The first episode was pretty decent.
The action was really nice and I'm looking forward to see more of those get animated. The heroines look great, and Houki and Cecilia are very entertaining so far. And, Ichika's personality as a protagonist of a harem is a plus. I liked how he spoke so casually while wielding a bamboo with a bra attached, instead of getting a nosebleed like a typical male lead, and challenged Cecilia in a society where females dominate, which proved that he's no wimp. |

This reminds me of Vandread, really. A guy who is special in a women dominant environment. Ichika isn't spineless and isn't a pushover also. He's an average guy, not shy(Rito Yuuki in earlier chapters) or nosebleeder(Ikuto) or dumb(Keitaro) or perverted(Tomoki). What I like here is the Battle of the Sexes. Not typical in today's anime.
As for the Harem candidates, I like Houki's Tsundereness, especially the scenes in the rooftop and the room sharing. And Cecilia from Britannia looked like the daughter of CC(Hey it's Yukana!) and Lelouch. (All HAIL Britannia)

Some people asking questions and making issues about IS right now probably don't know that most of those questions are already answered in previous post... like way back at page 7.
Well, it's possible that they just skipped them without reading, because most of them were marked as spoiler. (some of them do contain spoiler elements becuase they were needed for explanation) |

For the moment, it is fun. I do wonder if it will get serious and go into darker points as the series goes on. Quote:

Quoted for truth. Thanks. I am surprised at the amount of posts this series has so far already. It is definitely pushing for its own sub-forum at this point.

A reasonably enjoyable episode, more or less in line of what i expected. Personally i am glad this had little in terms of action (intro sequence of "things to come" aside, which looked pretty good, as the promos had indicated) and we had more time to settle down and catch up with the characters introduced - which there weren't too many off, which is another good point in my books - i like it when a show takes its time introducing the cast, rather than dumping them all at once.
Ichika actually seems like a pretty decent guy as well - understandably off-balance considering the situation, but actually speaks up against Cecilia in the end and doesn't back down. Considering the traditional lack of spine of harem male leads, this is a welcome aspect of his personality - willing to play nice to a point, but actually has some lines drawn for where said niceness ends. I do hope they elaborate though what about IS makes them only operatable by females and why Ichika is an exception to the rule, rather than it remaining a piece of background information. Time will show i guess. My disappointment of the episode would be Houki though ... *sigh*, yet another tsundere, and of the unspoken type at that it seems. The joy. Couple that with a male lead who is less than a mind reader, and we have the recipe for all day long anger infused violent antics because one side has forgotten that communication is a two way street. I would kill for a female lead with the potential for more meaningful daily interactions than antic #17 from the tsunere handbook, but alas ... not this time it seems. Of course, i could be proven wrong and something substantial might actually come from the fact the two are forced to live together and interact, and i would fully welcome that, but feels like i would be deluding myself in actually expecting that, so i won't I just hope we have someone in the remaining female cast with less obnoxious personality than the currently introduced two. Regardless, a fairly enjoyable start to what has the potential of being an entertaining and light-hearted action show with good animation (especially during mecha action) and a decent male lead. I am on board to see how this turns out. Quote:
A potential less out-there explanation - the school has limited number of rooms available and accept an exact number of students each year to fill said number. Which leaves them with no single room for Ichika, but still having to put him somewhere, together with a female. Considering the potential uproar and objections this might cause, finding out he is actually acquainted with one of them (and thus making her likely less to object and having less room for all sorts of issues) could have been like a ray of light for the administration, and the choice made itself. Or simply - no in-story reason, was done just for the comedy situations this would produce. I would love for it to turn out along the lines of the conspiracy theory, but for the moment i will assume it's the later

Oh, about the personality of Orimura Ichika...
He is viewed as a strong-willed and righteous type. Remember that the social status for male is in the crapper - for a simple reason that female can use IS while male can't. All women are possible candidate for critical national asset - IS pilot - while men don't even get a chance to be a candidate. And that means all women gets special treatment that men cannot receive. (Also, married men have virtually no chance of winning a divorce suit... ) For that reason, most men tend to either lay low or become submissive toward women. But it's a little different from a typical female-dominated world, because women still need to marry men, and they definitely don't want to marry loser. It's possible that women are unable to catch up with the drastic change in social status. True, there are a few women who mistreat men, but those are only fraction of all women. Contrary to the change in social status, most women tend to look for strong - preferably both physically and mentally - and dependable men as their love interest and possible candidate for spouse. Also, the girls in IS Academy are another reason for his popularity. The fact that they entered highly competitive IS Academy means they are elite, and most probably were educated from very young to become IS pilots. That means school with special IS-related curicullar, which in turns mean girls-only school (It's waste of tax money to run IS-related curicullar in a school with boy students.) So, they didn't get to socialize with boys from very young, Thus, the girls in IS Academy are not very experienced in socializing with boys of similar age. Finally, the mind-set of Ichika, combined with all the reasons above, is what makes him so popular among girls. For an example, in EP01, Ichika asks for handicap(on his side) when challanged for duel by Cecilia. Considering the fact that Cecilia is well-trained national representative candidate and already has personal IS, everyone in the classroom was expecting Ichika to ask for handicap(on Cecilia's side) ※Ichika did not have his personal IS by then, and thus no training time. Also, his only experience with IS was his first 20mins activation time during entrance exam. (This part was not covered in Anime) But he did the opposite, and while other girls(uncluding Cecilia) considered him as ridiculous, it is highly possible that internally, they viewed him as confident and strong individual. ※Of course, he would needs to win the duel(or at least leave a strong impression) in order to gain the latter impression. Losing the duel in one-sided match would only result in him proving himself to be a ridiculous loser. Nevertheless of the change in social status, Ichika views girls as someone he should protect. (although the girls in IS Academy are probably stronger... both in hand-to-hand fight and IS battle) This old-fashioned mind set of chivalry, combined with the current social status for gender, makes him appear as confident, strong-willed and dependable male. (BTW, Chihuyu educated Ichika this way... mostly through brute force) |

now im expecting he can hold his own in this harem... please not the stereotypical "wuss that females gun for" because in HRSG, the guy was virtually just useful for powering them up

The fight at the start was orgasmic. Everything else was BLARGH! Why does England always end up making the snooty noble characters? It's more likely to give a chav on an ASBO.
Oh whatever. And anyone with brain wouldn't allow a guy have the same acommadation as a girl just by asking. If he's supposed to be internationally famous, surely that sort of thing couldn't possibly happen. I was hoping this male lead wouldn't be so incredibly thick like the rest of them. Oh well, my sense of realism just went down the drain with this one.

This show is very by-the-book, except that the protagonist has something of a spine. Kind of reminds me of Zero no Tsukaima. I liked the mecha fight at the beginning, but the whole "not used for combat" angle makes me a bit worried - are they just gonna pilot those mecha for sports and tournaments? That's so boring. Animation-wise the show looks very good, but I hope they didn't just blow half their budget on this episode (ok who am I kidding, they probably did). Watching it for the harem and the mecha but really not expecting anything above average.
