Did anyone else notice Marias demeanor at the end of the episode? She certainly didn't seem happy to see Saki this time. Is this possibly the start of her campaign of death and destruction that was hinted at all the way back during the childhood arc?

She's still Satoru's grandma though just his great (multiplied by 267 years) grandma.

I have always guessed it had something to do with Mamoru. They kill Mamoru, she turns to a fiend killing countless people.

That was a flashback from the first part of the episode.

What to make about this episode? Hmm....

Tomiko nailed it right on the spot: Humans are themselves the worst enemies of humans. Add an in-born supply of endless energy into each of the remaining 5000-6000 individuals that still make the population of the Japanese archipielago, and you get a paranoid society forced to live on rules to prevent all the individuals from literally becoming machinex of Massive Apocalyptic Roaming Destruction everywhere.
