To fight Arf as Linith you just have to use Arf in all the battles of Sequence 3.

Anyways, back to my beloved laptop, I'm gonna make a rather long semi-review of the game plus the notable parts in each sequence. Plenty of spoilers and interesting tidbits for fanfic writers and OC-makers abound so watch out for it in an hour or two!

MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYONE!!! >:3

Well, I spent most of Christmas hanging out with my family in the province, eating and playing this game. While not the most enjoyable Christmas I've had it's loads better than the one I had last year where I had to work.

The Gears of Destiny is certainly one game you can tell the producers pulled out all the stops for. Polishing the experience from The Battle of Aces, the gameplay is much more challenging, fast and furious. And it's TONS more enjoyable because of that.

Below is the promised semi-review/synopsis categorized per 'Sequence,' which is basically story mode where you pick characters to play and/or characters to fight largely dependent on the scenario.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!

Spoiler for Sequence One:

1. The game kicks off with a flashback of Amitie and Kyrie when they were kids. The name of their dad is Grants Florian, an honest-to-goodness benevolent scientist using his research for a better world. They respect him and his profession so much so they call him Hakase (Professor) instead of dad.
   
   
   
2. We see the loli versions of the Florian Sisters talking. Chibi-Kyrie is pouting because the Professor is always busy. Chibi-Amitie tells her not to be selfish since Hakase is using his research for good things. They would just have to wait until they grow up so they can always be with him by helping him with his job. Kyrie cheers up and wishes to grow up faster.
   
   
   
3. Fast forward to the future, Amitie is pursuing Kyrie to stop her from causing any trouble. We can see that while the two got along well in their youth, Kyrie grew up to a sassy young rebel with a goal she'll stubbornly follow.
   
   
4. When I say sassy, she's literally seductive ear-candy for those who like listening to sugary-toned anime girls dishing out insults. She's gonna have a rather divided fanbase...
   
   
5. As for Amitie, or Amita as her close ones call her... Erm... Err... There's no other way to say it! No matter how you cut it, Amita's an idiot. She's a very active and passionate believer of the power of KIAI (Fighting Spirit), KONJOU (Guts) and NEKKETSU (Hot Blood). (No, I'm not kidding. She screams, "NEKKETSU~!!!" as one of her Full Drive one-liners...) She's the perfect example of a genderbent main character from any of the classic super robot series.
   
   
6. It's not really as bad as it sounds when you see her in action. Kyrie likes to taunt her but Amita proves to be one of the best big sisters ever over the course of the game. More on that on the next sequences.
   
   
7. Anyway, you control Amita vs Kyrie. When you win, Kyrie pretends to be beaten but has actually snuck a [Virus Bullet] to Amita. Little Sis Florian mentions it won't kill her since that would make Hakase sad. Big Sis Florian starts feeling the pain while Kyrie makes a run for it with a warning not to interfere.
   
   
8. Onto the next round, you get a choice to fight either Arf or Yuuno as Amita. Here you start seeing that Kyrie wasn't kidding when she calls her sister an idiot. Amita, you do NOT point your guns at people while shouting, "Please help me!"
   
   
9. Regardless, Amita collapses from the virus and comically falls from the sky after you win the match. Nanoha (if you fought Yuuno) or Fate (for Arf) will contact your opponent, talking about something like a dimensional disturbance. They all but forget Amita when Shamal calls them and reports an emergency... Poor redhead.
   
   
10. Next fight, you use Kyrie against either Hayate or Reinforce. Kyrie will demand that they hand over the Tome or else. It's a lot more serious if you fight Reinforce, with her being all gloomy and ready to accept her eventual end. If you fight Hayate, our little Kansai girl calmly figures out that Kyrie has actually mistaken her for Lord Dearche, aka Material-D.
    
    
11. Kyrie's reaction is hilarious after finding out Dearche was defeated 3 months ago from Hayate.
    Kyrie: N-no way! You're kidding.
    Hayate: I'm not kidding.
    Kyrie: Really, really...?
    Hayate: Really, really!
    Kyrie: NOOOOOOOOO~~~~!!!!!
    
    
12. Just then, after either Hayate or Reinforce gets to the scene Material-D does revive in all her evil overpowered glory. Amusingly, Hayate sounds like she's forced to go through an occasional nuisance instead of anything serious when she comments about the revival of her clone. Dearche gloats like any other evil emperor/empress and shouts, "Kneel before me!"
    
    
    
13. Hayate and Reinforce are suddenly caught in multiple long-ranged binds. (No CG though. I wanted to see-*SHOT*) They can't break free and are completely helpless, leading Hayate to realize that Dearche has powered-up from before.
    
    
14. Kyrie, finding her target tries to introduce herself but gets bound by Dearche as well for interfering her gloating.
    
    
15. Just as Dearche prepares to finish them off, Amitie arrives in a Big Damned Heroes moment. Kyrie is shocked that Amita has managed to get cured from the virus. But...
    Amitie: I didn't get an antidote.
    Kyrie: But... the virus!
    Amitie: Things like that... *CLANG!* Can be taken cared by KIAI! (Fighting spirit)
    Kyrie: Fighting spirit...?
    Amitie: Fighting spirit! With it overflowing from my body, a mere virus won't beat me!
    Kyrie: That's the same as the saying 'Idiots don't get colds!'
    
    
16. Anyway, our beloved Baka-neechan proceeds to wipe the floor with Dearche. After the battle, the virus is shown to be still affecting her. Seeing that she still won, that's quite a feat for out trusty redhead.
    
    
17. Dearche is surprised that she lost, revealing that a large amount of her power has been siphoned off by something between the match. Hayate and Reinforce are released from the binds and prepare to Unison as Dearche desperately tries to call time out.
    
    
18. Just when the tables have turned, Stern (Material-S) and Levi (Material-L) make their own dynamic entrance. Dearche identifies them by their real names and the two only then realize that they do have proper identities instead of just being Materials.
    
    Then the next part comes, complete with a complete pause in the BGM.
    Dearche: Wait a sec... Did you two just revive now, causing me to lose monopoly on all that energy earlier?
    Levi: Huh? Yeah.
    Stern: Oishiku itadakimashita. (Thanks for the delicious meal...?)
    Dearche: YOU IDIOTS!!! I could have finished these insects earlier! Pick a better time and place to revive!
    
    
    
19. Oh yes, this is the first indication of the utter wackiness the Materials will provide across the story. Anyway, Levi claims that their revival wasn't through their own will and Stern elaborates that it was like something summoned them.
    
    
20. In the confusion, Kyrie does a sneak attack and wounds Reinforce (Yup, the girl's gonna start getting haters). She introduces herself to the Materials and clues in that she knows how to bring out the program behind the Darkness of the Book of Darkness. "Kudakeenu Yami" (Unbreakable Darkness), alternatively System U-D.
    
    
    
21. Dearche becomes interested and welcomes Momoiro (Pinkie) into the party. They fly off, with Amitie in hot pursuit.
    
    
    
22. Hayate acknowledges the gravity of the situation. Since many of her allies are in different places, only Nanoha, Fate, Yuuno and Arf are available right now and decides to contact them for help. This ends the first sequence and raises the curtain for this grand act...

This is gonna be WAY longer than I imagined... Change of plans, I'm gonna make multiple posts per Sequence and then just organize them later with hyperlinks. We have 12 Sequences in total so that will be another 12 posts, including my final comments.

If Dearche was really monopolizing all the power of the "Darkness" of the Book of Darkness it makes sense that she overpowered Hayate and the weakened Reinforce as IIRC the original Defense Program took the combined effort of ALL the main cast just to knock it out enough time to be wiped out by the Arc-en-Ciel xDU

MGLN A's Portable: THE GEARS OF DESTINY

Sequence 2 & 3

I'll be commenting on sequences 2 and 3 this time. Let's start! >:3

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

Spoiler for Sequence 2:

1. In the first match, you have the choice of using Nanoha or Yuuno in against Amita. Nanoha has a silly misconception that Amita could be speaking in another language right after responding normally.
   
   
2. But the star of this sequence in humor is definitely Yuuno. Poor kid just can't get a break. If you pick him, he starts by remembering that Amitie needed medicine and asks if she's alright. Of course, our resident Baka-neechan says that her fighting spirit to power through it. Completely defying expectations, she goes into a long technobabble tirade on how her burning KIAI can cure her, ending with the statement, "NAISU desuyo, watashi no karada!" (Nice, my body!)
   
   
3. Yeah, Amita has some lapses to Engrish as well. But that's why she's all the more amusing. Anyway, after beating her, she says she really can't stay and explain and shows one of the abilities of her class: Accelerator. It's basically super speed like Sonic Move but is used in more situations. If she escapes from Nanoha, Amita even goes, "TOOH!!!" while escaping like your classic Japanese superheroes.
   
   
4. Next match is either Nanoha or Yuuno against the Lieze twins. They were supposed to have been relieved of their duty with former-Admiral Graham but they were pulled in by Admiral Leti Lowran to handle the situation. The Dark Pieces from the previous game are on the rise again and the twins mistake Nanoha/Yuuno for one.
   
   
5. As usual, it's funnier for Yuuno since Lotte is furious since she thought that her 'aisuru nezumi-ko' (beloved rodent-kid) is being copied. Yuuno you pimp.
   
   
6. If you beat them with Yuuno, the dialogue shows that the twins are tied up by the ferret's binds. Lotte begins to prepare for her 'Forbidden Killer Technique' before Yuuno frantically manages calm them down and prove he's not a fake. (Close shave, Yuuno. I have a pretty good idea what that forbidden technique could have been.)
   
   
7. After explaining their situations to each other, the twins request Nanoha/Yuuno not to tell Hayate and the others about them being there. Here's the first of the many indications of bad blood between the Lieze twins and the Yagami family, and it will only escalate in further chapters.
   
   
8. Next segment, Vivio and Einhart are warped into the past. Kris and Asteon are capable of helping their owners have limited aerial capabilities.
   
   
   
9. The two lolis are confused about the situation but Vivio recognizes Uminari. They detect incoming signals so they setup just in case.
   
   
   
10. It's a two-choicer here. It's either Nanoha vs Einhart or Yuuno vs Vivio.
    
    
11. Nanoha finds Einhart's blue & purple eyes beautiful (her fetish...?). Einhart realizes that they got caught up in a time warp and agrees with Vivio (telepathically) to not get involved with the present people for now to avoid changing the future. Nanoha chases her down and beats her as she tries to run away. Nanoha is impressed by the fighting style and asks for it politely. Einhart has a slip of the tongue and fully identifies herself and Kaiser Arts, realizes this, panics and promptly escapes.
    
    
12. If you fight Vivio with Yuuno, the latter is of course surprised that Head-Librarian Yuuno is here and that small. She quickly realizes the situation as a time warp after talking with Yuuno some more. She's actually pretty genre savvy since she knows that in fiction, you're not supposed to let people in the past know about the future.
    
    
13. After getting defeated, Vivio marvels at the skill of the Ace of Aces' teacher. Yuuno catches on to this term, Vivio panics and handily manages to make him look away by saying, "Ah! Nanoha-mama and Fate-mama are coming here!" escapes with "Jetstep, GO!!!" and ends with "GOMENASAAAII~!"
    
    
14. The last fight is against Stern, now sporting a new fighting stance, cooler moves, full fire elemental and WISDOM. She's the witty, silent-yet-wordy type that does amazing stuff with a poker face. Her antics are quite amusing along the way.
    
    
15. If you pick Yuuno, the poor guy gets into trouble again because Stern recognizes him as 'Nanoha's master.' Once you win, Nanoha arrives and the two lookalikes exchange pleasantries. She flies off after calling Yuuno 'Shishou,' meaning Master. Hilarity ensues as Yuuno desperately denies to Nanoha about being the Material's master.
    
    
16. If you pick Nanoha, prepare to see a spectacle of friendship. Seriously, without any doubt, Nanoha and Stern are completely best friends with each other. Stern remembers Nanoha's name (written in katakana though... Am I missing something?) and Nanoha thinks Stern's and the other Material's names are cool. Stern goes on to explain that she has surpassed being just a copy and adopted her own style as the 'Destructor' for the sake of the King (Dearche). She also says that she always wanted to fight with Nanoha again. They fight, and Nanoha wins by a small margin. They then go back to talking like best friends, with Stern promising not to involve innocents in the affair since the Materials are only after getting U-D.

Next up is Sequence 3, about Fate and Arf.

Spoiler for Sequence 3:

1. For the first fight, you have a choice of Fate vs Kyrie or Arf vs Amita.
   
   
2. In Arf vs Amita, the redhead is completely CHARMED by 'Wan-chan's' ears and tail. ("I'm a wolf!") She goes off into her own fantasy world, not listening to Arf as she mentally fawns over the canine's qualities. She ends up blurting out her thoughts as she sees Arf's tail swaying in the breeze. XD Amita admits that it's a bad habit of hers. They fight, Amita loses. She tries encouraging her device. Arf says that since her weird toy is already useless, Amita should give up. Our redhead doesn't appreciate the comment and goes to a long tirade of Variant Zapper being created by their father and it being important. Arf apologizes and admits she can be rough with her words sometimes. Amita realizes that she flared up since it was about her family and apologizes as well. Arf binds her but Amita escapes hardly a second later. Arf is left to ponder if she's a magician.
   
   
3. As for Fate vs Kyrie... Fate has met her worst enemy. Poor, poor naive and bashful Fate. Kyrie fawns over her, calling her 'Kawaiiko-chan' (Cute girl-chan) and keeps shooting down Fate's attempts for her to cooperate as invitations for a date. Fate was reduced to saying, "Auau..." by the end of it. Kyrie breaks up the act and makes clear her intention of going her way, even by force.
   
   
4. When you win, Kyrie is surprised that she lost in speed. Fate is exhausted but manages to corner the Pinkette. Kyrie quickly mentions her dad and that this mission is for him, playing up the sob story sneakily and manages to sneak in a cheap shot at Fate. Blondie is unable to believe it was a lie but Kyrie says whether it's true or not has nothing to do with her, promising to buy Fate some sweets later and asking not to be hated before escaping.
   
   
5. Next up is Fate/Arf vs Dark Piece Rynith and then vs Dark Piece Precia for the next match. They are both brought about by the Darkness from Fate and Arf's memories. The Testarossa Matriarch and Familar aren't exactly in any condition to communicate properly because of massive disorientation. Fate/Arf decides to lay them to rest.
   
   
6. Now HERE comes the big difference. After beating Precia, the following little scenario will change depending on the character.
   
   
7. If you use Fate, Arf rushes to her side and hold her. Fate keeps a calm facade and insists she's alright. But Arf can feel her shaking. Arf then proceeds to think that despite the incident being over, Precia is still a big existence in Fate's heart. She laments never being able to stop Fate, who keeps on insisting she's fine and pushing herself.
   
   
   
8. If you use Arf, once she rushes to her master's side it's an entirely new story. Fate has also defeated copies of Ryntih and Precia, but she's completely in tears by the time Arf gets to her. The poor girl says that despite knowing they were fakes, the feeling of cutting them down and their pain were still fresh in her hands. Her horror could be felt in her voice (Good job, Mizuki Nana.) Enraged would not even begin to describe Arf's feelings right there. Heck, I was feeling sick and indignant for this situation forcing a nine year old like Fate into this.
   
   
   
9. The final match is against Levi. THANK GOODNESS for this lovable little battle maniac! She's one of the main sources of humor and fun when the story goes dark and edgy.
   
   
10. If you pick Fate, she mentions that they actually have met once, despite it not being shown in the previous game. Levi's apparently more energetic than ever. Our favorite psycho-loli says that in the first game, the Materials were all pretty much semi-sleepwalking and confused about their goals, so they ended up destroying and making trouble.
    
    
11. Levi then goes on to say, "Nevermind that! Look Original! My magic color is the awesome aqua-blue! Look at it's shine!" Fate agrees that it's pretty and says it's the same color of ALICIA'S magic. (Big WHAT here.) Levi asks about Alicia and Fate explains that she's already 'beyond the sky.'
    
    
12. Levi misundestands it as being overseas in the galaxy. In any case, she asks if she resembled Alicia. Fate says that they're not alike at all. Levi is disappointed:
    Fate: Hmm... Maybe at least the energetic part... On second thought, nope. Not at all.
    Levi: WHICH IS IT?!
    
    
13. Fate laughs (LAUGHS. I never heard her laugh as a loli. Now that's a first), saying that talking with Levi made her feel funny instead of depressed. Levi says that it's natural since it's better to go ahead and fight while doing what you want because it's more fun, interesting, awesome and cool. (Yes, she says all of those. XD)
    
    
14. Fate says it's fine as long as it's not causing trouble like the Materials did in the first game. ("Original is with the TSAB after all.") Levi takes that as a challenge for a duel and the fight starts.
    
    
15. After the fight, Levi apparently couldn't hit Fate and the latter explains that despite all the flashy moves, Levi still hasn't learned using them effectively yet. Fate asks if they have their own names. Levi identifies herself. And then the cool, kind and meramera (blazing?) one is Stern and the arrogant one who feels important but is actually genuinely important King is Dearche. Levi thinks the names are cool and Fate agrees.
    
    
16. Fate introduces herself:
    Fate: My name is Fate.
    Levi: Hate? :3
    Fate: Fate.
    Levi: It's troublesome so I'll just call you Original!
    Fate: (I think that name is more troublesome... But I guess it's fine? )
    Arf: Faaate~!
    Fate: Arf!
    Arf: Uwa... Is that a Material? Why are you talking normally with her?
    Levi: How rude! I'll kill you, stupid mutt!
    Arf: What did you saaay?!
    Fate: Wait, wait! Don't fight you two!
    Levi: Buuu...
    Arf: Grrr....
    
    
17. As if that wasn't enough, Levi turns the serious sequence into comedy gold if you use Arf to fight her. Seeing as our trusty Wan-chan is pissed before the match. She understandably blames Levi and the other Materials. Levi tries to explain that the dark Pieces aren't appearing from the Material's orders this time, but Arf would not hear any of it and says in a very threatening tone that she'll catch all the Materials and make it so that they can never revive again. Levi says out loud that she's scared by this time.
    
    
18. When you win, Levi is scared out of her wits:
    Levi: W-why are my attacks not working?
    Arf: What's wrong, that all ya got?!
    Levi: S-stay away! Stay away!
    Arf: Behave already. We're gonna try Dr. Shamal's sealing magic.
    Levi: Auu... *sniff* *sniff*
    Arf: Eh...?
    Levi: Uu...UWAAAAAAAHHH!!!! What is it?! Why are you bullying me?! Did I do anything bad to you? I haven't even done anything yet!
    Arf: Err... well...
    Levi: The fragments are not coming out because of us, they're doing so by themselves! How is that our fault? If you don't like blue then just say it! (Wat?)
    Arf: You don't have to put it that way...
    Levi: Who cares about you! WAAAAAH! I hate you! T__T
    
    
19. Fate then arrives. Arf is at a loss and her master proceeds to console the crying Material. (I was almost crying myself here. Crying with laughter, that is. XD) Levi mentions all the scary things that Arf said and also added 'being given a taste of hell,' which Arf denies. Fate goes full Big Sister mode on the wayward psycho loli.
    
    
20. Regardless of the chosen scenario, the next part is that infamous lolipop scene shown in the scans a while ago. (Thanks to Laith for the actual sample pic.)
    
    Fate offers the lolipop that Arf got from the shopping district. Levi loves it. Arf comments telepathically that they have a complete little brat on hand, while Fate thinks it's cute.
    
    
21. Fate's manages to coax Levi into spilling the beans about the Material's plan. Levi happily explains that System U-D and the Materials were part of the Core System of the Book of Darkness/Night Sky. System U-D in particular was made from the time in Ancient Belka as an Infinite Magic Linking Mechanism. She speaks in much technobabble that has Fate surprised that Levi knows such complicated words. Levi is annoyed and says that despite her personality, she's still a Material. Fate apologizes. Levi finally finishes the lolipop, saying that there's definitely no blue things that can be bad. Fate asks if Arf has any more but unfortunately not. Levi says that she's busy but will come to play again if they have more of that sweet, swirly blue thing again. She dashes off with Sprite Form (her version of Sonic Form), which impresses Fate.
    
    
    
22. The sequence ends with Arf thinking that having things to protect and save makes Fate strong. She prays that those things can be protected and saved in this incident as well and that she will do her best.

Whew. One thing I like about these games is that they really make me care about Fate. She has gotten rather dull as an adult, despite still being a delicious teasing target. But then again, I guess it's just the execution in StrikerS. She's still loads of fun when she gets her parts in Vivid.

Of course! Next sequence is about my favorites Hayate and Reinforce! I'll be posting the next part tomorrow since I'll have to go to work. But please stay tuned. >:3

Oh, don't worry. Amitie will prove that she's a great character by her own merit. It's only a couple of Sequences away from her Crowning Moment of Awesome after all.

Yup! We really have a sore lack of trickster characters here. Combined with the fact that Kyrie is a complete flirt with hidden depths, she's a sight for sore eyes. >:3

It's in side-P but you have to finish the game, according to Aaron fighting with Arf on Sequence 3, and then play it again. Instead of fighting Fate you fight Arf on 04B.

I instantly started to like Levi xD! God she's funny. the florian sisters are compluicated for me, so far i find Amitie endearing but i'm waiting for her to become awesome, as for Kyrie i'll be again the Bad Buddy Bird and say i find her very easy to dislike xDU. But again those are more likely just my first impressions, i'll wasit to see what happens with them.

The term Lost Logia seemd like a very convenient one from the beginning of the franchise because it basically means "whatever the plot needs that don't require too much explanation" xD.

Unless the time-travel technology was called a Lost Logia, that doesn't apply.

Even IF the technology is Lost Logia, it doesn't apply, because someone in the future can eventually re-discover it!

I thought that was explained by her statement to Nanoha that she (Stern) has modified her fighting style to be more personal and unique. Nanoha doesn't use fire, but Stern does.

It also would have made good sense if Material-S was made from data from Signum, but it was Vita and Zafira. Still, whatever program made her might have portioned off Signum's fire because Material-L already had Lightning Conversion Affinity.

Dr. Florian discover it and identified as Lost Logia. Also, as most lost logias, he doesen't know how it works properly and didin't amange to disclose all the secrets of it. Even Kyrie who used it don't know the full funcionality and side-effects. So yeah, it pretty much qualifies as a Lost Logia.
