China Punishes Video Sharing Sites for Obscene Content

Article (link) in question:

Quote:
The Chinese Ministry of Culture announced on Tuesday that it will "punish" several internet companies for allegedly hosting animated series that contain violence and pornography. Some of the websites and companies implicated include Baidu Inc's iQiyi, Sohu.com Inc., Tencent, Leshi Internet Information & Technology Corp Beijing (LeTV), and Youku Tudou.

The offending material consists primarily of anime, including Blood-C, Highschool of the Dead, and Terror in Resonance. According to the Ministry of Culture, these series have been blacklisted because they "include scenes of violence, pornography, terrorism and crimes against public morality."

Though sites above are only suspected of hosting the content, the Ministry of Culture stated that it will punish the sites according to law. The Ministry of Culture did not specify what form the punishment would take.

Beginning on April 1, new regulations in China require video websites to seek approval to stream foreign media, and websites that fail to do so will be prohibited from streaming any media.

lol, the brutally obscene stuff we have on Netflix rated at 12 or at worst 15.

I'm not clued up on China but this actually surprises me as their stance is obviously really strict.

I'm not particularly concerned about the anime, but I like to stream Japanese TV programs on Youku and other Chinese sites, so I'll be slightly bummed if the new April 1 regulation gets them taken down.

There, the list of several anime titles under investigation (can't complete it all though since it extends up to hundreds for like, 150 in total, just picking the notable ones taken from a thread on /a/):

Spoiler for Series 1-29:

Spoiler for 75-84:

The rest is there (if anyone know Chinese fluently, go translate it)

It's more likely that the first season is also on the list somewhere else (or they just didn't investigate it yet). It seems like a pretty broad list of anything that contains violence or sexuality. SAO 2 may have gotten in for the guns.

Surprised to see Seven Deadly Sins and Tokyo Ravens on there. There both pretty mild compared to Elfen Lied and Deadman Wonderland.

Are they just banning anything that not suitable for minors or something?

I'm going to note that China doesn't have a proper age rating system when it comes to media-based products, I guess they are probably ban them for weird reasons or another.

And why is ToQger up there in the list?

Not having a proper age ranking system would actually explain a lot of China's silly censorship that clearly not politically motivated (I get why a Communist country would ban something like Psycho-Pass).

Since they have no way to separate stuff from 'Little Jim', his 'Big Bro Mike' and 'His Dad Fred' would make them tend toward banning anything they don't want 'Little Jim' to see ever.

Terror in Resonance is likely targeted 'cause of its terrorist content.

I don't get why it would be banned for it though, its not promoting terrorism. I'd argue the opposite tbh.

While that may explain it, it seems like a silly way to tackle the problem. I'd have thought a proper age rating system would be far simpler and less time consuming to implement than scouring the net, reviewing content and banning/blocking/instigating legal action. Like attacking a moth with an army.

China wants to ban good anime so they can force people to watch their own shitty animation ripoffs.

In b4 Sader.

Of course, perusing Chinese internet sites, quickly shows its users are quite aware of the nonsense its government is trying to convince them of despite the 1 billion and 1 web filters. Oh China, stop it with the 30s fascist style! If you want to brainwash people, you gotta sugercoat it with flashy stuff and dreams of wealth and power like we do over here so people are too distracted from their miserable lives. Oh wait, you already are.

I doubt it'll impact the DDL sites much however...

Well I guess the fact that insurgency from Xinjiang and the anime story is reminding the CCP of something that hits home.

Chinese government has given explanation why TIR/ZNT, Blood-C and High School of the Dead are not allowed to be shown in China.
