It doesn't matter either way to be honest, barring any doujin work; both Itsuki and Itsuko are supposed to be mysterious, so it's supposed to be hard to figure out if they're serious or not.

Ya know, the novels do hint a lot that Itsuki does have some sort of interest in Haruhi... though they equally hint that he's gay for Kyon.

Itsuki's excuse for acting gay? If he didn't, Haruhi would rewrite him so that he IS gay.

Even though you say that, there seems to be a lack of non-professional interest in Haruki on Itsuko's part, at least in what was written thus far.

...It's the first novel. There wasn't any there, either.

It only starts showing up in Endless Eight and Volume 4.

So it would be that a more than professional interest grew until then. But I would find it hard to believe that Itsuko would undergo the same for Haruki with the way she's being depicted.

Sure, the flirting is a facade, but the portrayal makes it as though she is genuinely gay for Kyonko.

And you guys are having a dilemma over what it seems like I should not have done, should I just remove it?

Despite the fandom, I don't think we should have Itsuko be gay for Kyon-chan. I don't like it and it creates problems later.

Itsuko has had little in the way of portrayal up until now, really. This is due to the content of the original, in which Itsuki was a character the author thought up at the last minute, in order to fill in the role of esper that was originally meant for Kyon.

One of the major reasons Itsuki gets no character development-- there was no plan for him.

I don't see how you can call her a lesbian when very little of that behavior had been shown.

To be fair, Itsuki's interest in Haruhi came out of left field, too, although that was because of the alternate world in Vol. 4... and he did say how much he admired her a lot.

Not that important. YET.

I have no idea if the author is going to use that as a major plot point later or not-- this is why I refuse to change too much of the character interaction or plot, for fear of screwing ourselves later.

(This is the same problem the people who made the Harry Potter movies are now having.)

So... how about she pretending to be? Or at least ambiguously so? Then reinforce the fact it's fake by Kyon's inner monologue? That'd roughly match the canon version.
