A very important matter has come to my attention. That would be the true pronouncation for the title of animesuki. now everyone who's here knows what anime is. But what is suki? My guess suki is the adj. for to like and therefore, the current name for animesuki should be pronounced animeski when spoken

Sure about that? I always thought suki was well...suki, not ski. Like that Steel Angel Kurumi song...goes something like suki suki suki suki something something...

suki means "love" in japanese. but this is an english site, so one cannot really care about japanese grammer....

Who cares how it's pronounced? As long as you know what it is, or what you mean with it. Same with the word "Anime", I recall a thread asking how you pronounced "Anime", and lots of people said it differently then it's "supposed" to.

I'm not taking an educated guess here, but whatever.

I think Suki pronounces as Ski as many other japanese words.
ie.
I pronounce Sagashite as Sagash-te instead of Sagash-i-te.
Or Aishiteru I pronounce and hear as Aishteru.

All in all there is no emphasis on the I or U in the previously mentioned words. Although that is in casual talk, in songs or sometimes politeness the Us and Is are used, such as Saga-shi-te or something.

As I said, I got no facts at all on this, just a feeling I got after watching too much animé :P
I guess someone who actually knows japanese can explain this properly.

Sephon, true, just like everyone pronounces Sasuke as Saske. I guess I'm just used to pronouncing suki as suki...

It's like this : Suki... That's the way I see it.

One of my friend sometimes says A-nim (or just plainly speak it "anime" in french), cause it would be actually spelled animé in french the way you pronounced it, and is a the way the actual word is written in french as in dessins animés.

This us correct. The 'u' is there as if to tell the reader the way to pronounce the 's'. If you were to say the word "animesuki" slowly then it would be 'a-ni-mei-su-ki' as opposed to saying it fast and correct "a-ni-me-ski".

That that's just my opinion. The 's' sound is shorter. It isn't really like saying the verb "ski" because the 's' is too long and emphasized. Like if you said any other word with "su" it would be like "sue". However if you were to see "si" it is said like "she".

Its realy hard to explain how to pronounce Japanese words without being able to hear a verbal example lol.

The difference between 'suki' and 'ai' (and 'koi' for that matter) is one of degrees. They all represent the same general idea, just one is more than the other.

'Suki' isn't the only case of a devoiced vowel sound. Someone already pointed out the i in 'sagashite', but a much more common example would be the verb 'desu', pronounced 'de-ss' and not 'de-soo'. Actually voicing the 'u' sound at the end of the word seems to mark you as either an out-of-towner or a bit of an idiot (good example: Mihoshi from Tenchi Muyo! always says 'de-soo').

Both pronunciations are correct. The devoiced vowel thing comes from the Tokyo area accent, prominent nationally after the Meiji Restoration when Tokyo became the capital of Japan.

Hmm yet I met so many people on the Yamanote line who deliberately pronounced all their "U's" especially when I was trying to drop mine in Japanese conversation.

Perhaps they were commuters from outside Tokyo and "took offence" to Tokyo-ben nihongo.
