Sad to tell you this, but you cant! Gifs are an old (read: fuckin' ancinet shit ) format still used today.
It's like trying to play one modern game today with technology from the 80's.

The best you can hope to do is minimize the colors used so the end result looks better.
The main problem with gifs is the limit in colors. It only can take 256 sadly.

But would it change something if save it as SWF (flash) and then use macromedia fireworks for pass it to gif?.

Its weird, i dont know why when save as optimized imageready adds dots to the area of X color.

For example:

Theres a green area, i save as optimized and adds dark dots to the green area (the green color didnt changed....just added dots).

Hm? Ditther? maybe you mean lossy actually...

Also concerning flash, nobody would be using gifs if we could embed flash easily. Don't worry passing it as a gif and somehow the browser doing it's magic to make it work just doesn't happen. Mostly because flash needs an embed or object tag if I remeber (<-- hasn't coded HTML in a while) oh if it would only work with the simple <img /> tag.

You realise that means nothing for animation. Since I'm sure if it was just a matter of saving a static one could use jpeg or png.
It was Jinto's posts you should be searching for btw. I'm well aware of that hack.

The entire image? Select all layers and group them, then play with the opacity.

When playing with layers you'll also have the fill option.
It works the same as opacity only it ignores the layer effects.

You'll only be able to save the static image under the png format, if you wish to preserv the transparency.
Gifs only support only 0 and 100% and jpeg doesn't support transparency at all.

Question about animation and I didnt see a topic on it. Is there a way you can combine a animated image with a static? Might sound like a silly question but I know you have to save them as gifs and when I open them in IR, it shows the layers which I cant just c/p onto the static part of the sig. Is there something Im missing or do I need to incorporate what I want to animate in the orginal vers of the sig (I hope not cuz that would not make me happy ). Any help is appreciated for this sig making newb.

Check the Slice tool

With the slice tool you can divide the sig (or image) into an animated part and an static one

Hope it's usefull

You can drag an existing gif file in IR to another picture.. The easiest way is you group all the layers in it and the drag the new group over. The problem is, you then have to recreate the frames as it wont carried over to the new file.

The 2nd choice is, you enlarge the canvas on the gif. Then drag a static layer(or another group of layers) under the existing layers (again it helps if you group all the related animated layer first.

What Rick explained above are used when you are just creating everything from scratch..

I've had a few people ask me about how I do some of the glows in my signatures. I'm not sure this "technique" has been posted in this thread yet (I checked the tutorials Cats listed and nothing seems close), but I hope this is useful for at least some people.

A handy dandy glow tutorial, very basic and in signature form:

If there's any questions let me know. It was kind of late when I made this.

^ The only problem I see is the animated format. Even for me who experienced, it's hard, because I can't possibly keep up switching between the animation and PS. Watching it multiple times is an option but it takes unneccesarily long time.
I think a static tutorial would be better actally.

VirtualDub.. Google it (its free)

Also GIMP with GAP(Gimp Animation Package) extension. Altho GAP are a bit pain to learn, its pretty powerful animation workshop as well.

Yeah I pondered over the timing. If I make each point take too long then it's boring, but if I make it too fast then it's hard to read. Darn lack of a pause button! I'll find some time to just design a normal tutorial for it.

It was kinda fun to make though. ^^

Always fun making tutorials. One thing you can do (although it's far more complicated, advanced but fun) is a youtube vid with the exact same text and pics. Of course, this requires software to handle the files but that gives the viewer a chance to pause.

You do as you want, I just enjoy coming up with ideas, no matter how bad they sound.

In photoshop, you can only optimize the 8-bit tranparency channel version. The 24-bit one is unoptimizable. But a 24-bit png is usually more efficient then other formats, as long as your intrested in keeping quality. Typically I find it optimizes far better then a jpeg to give the same quality, especially with large images, but of course jpeg will always win with its optimize till it looks like shit settings.

To optimize a png...
  • File > Save for web...
  • Choose PNG-8
  • (tweek settings)
