Yuuki Kaji isn't a bad VA; he just gets utterly terrible roles (Shoe, Fat Shoe).

Bad roles? I agree:
Issei Hyodo from DxD - because he's freaking hentai.
Haruyuki from Accel - short and fat boy which later turned into a badass.

From these stills, it doesn't look half bad, looking forward to see it in motion.

Well, the animation is certainly as good as the ads led us to believe, however the same was true with SAO and look at how A1 has slacked off since. But there's one big difference between the two shows -- as good as the animation was in the first episode of SAO, the direction was completely pedestrian, whereas here it feels like the director is auditioning for KyoAni or SHAFT.

As for the story, though ... I can't say that it hooked me. The world and characters seem interesting so far, but I have the feeling we're going to get several episodes of world building before the plot kicks in.

I'll watch the first episode soon as it's subbed.

But in the meantime...

It's a late "simulcast" though...

@lol never mind, it's an hour and a half after the regular premiere.

Doing experimental (or when it comes to this, "original") stuff is a rather big deal when it comes to Japan, I think. Breaking the norms is not something that is encouraged, at least.

I would love to see another visually unorthodox show being commercially successful, but I think the success will be limited to rave reviews.

(The above is just my admittedly pessimistic speculation premised on the belief that the visual style presented in the pictures posted here continues.)

I don't think the show is THAT experimental, the most out there thing is the total lack of shading, which is something that doesn't really annoy much people.

What I think, however, is that the show looks totally gorgeous. The animation is okay, I'd say above average even, and we're probably going to get many sakuga cuts, but the tone of the show takes the cake here.
It's also very nicely directed, I liked the storyboard, it gave the dialogue segments more dynamism and created a comfortable pace.

Err am I supposed to take that as a good thing seeing as how I associate both those with busy and distracting direction that smothers scenes rather than distinguishes and brings them to life.
