I haven't played ToP and I stopped in ToS near the end(I should really finish it) but there are many numerous connections to each other...I can't name them since its been a while but I looked into it back then.
P.S. Spoiler:

Hopefully for people who are planning to buy this or are currently trying to find it, be sure it is the cheap one...Something like Playstation's "The Best" titles or Greatest Hits...I dunno what Nintendo's 1000 sold titles are.
I bought this a while ago and I never regretted it, simply one of my fav's back then and IMO I thought the english dubbing was pretty decent in it~ This game is overall great: -Action/RPG style -Great full story -Nice animation -Choose any of the female character in the game as main character's love interest -COSTUMES!! -Sheena - Favorite character of the game! LOL I noticed that Llyod's VA is Robin from Teen Titans~ |

I LOVE this game!
Tales of Symphonia is my absolute favorite rpg, I was hoping there was a thread for this! I love the characters in this game, they're all so excellently portrayed. I loved the hints of romance between Lloyd and Colette, and of course, I love Zelos (who doesn't?). One of the best things about this game is the battle system. Tos' battle system is the best I've ever seen! I'ts very intuitive and interesting, and so fun to play! I love beating up the grand cardinals, and the battles seem so... epic. For some reason I thought that the final boss was really easy though. Another thing I love about this game is the music. I especially like the grand cardinal fight music, but all the tunes are excellent. My favorite main character was Colette, she's so cute. I like how she's clumsy and a bit clueless, but has good intentions. My favorite non-main character was Yuan, becuase he's... just really cool. His weapon is awesome, and I love that blue hair. I like the voice they picked for him, too, and his ego thing. Heck, I love every aspect of Tales of Symphonia! It's the best game I've ever played! |

I played the game a second time the past couple of months. Now, I like the game a lot, but the story past the first big plot twist has issues.
Spoiler for after the Tower of Salvation:
The first part of the game was great, but then they have you do all this side shit and make you visit places instead of, you know, carrying the story forward!

Story fits the framework of some of the other Tales games - the twists in particular. Characters were certainly memorable, but what annoyed me the most about the games was the amount of cut scenes one needed to endure to move on. Oh, and the Rheirds or whatever didn't seem to handle that well. Last boss was a lot easier than, let's say, the original Dhaos from ToP - even in mania. Some of the additional gimmicks require a certain someone to still be alive and kicking after reaching a certain point in the game. Certainly has replay value, and I've blazed through it about a third time to get the better "points" goodies. Quote:

Tales of Symphonia: Is the Ending Satisfying?
Wow.....I finished the game a few years back and played it again today. Beat it. But wow....I just noticed that the ending doesn't seem satisfying enough.....the fact that we know Lloyd is going around helping people and you kinda get a hint that one day Daras Karlan is coming back. And what the flip does Lloyd name the freakin tree?! They just end right before he says it! You know? I really wish that that had a squel game. -_- seriously......anyone agree or comments on the ending?

The tree ?
IRC, in an interview with some dev of the game it was said that the world of symphonia and phantasia are in the same. Most people assume that Phantasia takes place somewhere in the future of Symphonia, or to make it simple, symphonia is the prequel to phantasia, depends from what point you view it, i guess. So the name Lloyd gave the tree is assumed to be yggdrasill. btw play-asia have a used copy of phantasia for the super famicon in stock, if you're interested, or you can get one of the ports, i.e. psp with full voice, playstation or gba version. |

Yes, the ending sucks. If there's something I've learned by playing games and reading some books, it's that people can't make good endings to their creative works anymore since the last 20 years or longer. If you can call some of these 'endings' endings. The game's story isn't anything special anymore after the Tower of Salvation anyway. The second CD picks it up a bit, but it's still lacklustre. Basically, the story constantly gets interrupted by little side quests, breaking the flow and detracting from the main story. It's so bad that often when the main story gets attention again, it's by accident/chance.
