mused that she should probably have brought it up at the start.

“And what’s that?”

“I’m straight.” Hayate said it gently and let the words sink in. “I don’t see other women that way.”

Vivio opened her mouth but Hayate held up a finger to silence her.

“I grope other girls as a sign of affection, not to sate any kind of sexual lust.” Hayate watched as the gears turned in Vivio’s head, clearly trying to form some kind of rebuttal.

“… Still, if you gave it a try maybe…”

“Vivio, now you’re being unreasonable.” Hayate smiled sympathetically. “People can’t just change their sexuality so easily whenever it’s convenient. I’m sorry but it’s just not possible for me to return your feelings.”

Vivio opened her mouth again but closed it and dropped her head so her bangs covered her eyes. After a moment she came back up with a sad smile on her face.

“I see.” She said. “I guess there’s nothing I can do then but it was worth a shot. I suppose I expected this, but I just had to get this off my chest. I’m sorry for springing this on you so suddenly, Commander Hayate. Now if you’ll excuse me…”

Hayate watched her go, wondering how far she would get before she couldn’t hold back the tears. Hayate wanted to go after her, to hug her, stroke her hair, tell her it was okay, but she knew that would only make things worse.

She hating thinking that she had just lost a precious loved one but she knew it had to be done.

Hayate busied herself with reading reports and soon an hour and a half passed. Factoring in explanation and travel time Hayate calculated she would have a vistor in 3, 2, 1…

“Hayate-chan, can I come in?” She heard a voice follow a knock.

“Come in, Nanoha-chan.” Hayate sat back as her friend entered. She gestured to a visitor chair and Nanoha sat in it. “I figured you’d come.”

“Obviously you know what this is about…” Nanoha smiled sheepishly. “She told me what happened when she got home. I know it’s really not my business, but… Hayate-chan could you maybe… reconsider?”

“I could reconsider but we’ll just end up at the same result.” Hayate sighed.

“Maybe you could change your mind? It would make her really happy…”

“Nanoha-chan, what do you want me to do.” Hayate threaded her fingers in front of her face. “Pretend that I return her feelings? Wouldn’t that be even crueller to her, living a lie like that? Pressuring me into it won’t make anyone happy either.”

“I know, I know…” Nanoha sighed. “It’s not fair to expect those things from you, but… My little girl is at home crying right now and… I just want to do something for her to make it all better…”

“That’s called being a mother.” Hayate dropped her hands and smiled. “I know how you feel since I’m a mother too. All you can do is be there for her and help her through this. Vivio is a strong girl and I know she’ll overcome this. She just needs some time and I’m sure she’ll find a new love before she knows it.”

“I hope you’re right.” Nanoha rose. “Thanks, Hayate-chan, for handling this so well.”

“I don’t know about that.” Hayate chuckled bashfully. “I was freaking out for a moment there…” Hayate shifted to a serious tone. “Tell Vivio that if she wants to submit a request for vacation time, or a transfer, or even resignation I’ll sign off on it right away.”

“I’ll tell her.” Nanoha smiled before leaving. “Thanks again, Hayate-chan. I’m glad it was you.”

The Wolkenritter mistress spotted the quintet at the large restaurant table, and smiled and waved while heading over that way, most of her own entourage in tow. "Hey guys! It's been awhile, huh?"

Suzuka slid closer to Arisa in the large booth, leaving room for Hayate, Signum, and Shamal. Vita, Rein and Agito (the latter two in their large forms), took chairs. The time had come once again for their annual get-together on Earth, where they'd share a meal together in a nice restaurant, courtesy of Arisa and Suzuka.

"Vivio, honey, did you decide what you wanted yet?" Nanoha inquired towards her daughter sitting between her and Fate.

"Not yet!" she chirped back, more interested in happily coloring her kid's menu then in looking over the meal choices.

"I'm just glad almost everyone was able to make it," Fate added, then noticed some people was missing. "Where are Zafira and Arf? I thought she told me she would be arriving with him?"

"They said they'd be here," Shamal answered. "I got off the phone with them not long before we left and... wait, there they are!"

True to her word, the pair in adult human form had just entered, arm in arm, and were being shown to the table by a waitress. Fate sighed in relief that Arf had remembered to keep her ears and tail hidden; her familiar had a bad habit of letting them pop out whenever she was distracted, and Arf had been distracted for quite awhile now.

Zafira offered a short bow upon arriving at the table. "I apologize for being late."

"It was my fault, as I said I'd wait for the sitter so Chrono and Amy could have their own special night out," Arf explained with a sigh.

"I remember, our annual meetup tonight happened to fall on their anniversary," Nanoha noted. "I suppose it couldn't be helped. It's tough finding a time to meet all our schedules. Yuuno-kun couldn't make it tonight, either."

"I'll be right back, I just need to freshen up," Arf stated, avoiding sitting down. "Order for me if everyone else is ready before I get back."

He nodded and sat down, ignoring the smirking looks he was being given, opting instead to focus on the menu that the waitress had just provided.

"Hey, why did I get this?" Vita groused, frowning while holding up the offending item.

"That's our super special kid's menu, for special little girls like you and your friends!" the waitress gushed, patting the increasingly agitated girl's head.

Hayate coughed politely, but more to hide the emerging giggle than anything else. "Um, thanks for that, but she's a big eater, so could we could get an adult menu for her, please?"

The waitress appeared a bit confused, but nodded, and then excused herself. The table dissolved into a round of giggles as soon as she was out of earshot.

"Suzuka, I will watch her, as I do not want to strain your bank account due to how much she consumes," Signum teased with a small smile.

"You don't have to tell me," the purple-haired girl stated, getting in on the fun. "I took out a home equity loan on our mansion just in case, though, in preparation for tonight."

"Knock it off, I told you I'm a growing girl," Vita grumbled, then decided to deflect the conversation to someone else. "So, Zafira, how long have you two been together again?"

The guardian beast figured this was coming, and so tried to appear calm and nonchalant as he studied the menu. "It has been about a month, since the bitch and I have been together."

The table immediately went deathly silent.

"I'm not sure I heard you correctly," Fate stated carefully.

Zafira looked up and blinked. "What? I said my bitch and I have been together for about a month."

Arisa snickered, but Suzuka blinked and stared. "You call her your..."

"Bitch, yes," Zafira stated, looking more and more confused. "Is it too soon for that? I admit us getting together was a bit sudden, but it was her that made the first move, so I had no choice but to make her my bitch."

"Zafira..." Hayate warned.

By now, the entire restaurant had become much quieter, and stares were being directed at the corner booth table. Fate tried to cover Vivio's ears, but it was too late.

"Nanoha-mama, what's a bitch?" the little girl questioned with pure curiosity.

"I'll, uh, try to explain later," Nanoha deferred with a sigh.

"So, um, I take it everything is going okay, then?" Suzuka tactfully asked, trying to alter the course of the conversation.

"For the most part, but I do admit it can be difficult sometimes," Zafira admitted. "Particularly when the bitch is in heat."

Suzuka sweatdropped while Arisa slapped hands over her mouth, trying desperately not to dissolve into full-blown laughter. However, a few giggles did manage to escape. Shamal sighed and Signum focused on the menu; this wasn't her problem to deal with.

"You are an incredibly rude young man," a mature women from the next table snobbishly informed him. "I do hope your woman realizes what kind of man you really are and leaves you for someone better."

"I believe hat is up to me and my bitch," Zafira pointedly informed her.

Hayate finally decided enough that was enough and stood. "Zafira. Outside. Now."

Stares accompanied the young woman pulling the larger man out of the restaurant by his ear, while Arisa could no longer contain herself and doubled over, pounding the table in laughter. The other members of the party sighed or otherwise tried to hide themselves, while Arf finally returned and asked what was going on.

"Oh, your boyfriend got himself into a bit of trouble," Shamal answered. "So Hayate had to take him outside lest he embarrass us further."

Arf frowned and glanced out the window. "Figures. That dumb bastard."

“I’ll tell her.” Nanoha smiled before leaving. “Thanks again, Hayate-chan. I’m glad it was you.”

I liked how Hayate was kind but firm in pointing out that you can't just change sexuality that way. Although if she apparently has children in this story, shouldn't that kind of clue Vivio in that Hayate's probably not available?

Someone asked if there were gonna be any action in this. Some, but I wasn't planning on writing about Vivio deployed on badass STG Woof missions. It's mostly gonna be her and Hayate resolving some of their relationship issues and getting into trouble .

The basis for my story is that Viv and Hayate do end up together at some point between those four years of 15 to 19 though ^^;, so depending on how deathcurse's story goes this might end up an AU of an fanfic, sort of O_o. *shoots deathcurse meaningsful look*

Yeah, there are cases where the confessed to person will take advantage, sleep with the other person, and then say they don't return the feelings. That's why Nanoha thanked Hayate at the end.

Hm, well, with that line I was trying to show Hayate being supportive of whatever decision Vivio makes in order for her to move on. If she just needed time away from Hayate before returning to work, or if she wanted to not be around Hayate all together.

That would be my Behind the Smile where she uses the breast groping to make the guys at her school think she's a lesbian and leave her alone due to flashbacks of being raped as a child. She also supposes she does that because she's focused on other's bodies since she's disgusted with her own.

Maybe have Hayate say something along the lines of "I understand if Vivio wants some vacation time, to transfer units or resign. Please don't worry about anything if that's what she wants, I'll make sure it happens without marring her record..." instead?

By putting Hayate's understanding of the reasons behind Vivio's possibly needing some time away first, and the options second, it might show Hayate's sympathy better. That way you can keep Hayate's offer of making sure things are signed off well (which I understand as Hayate feeling a bit guilty and wanting to make sure that Vivio's okay) without making it sound like she's trying to get rid of Vivio.
