No, he didn't relate the cardigan to Mikuru at all, I think you should read our posts earlier in this thread, there's a whole big discussion on the cardigans.

I don't get how well this did in the poll, I found it to be incredibly boring to the extent that I think it's a joke put in to annoy people who watch in chronological order.

I mean, the whole episode was pretty much just going to get a radiator.

Well, not that this is an excuse, but this episode was based on an original story written by the author of the novels, Nagaru Tanigawa. Since the novels are narrated from Kyon's point of view, I think the author used this episode to portray a Haruhi story without Kyon.

Besides that, you can get glimpse at some interesting bits about Yuki (telling Tsuruya where Haruhi was, but not to Kyon; the cardigan) and the most obvious proof of affection coming from Haruhi towards Kyon (trying to put her cardigan on him). Also, couples walking down the same umbrella is a very romantic image in japanese culture.

Other than that, well, I think the author just wanted to free himself from the "Kyon must be there to tell the story" style, at least during this episode.

Something also of note is that Haruhi waited until Kyon was out before she began her Mikuru abuse. Does she not want to upset Kyon, does she not want him to experience Mikuru's moe power, or does she know Kyon will spoil her fun? Maybe some combination?
Also, watch Yuki when she's reading along in the clubroom with the radio on. She turns the pages much more quickly here than when the other members are present. Is she distracted because she's paying more attention to them than her book?

Though this episode lacks in having much of anything happening, it gives a lot of insight into how the characters have developed and how their relationships between each other have grown. Character development is not filler

...feels like we're ready for the movie lol.

I first watched the series chronologically and I didn't mind this as the last episode. It's not that bad of an ending but it definitely leaves you wanting more. Now with an actual sequel SitR will have something to lead into instead of just people saying it leads into Disappearance.

Hmmm, I also always tought she putting the cardigan around him was the simpler explanation and, therefore, to most probable to be correct. However, Kyon seens to be sleeping for a good time. Why would she wait so long? My guess is she was just waching him to sleep.

Never even considered that before.

Haruhi's embarrassed simply over the thought of being caught putting her cardigan on Kyon. I really think that's it.

We're not talking about Tsuruya here, who would just consider this a mildly caring gesture that doesn't need to mean much beyond that. With Haruhi, though, something like this is a significant gesture. It's enough on its own to make her feel embarrassed.

Since I hadn't seen it around the internet (and believe me, I looked for quite a while), I'll say that the script that Tanigawa wrote for this episode has finally been translated. Having checked with the staff, we can't say where to find it, but I'll give a little excerpt of what it looks like.

Kyon hangs onto one of the straps. The sky appears cloudy and dark.

○Literature Club’s room
After the photo shoot with the tree frog costume Haruhi next prepares the waitress outfit (used in The Adventures of Mikuru).

Haruhi "Look…Take it off! Take it off!"
Mikuru "Wa-wa-wa.. Wait! Cold!"

In no time at all Mikuru is stripped and seen topless. Or so we think as Nagato abruptly stops reading and places a book back in the bookshelves, hiding Mikuru's figure.

Haruhi (off) "Mikuru-chan, have you grown bigger? You look even more explosive!"
Mikuru (off) "Suzumiya-sa…No! Don't touch that… Ah"
Note: (off) refers to a character's voice that is heard when not in the image.

Nagato chooses a book and returns to her usual chair. After she removes the book, we are able to see Haruhi and Mikuru entangled again. But they aren't changing clothes anymore. All the audience can see is Haruhi running her hands through Mikuru's hair. Nagato, uninterested, suddenly goes back to reading.
The camera stays in the same spot (very cold natured).
