I wonder if Ken really was the one behind this. It could be his stupid superiors (A.K.A The suits) who thought since most Negima's stuffs sell to a certain degree, maybe they can put the Negima's logo on SHIT and still has it sells well. Well, reality bound to hit them soon as i cannot see the rating of this show > 0.000001 % and the dvd sales > 100.

Do not underestimate the power of stooges. For they are the one thing the modern society is in no shortage of.

Mostly because its so... so... bad that it has MST3K value.....
the original dialog is probably lame-funny but a looser translation might prove hilarious.

At this point, I've lost all hope that Negima will ever get a proper adaptation -- perhaps we can hope for an 'adult video' parody like Lucky*Star and Haruhi recently got .......

I honestly cannot believe how bad it was. I didn't think it could be that bad. I guess that's what I get for holding any good expectations. I know I'll be curious to see where it goes though. I started off just laughing at the start with Asuna running: "Takahata-sensei! Takahata-sensei! ..." Then, I don't know...it just wasn't very appealing to me. Not to mention the lighting made it seem so dark, or was that just my video quality? I don't know.

Whatever. I'm gonna go cleanse my mind and watch CLANNAD.

No, every still I've seen has terrible lighting and set color choices... the sets actually look dirty and smoky.

The classroom is hyper-condensed and distorted /// probably to simplify camera work but it makes a lot of activity unrealistic looking (juggling, cheerleading, guncleaning, whatever...)

Oh I forgot to say that I found it humorous that Negi was skipping at the end as he exited with Asuna.

According to some anime blog, anyone who has finished the pilot episode can be considered a "saint". Honestly, I wasn't able to stand it less than 10 minutes in.

It's just so... horrible. No, I don't think "horrible" is enough. It's just so bad that I can't think of a right word to describe this... crap.

Either Akamatsu still wants to see more cosplayers in school uniform aside from his cosplayer wife or he doesn't understand why his work is considered a franchise already. Haven't he realized how much damage has been done because of the crappy first season, the senseless second season and now this?

No, apparently not. And just enough fans seem to be okay with parts of things that he keeps plowing deeper.

I'm one of those fans... I've only seen the raw right now and it was from youtube at that. For a live action TV it did its job quite well (storywise) in adapting the manga storyline.

Naturally those who hate cosplay or those who worship good cosplay will HATE it. The transition from paper to reality is just not that easy. Add to the fact that most people are probably seeing their first LA adaptation and the 2D crowd would definitely be screaming fail.

You don't have to be a saint to watch it, you just have to have tolerance for the idea of real actors and production limits. It has flaws but these should not have been enough to label it as a pointless and ridiculous endeavor for negima (the previous 2 anime didn't reallys set the bar high anyway)

Some mistakes have been made (IMO Ku Fei's hair and the wooden acting by some) but these can still change as the show progress. Some ideas i think were worthy of praise was how they showed 3-A's class roster in the ED and have chamo as a 2-D incarnation (saving us less cheese).

PS
As i said there are cringe moments in the episode when things do look cheesy and I expect a whole lot more such moments but I actually think its fun to see them try this live approach.

It isn't so much the idea of live-action (I've seen quite a lot of live-action adaptations so I think I have a lot of tolerance for the concept -- I've even seen it done well) but it means a lot of energy will be expended for yet another "not on target" production. Ken just seems to have a talent for adaptations of all his manga missing the mark.

There are a large number of casting decisions that don't seem to make sense (example: Kaede) and we'll just have to see how that goes. Some of the casting appears to be fairly decent on the other hand. I'm really unclear on why they couldn't have found a male to play the role of Negi.

The budget for the set design and what sfx we did see ..... ah well -- if I'm magnanimous, Dr. Who comes to mind but then much of that series was done in the 1970s. If the budget is to be minimalist, the acting and story will have to be compelling or the ratings will crash. I've already pointed out some of the set design and direction choices I don't score well.

Live-action is often used to increase the main-stream appeal of a product (to bring in a lot of "doesn't watch anime" japanese fans)... so from a business aspect, this does have the potential of reviving/increasing the manga sales. If it does, then perhaps down the road, we will get a decent animated production... or even a decently budgeted live-action version that adapts the story and characterization that makes Negima appeal to many... but I'll rate the chance as very unlikely given the history of such things.

I still find it problematic that there's been so little merchandising (figures, CDs, etc) since the first animated series --- that's where a lot of income is usually produced.

I call it the Negima Curse. Name me one thing in the Negima franchise out side of the manga that did not end in epic fails.

Well the 1st series actually did better than most of you think it actually did well in the ratings and sales of DVDs of both in Japan and America have been steady, nothing spectacular like Full Metal Alcamest, but decent. Admittedly there were many flaws in it such as the hair color and animation quality, but at least the animation quality was mostly fixed after it was redone for the DVDs which seemed to please fans. It's drama CDs, pratio cards and figuremates did exceptionally well in sales and was more than likely it's only really saving grace. It's didn't exactly fail, it just didn't do as well as the manga.

Now Negima!? and the Live action Negima are BOTH epic failures.

Negima!? did well at 1st. Many people thought that a redone story of Negima would be good, especially since the animation company Shaft was in charge of it. But it quickly became apparent that it wasn't. People complained about the sever redesigns of many of the characters (most notably Asuna and Nodoka), the dramtic different "feel" of the show from the manga and 1st anime, the lack of any coherent story, and no plot development for more than 12 episodes. It just had a sorry look to it. It ultimately failed miserably in the ratings near the end. Sales for the DVDs have been mediocre at best, almost non-existent at worst. It's one of the main reasons why the fansubbing group that was fansubbing it stopped production at episode 14-15. Patio cards for the show have been selling ok but not anywhere near as good and the 1st anime's did. and due to low ratings no drama CDs or figures were ever made. (Why Funimation decided to get this I'll never know....)

The Live Action is about the only thing they could have done to top Negima!? for bad quality entertainment. The definition of "epic fail" has had to be changed because of how just ridiculous this idea was. The acting it pitiful at best and down right deplorable at worst. The special effects (especially Chamo) has been ridiculed by both fan and critics. The ratings for the 1st episode were actually surprising good. But that was more than likely do to people just curious about the show and what it was like. As of episode 2 it had become plainly clear that the show is an utter failure. Ratings dropped by nearly 92%! so i predict the show will by pulled sometime soon.

So i like to consider the "Negima Curse" as for every incarnation of of Negima there is, it just keeps getting progressively worse. Akamatsu should just stop trying and just concentrate on his manga.

If the japanese audiences run screaming the other way and give it a pass --- it doesn't matter what a small tribe of posters think <sigh>. 92% drop..... when these sorts of doramas don't get much audience share to begin with. Ouch.

((I just watched the recent ep 20 sub of the Negima!? ... I'd forgotten just how disappointed I was in the series at this point watching the raws.... the thing just seemed to communicate a total lack of care for the characters))

The live-action *could* be done interestingly and well..... but again, I'm not sensing much love (outside of a bunch of new starlets trying their best to get noticed by other directors).

The manga is a rambling thing ala Love Hina at this point... but it *is* continuing to be entertaining with a lot of endearing characters. Thank goodness for that.

TV TOkyo rating system. It's on the company site, not the tv site. Can't link it there because their company blocks direct linking.

You might post the entry link for those interested in the insta-ratings.

I doubt they'll actually pull it --- the japanese system tends to be stubborn that way. It'll just vanish after 1 cour.
