There are English speakers who fail English in schools in America. The subject isn't just a matter of knowing how to speak it, after all. People who speak English all their lives can fail English class.

Not for me, I kinda spoiled myself. And thing is, I didn't even watch raws, just one page with a dark atmosphere, some depressing dialogue, and kinda put it together. Also, this show is rich on drama, so we really should've seen it coming regardless.

I wouldn't go that far, but I did love how Haru's dad totally... well, now, I can't really say he misunderstood, can I? His reactions. That's it. I loved his reactions, those were hilarious.

On a somewhat related note, I just noticed Yaya's proposal for the club's logo had Naru in it. As expected of the first girl

What impressed me the most is that they actually managed to get a practice run without making it contrived. Please remember Yaya is quite popular, so if she gets into Yosakoi, the class follows suit. At least that's the reasoning I'm sticking to.

It actually reminded me of Yuno, particularly the episode where she makes this awesome banner for a school contest, and actually wins. God, did that warm my heart. This, of course, was really cute too, and it's nice to see Naru's inspiration are her friends.

That's a funny way to say it's time for Yaya's big development, really, even the title implies so.

That confidence comes mostly from having Naru close by, so it's not like she's self-reliant. This is definetly a big hit to her, though. Remember, she was talking about the end when telling Naru she should just do what she wants, which is Yosakoi. So yeah, it's gonna hurt.

When you have a fantasy loving girl and a yamato nadeshiko around, things get homely and cute, fast, I presume.

True, but the level of material covered by an English Class in a Japanese School would likely be several grades simpler than a class in the equivalent grade in an American School. Even if Hana was awful at English in America, she should be doing much better in Japan on account on how much easier the material is than what she was doing state-side. If that's the case, does it mean she was FAILING English back in America? Or perhaps she took the English exam too lightly, and as a result did worse than expected?

It is expected of course, that Japanese and Social Studies will drag her grades down - she doesn't have the foundation beforehand, and hence need to catch up. As expected, Math and Science saves her, but it's very surprising English does not. It would have been even more compelling, had Hana gotten an average of 78 or so because of her strong English, Math and Science, but failed to make it because her Japanese exam sucked.

Speaking of which, I'm not surprised that Yaya's band failed to make it through. The narrative kinds of demand it, while the amount of competition they faced probably ensured mere competency was not enough to see you through.

re Naru's mom's age: She's 39. The 17 year old thing refers to the old joke from Kikuko Inoue and Yukari Tamura, and their answer to questions about their ages. It's also kind of filtered through to some anime and fandoms (Touhou for the latter).

I think its because of kanji. I read/heard that even if its English. You need to translate japanese words/sentence to English and if she's already suffering in Japanese which is 48, then there is a high chance her English subject would fail too.

its hard to translate something you can't read.

I'm much more impressed on her math which is 100 and then there is also Science which is 98.

It's possible to get bad score from English subject when you get an exam like this:

This could explain why she got such a mediocre score, I know, but it was still a bit unexpected. It's also funny that no one commented on it, not even Hana, even though it was almost as low as her Social Studies score.

Hmm, I wonder why her face is hidden from view... unless her face is just plain!

Still, that rejection from the audition hits Yaya hard! Maybe it's time for her to move to the Yosakoi Club after her problem is resolved.

The part with Naru's dad were my favorites. I know I'd be behave much the same way if I had a daughter

Sally-chan-sensei was successfully added to Hana's harem! Yes, Hana is the real harem master. Naru is only there to help her pick up girls.

Not surprising. I have a friend who was born and raised in the US, then came back home after finishing grade school. During her first year in secondary highschool she failed pretty much every subject, even English, mainly because she couldn't read the questions at all.

Tell that to Yaya and her yosakoi logo.

The roles always keep getting changed in this show.

Pretty good episode. Maybe it's just me though, but as for the drama over Yaya's band which presumably will be coming up, I really hope it doesn't break up/they don't give up on it. I guess anybody could reasonably argue that this is ultimately a show about Yosakoi, and Hana/Naru as the more central characters, so it might 'make sense' for Yaya to be freed from her distractions and more fully dedicate herself to the club. However, I can't help but feel that something like that would be a disgrace to Yaya's own dreams and free will. Even if it's not directly related to yosakoi, I like the element that Yaya being in a parallel pursuit of passion as part of a band brings to the story.

I agree, but I don't think people who brought it up would want to see her quitting the band or anything like that. It's just that they are expecting it to happen, and personally I consider this to be worst case scenario, but there may be some point in the next episode where something like this indeed come across Yaya's mind but ultimately I don't think she will give up.

For me, Yaya having to balance her life between her bandmates and yosakoi club becoming a catalyst for developing her character isn't much of a surprise, but her ending up quitting or breaking up of the band is really uncalled for, and I hope the author wouldn't take such a path.

I don't think Yaya would choose to quit the band, I'm just not so sure about the other members. A band is made up of multiple people: a drummer can't carry it alone. If the others are too disheartened by this to keep going they may decide to give up no matter what Yaya wants.
