Alto VERY DEFINITELY has the earring with him when he goes...but man does it ever look like he got blown to smithereens. Seriously, the fold is just beginning to charge up when the missiles hit, and there's a mushroom cloud bigger than any three large cities put together.
I'm of the belief that the fold probably worked, but I don't think he'll ever be back, really...I assume he's hanging out with Shin and Sara.
And you guys are making MUCH too big a deal of Sheryl's glinting earring...it's just the light catching it briefly as she stirs a bit.
Other than that...I just wanted to say liked the movie even more the second time around. And Josue pointed out a guest appearance by Blackjack and Astro Boy!

Unlike Shinn and Sara, Alto has no reason for being there (where?). I don't see why he would not return if he escaped the explosions throuhg a legitimate defold process (yes I spoiled myself through many Chinese sites).
*shrug* But anyway, by now you probably realize that a majority of us simply don't share your morbid fascination with tragic outcomes.

Well, even if he doesn't return. Their feelings and minds can be connected through the earring, tbh. At least he seems to 'sense' her. Looks like a bittersweet comfort for the shippers.

Well, to be fair, I actually loved the ending to Macross Zero. Plus was alright, and seven was a smoldering mess that at the end, I wish all the mains were killed and the series declared non-cannon
I rarely indulge myself in his other works, with the exception to Aquarion, even though that was never really my cup of tea...

Guys only pretend to complain about shipping in their mecha because it reminds them that they're secretly watching a girly show. And, uh...first, we were talking about "bittersweet" endings, and Westlo could only get his count up to NEARLY fifty percent by selectively eliminating a bunch of shows that Kawamori created. If you're going to talk about TRAGIC endings, then the number is going to be much, much fewer.

And well people are making a big deal about that scene because it happens right after Ranka herself says "Sheryl will wake up when Alto comes back" that kind of thing is called a hint.
Yeah, it could mean nothing, but we can't deny that the people in charge put that scene precisely to give some kind of impression or something to think about to the people, I mean the movie could have ended without that scene since it's not that important, right? but again it's there for a reason.
Some will think "It's nothing" and others will think "That means Alto is alive/will come back" it's up to them, and after reading the interview posted by darkplataform where Yuuichi Nakamura said:
