Well, it's hard to come to any conclusions. If you read the post prior to yours, you won't see Gundam AGE at all in the rankings. Nor will you see Mirai-Nikki, which premiered on the same day. Maybe this is because the ratings don't include those two shows yet, or maybe it's because the ratings are too low to count. I'm hoping it's the former (no matter my personal view on AGE, the last thing I want is for it to do so badly that it means it'll be years before we get a new Gundam show), but it's also possible it's the latter since the ratings are supposedly for the 3rd through 9th of October, and we have Hunter x Hunter on them (premiered Oct. 2), while Phi Brain is not (also premiered Oct. 2), suggesting a show must reach a certain threshold of viewers to bother listing.

I guess those who have a bone in how popular AGE is will have to wait till next week to shed some light on the situation. ie: If it still doesn't show in the ratings, then it becomes increasingly likely the ratings are really low, while if it does, then it's likely it simply wasn't rated for last week, dependent on what the rating is of course (ie: if next week it's 3.5%, then chances are it wasn't rated last week, while if it shows up as 1%, then it's possible it was rated and rated too low to show up).

I'm a little surprised that Un-Go and Guilty Crown had the same rating. GC seems like fairly standard otaku fare that would be gobbled up, whereas Un-Go is that quirky detective genre that usually doesn't attract much otaku viewers.

The list of ratings for the weeks of Sept. 26 - Oct. 2 and Oct. 3 - 9 are not complete yet. However, their top 10 is because it comes from Video Research, a verified source - if any other animated program had scored higher than the #10 on that list, it would have been in there. Precise ratings will be revealed whenever the usual 2ch poster pays the National Diet Library a visit (but only for TBS and TV Tokyo shows - Phi Brain is on NHK so that's a no go, Mirai Nikki airs on more obscure regional channels).

Oh, they most likely didn't. The number that is available is for the whole noitaminA timeslot, so it's an average of watchers calculated during this one hour that includes both shows. It is rare that we get detailed ratings for each series, though it happened for C & AnoHana at the end of last spring because AnoHana was a smash hit and there was this whole 'did it reach out to casual anime viewers?' debate, which led a magazine to study the ratings more thoroughly.

It only proves Gundam Age's first episode got between 0.0% and 3.8%.

UnGo probably rated better than GC since it aired before... this is pretty late... (didn't help it was 15 mins late) its like how C got better ratings than AnoHana...

HxH seems to be doing good. It had a bit of a drop from 4.4(1st ep) to 3.8 in the 2nd ep. But it's gone back up to 4.0 for the 3rd ep. With those ratings the series may go on for quite awhile. It's doing better all recent Shonen Jump anime adaptations except for that one ep Beelzebub recently got 3.9, Madhouse should be happy with the ratings HxH is getting for now.

Actually, given its channel and its time-slot, it's not doing that good.

Of course, Hunter x Hunter is an anime (they tend to get lower ratings compared to variety shows) and doesn't benefit from the 10-11 am slot. However, 3.8 to 4.4 still seems quite low. I would expect such a popular show to get ratings maybe a little lower than Toriko's (so around the 5.5 mark). With a 4.0 rating this week, Hunter x Hunter doesn't make the Top 10, and Doraemon and Shin-chan didn't even air !

H x H is old hat.

The manga is waayyyyy far ahead, why would average fans want to retread especially if they are older.

Frankly I am surprised there was such a remake so quickly, normally it's a remake of an older generational show for a new generation but HxH is not that far removed from it's predecessor.

12 -13 year olds were just toddlers when the first HxH aired so you could say they're a new generation.

Hm... I actually found some information on Hunter x Hunter's NTV affiliate airings... Interestingly enough, most of them seem to be airing the series late at night (around 1-3am). Not sure how much in a long run those would affect ratings in each area, but I can't imagine it being too good.

Well it goes to show you how the landscape has changed. One Piece only airs sunday morning in Kanto. Otherwise timeslots are all over the place.

With few exceptions the anime just doesn't rope in kids like it used to (not like Japan has many kids anyways) so it's low on the totem pole.

Nowadays, only the more family orientated anime air in the evening on the big channels (Fuji, NTV and Asahi). And only two actually still air during prime-time : Shin-chan and Doraemon (both on TV Asahi). It's a shame for the industry, but I guess it can't be helped...

Caught up with all the figures that were available. The weeks prior to the one in this post are now fully posted in the post at the top of this page. The partial ratings for the week of October 17 - 23 will be posted in a day or two.

In regards to HxH: I was also expecting slightly higher numbers, but all things considered, I think it's doing fairly well. The figures so far are: 4.4% -> 3.8% -> 4.0% -> 4.5% (yesterday's episode), which is surprisingly stable. With that said, it does not seem to be reaching out to kids: only 1.2% of them watched the first episode, as opposed to 2.3% of the teenagers, 2.5% of the males between 20 and 29, and finally 4.8% (!) of the 20~29-year-old females. I'm not actually sure this is what the producers are aiming for...

That's... really odd.

I wonder why a shonen series would have the appeal to the younger women crowd. Just seems random...
