According to the article, the 4-koma manga Free! was put on indefinite hiatus for "various reasons".
A Japanese blog (http://xxshanimunixx.blog92.fc2.com/blog-entry-79.html) also wonders if this move against the 4-koma was due to Kyoani's influence.

If he didn't file any required legal paperwork safeguarding his manga's name and KyoAni did then sucks to be him imo.

I know everyone wanted the project to be this, FMP3, another KEY adaption (me ) or a sequel to another one of their works. This is nice to see them doing a different genre for a change.

People are overreacting, and in an uncomfortable Double Standard manner as usual. Would any of these people even raise an eyebrow if it was cute girls again? I think not.

Personally, as much as I'd like to see continuations of franchises I like (*cough* Haruhi *cough*), I'm curious at this, as again it's KyoAni going against the expected vein. Should be an interesting experience.

Given that one of the self-titled genre classifications is "upper bodies" and swimming gives the show the least contrived excuse to show them, I think it's safe to assume plenty of time will be spent in the pool.

Anyway, KyoAni being who they are I'm sure there will be some nicely animated swimming. But emphasis on sport or character development? I wouldn't hold my breath. XD This seems like a nice, fun, "turn off your brain and enjoy" type eyecandy romp designed to sell tons of BDs and merchandise (and personally I'm fine with that).

I haven't seen Hyouka, but anyway, I'm not saying KyoAni is incapable of that sort of thing, just that... well, look at the promo materials. I'm sure they'll try for some story, and we'll have an emphasis on character interaction, but I wouldn't hope for anything intellectually stimulating. (Of course I wouldn't mind ending up being wrong, but...)

Overall I have no problem with this being a shallow eyecandy, as long as it's entertaining shallow eyecandy. I just wish they'd gotten someone else instead of Miyano.

I am not really sure what you can show in the promo material? Sure the series is going to have fan service and its selling that but that doesn't mean that's all it will be.

It's a sports series about swimming so there is plenty opportunity to have a fun series that also develops the characters and their relationships around that concept.

The director has mentioned that a major focus of the series will be character development.

Then again, considering how a lot of people seem to think that K-On! doesn't feature character development, I wouldn't hold my breath on them catching any potential instances of it in this series either.
