Turkey's prime minister says military attempted coup against government
ISTANBUL — Turkey's military attempted to overthrow the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday, the country's prime minister said on live television.
His surprise announcement comes as military tanks and personnel were deployed across the capital, Ankara, and the country's largest city, Istanbul. Helicopters and fighter jets were reported by residents to be flying low over both cities Friday night. Soldiers blocked the two major bridges across the Bosphorus strait in Istanbul. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told local television station NTV that his government would "not allow" the military, which has staged coups in the past, to take over. "We will not stray from democracy," he said. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world...gnews#comments

I have just read that the military took control of Government and are controlling both Istanbul and Ankara, there are reports of gunfire in Istanbul as well.
I knew this would happen, I guess that military has finally got feed up with Erdogan. I read some 5 months ago about possibility of coup since military does not like his "I want to be modern Sultan" attitude one bit. And ever since they worsen relationships with Russia, USA and EU it has been only worse and worse for Erdogan. It will be interesting to see what happens next in any way. |

Here you can follow latest news.
So far - it seems that Erdogan was able to evacuate and he will hold press speech soon. Also: "The head of the Istanbul branch of Turkey’s ruling AK party says soldiers entered the party building and asked them to leave, CNN Turk reports." |

And I support, Erdogan planned to became sultan anyway.
Irony that he talked about 'democracy' in interview when he was the one who tried to extinguish it in the first place. Just remember all those generals and senate members who were arrested and got their rights and protection terminated. |

If the military can pull this off without any bloodshed, then this might be for the best (despite being highly morally questionable even assuming they have good intentions). But they're playing a super dangerous and risky game here and if it protracts into chaos then it'll be on their heads. Let's hope this isn't another Egypt situation.

Even the air battle has begun, we will see how much successful it will be until morning.
"Turkish justice minister says members of a movement loyal to U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen in the army are behind the attempted coup. There has been no immediate comment from Gulen." Soooo..... US is behind coup? Last edited by Brother Coa; 2016-07-15 at 19:51. |
