So we're skipping forward to magazine raws until volume 5 comes out...that's cool, I guess. I did notice what seemed to be a drop in art quality, but more Fran is always good.
With regards to chapter 38...lol, sorry, I thought it was pretty funny. Well, iunno. I guess the ending did manage to be moderately sad. However, the tone of the chapter in general was pretty light throughout, and the 'bad end' didn't really ruin it for me. In terms of humour, I loved particularly the segment when he became a tentacle monster and the return of that hawt policewoman lady. At first, with the muscle thing, I was thinking we'd get another (? kinda feels like it's been done before) story where the guy keeps getting physical enhancements but ends up being bullied anyway, because emotionally he's still a coward. Instead we got that weird 'mental image' transformative cell thing, and we veered off into a version of the 'perfect man' idea, which was also interesting. Then the conclusion, with the sea squirt flesh monster...lol, at first I was just thinking "that's looking pretty freudian/vaginal" but then the whole 'shutting themself in a room' thing and 'living without any other thoughts or worries' practically became a pretty frightening commentary on my life. Ah, manga. Thematically, I guess this chapter kinda wandered a bit, but it still managed to be pretty great by the end. I thought the whole 'musk deer' and perfume thing was rather hilariously random. |

Sol Falling: It's a commentary on wish-fulfillment and otaku in general, in my books... but done in a way that won't offend anyone except fans of poor Police Lady Kuhou. She's still damned cute. And hot.
But then again, I think Adorea's hot too... |

I find this mangaka's way of drawing girls to be manages to be strangely attractive in general--I say 'strangely' because the style is very rough and the facial proportions sometimes just don't seem right, but yeah, count me in as another fan of Officer Kuhou and Adorea.
Anyway: so, has anybody else been checking out the recent chapters of Kigitsu Katsuhisa's other work, Helen ESP? The content is somewhat different, featuring a psychic blind-deaf-mute girl, so it has somewhat less visceral appeal...but it's still rather interesting. Also, somewhat related to what I said above--Helen is super cute (not at all in the fanservicey way of Kuhou and Adorea though). Not much has been released yet...only 5 chapters, two of which have been recently scanlated by Futari wa Pretty Anon...but yeah, I enjoyed them, so I thought you guys might like to check it out. |

Helen looks a bit like a freak when she smiles happily (her eyes disappear into those lashes which are like gaping holes in her face)- although she also reminds me strongly of a lighter-brown, longer-haired version of Victoria, so that's always a plus.

You call my Helen a freak!? You prejudgemental people! What has Helen done to upset you?! Well enough hijacking, I personally enjoy the author's artwork. It is drawn in a way that fits the plot I think... not totally high quality but just got a certain element to it that makes it awesome. Need a thread on Helen ESP....

Make it then. I'll be happy to hop over for the awww.
Mind you, after Franken Fran I'm kind of traumatized with the author, and while Helen herself has shown nothing but the best of intentions, I always get this little scared feeling that something will turn really bad somewhere. |
