VIA processors not dead apparently and other news.
Some of you guys maybe interested in this.
http://www.digitimes.com/mobos/a20070725PD206.html twice as fast as the old architecture meaning what? It'll be what, quick by P2 standards? Nice to see that they're sort of in the game but holy cow what an underwhelming development. Also I've heard a fairly disturbing rumour doing the rounds as well. Vienna (the successor to Vista) along with DX11 is already being planned for release in early 2009. Other important dates Nvidia's 9800 series due for release late October/early November. Will definitely be on shelves for the xmas shopping period. |

Yeah, VIA seems to specialise in small or embedded systems...like in closed circuit TV systems, where pure power isn't the most vital thing in the world.
Pico-ITX, anyone? Btw, do you have the source for the GeForce 9800 release? As for Vienna, I think it's a little unlikely for there to be a release in early 2009. There's just not enough time ... 1 and a half years? It seems highly unlikely to me...especially given the unspectacular pickup of Vista. Maybe late 2010 is a more reasonable timeframe. |

Actually if you consider nearly every new PC sold comes with vista, well I wouldn't say it's unspectacular.
http://www.xbitlabs.com/discussion/3953.html http://news.softpedia.com/news/NVIDI...ub-55548.shtml q4 release to coincide with crysis. Also not it's become general knowledge that Nvidia plan to release a flagship model every Nov-Dec. |

At any rate, we must all realize the reality of Vista. We have unofficially dubbed Vista the new "Windows ME." This is because Vista was released as a interim between Windows XP and Windows Vienna (2009). You can, in fact, still purchase machines with Windows XP on them - you just have to deal with companies that give you the option or build it yourself. The point is, do not get too comfortable with Vista - it will be replaced shortly. |

Vista never reached all the promises that Longhorn made though. WinFS would have been interesting. But if Vienna is going to have DX11, and the Geforce 9 series are going to be DX10.1 only, then well some people aren't going to be happy. Plus, there's no guarantee that there's going to be sufficient adoption of DX10 by that time anyway. edit: Anybody know anything about Intel's Larrabee Project since it was discussed some time ago? |

DX10 seems like some kind of industry joke. I mean, they just released DX10.1 and said it will be 'compatible' with DX10 cards but not with all of the features. Perhaps the industry needs some time to catch up with DX before they release again. |

Those only thing good about ME was the introduction of system restore, but it never worked. 98 was so much better. You could screw it up and as long as you had the installation CD you could reinstall the OS and all your old programs are back and running just like when you last booted correctly.
I'm glad I was right about the VIA processors. I knew I read that was what VIA chips were used for but couldn't remember exactly was the article said. |

Anyways, IIRC the VIA C3 & C7 chips perform comparably to PIII running at the same cpu speeds, so it should be enough to play regular DVDs and video files. Plus some mini-itx mbs already have built-in tv-out. |

Same speed? Not even close. I had a VIA C3 800Mhz processor, and it ran like a Celeron 300Mhz processor. It could decode a DVD all right and divx 3, but not divx 5 and 6 or xvid without dropping frames.
Via processors should remain for low processing stuff or simple stuff. Like basic MS Office stuff, surfing web, home NAS/File server/NAT kind of thing. |

Besides, mini-itx boards are usually picky with Linux.

AMD news not really verified but sounds about right. Looks like the beginning of a new price war. http://www.tcmagazine.info/comments....=15914&catid=2
