if you happen to own the manga (vol 2-4 this time around?) you can get it pretty much all in english. minus a few scene's and the addition of the wild geese bit before the title, it reads exactly the same, word for word. 0_o

The way the Hellsing OVA is treated is interesting, because it reminds me of both the 300 and Sincity movie.
Sometimes original materials like these graphic novels don't need to be altered when transferred to the screen; going word for word and scene-for-scene can actually work. It's not easy to do, but it can certainly transfer the spirit of the original very well when it succeeds.

Incredibly gruesome but oh so good. It's really cool to see why Alucard lusts for battling the strongest opponents and being arrogant and fearless.

Well, what drives Alucard is somewhat deeper than that. I don't think they're really going to get to the entireity of Alucard's lust for holy wars till OVA 8 or so.

still, isn't it nice for Alucard to have some actual character development for a change? ^_^

Wow id say that was the definition of "Ultra Violence", but pretty damn brilliantly done. The OVA's really do have alot more personality to them then the somewhat bland TV show and I think that really came through in the animation style this go round. Most shows I see lately are very high gloss and all about the CGI, but this episode had some nice grit to the visuals that I havent seen in awhile.

And as cool as alucard is I hope for more seras in the future...Just something about a cute vampire girl wielding small scale artillery that gets me aflutter.

Yeah, I enjoyed the TV series, but the OVA one kicks ass. The third one is awesome for some action and insight into Alucard. The whole hotel scene at the end is just, wow. Cant wait for more of them.

Also yeah, more Seras, she rocks and is hilarious. But from what I've heard we get some interesting character development with her, but probably not for an episode or two, if I'm to understand rightly.

I think Nachi Nozawa was better fitting for Alexander Anderson, Wakamoto may be great but not for this role.

don't count on it till OVA 6 at best. :\ Though maybe they'll animate one of the "interesting" scenes involving Seras next time.

I always felt that Wakamoto was a good fit for Anderson, simply because all you really need is someone who sounds badass. That's the only way Anderson acts through the entireity of Hellsing after all.

A roomate whose unacquainted with anime saw me watching episode 3, and I'm afraid what with all the extravagant violence and Nazi symbols, I'll be reported to the resident assistant about being suscept to homocidal behavior... especially in the aftermath of VT.

*Sigh* Ah well.

Fantastic, fanatstic music, can't wait for the OST to come out.

Spoiler for Alucard's OOC behavior?:

I found it extremely intruiging, how irritated/angry Alucard became after the last member of the first wave assault team expired himself; it's an expression that we have never seen on Alucard's face. I wonder why? My initial impression was he was caught off guard by the behavior, but after reviewing the scene, I think the shot brought Alucard back to his senses so that he was reminded of how he'd just massacred a roomful of humans.

The anger might have been directed at the ironic situation, and how he'd been forced to kill People; he's supposed to protect the ignorant human race after all, and he's been able to enjoy the thrill of battle for decades without (we presume) having to contradict himself in this manner. This frustration makes sense in his subsequent outburst at Ceras when she rubs the fact in unwittingly, but repeatedly, and his call to Integra to reconfirm her orders in light of the change in situation: that the enemy will compose of mere humans.

I don't know if Alucard possesses a sense of moral right and wrong, or if he has a conscience to be bothered enough that he would call his master in order to project the responsibility for "innocent" human deaths onto her... but what is clear is, after Integra gives the go-ahead, a load is lifted off his chest; he's recieved the license to kill.

That's how I interpreted his expression.

I don't think that he was having a moral crisis over what he had just done. I think the whole phone call was more so for Victoria's sake then his. I think he would have happily slaughtered them all and regarding them all as enemies, even if they were just dogs, in his view. Integra just validated his decisions.

I think Alucard divides people he fights in 3 categories, Men, Dogs, and Cowards. Men are those that come at him of their own free will, and face up to him, despite what ever second thoughts they may have shortly after 'killing' him 4 times in a row. Dogs are like those Police that came to him in the hotel, they are hostile to him, but they don't have the choice of being there. The Cowards are those like the Police officer that suicided. To him I think that is unforgivable and a pathetic way to go and completely lacks what ever honor he may view in those he fights. The other at least die fighting, well mostly.

He would've loved to slaughter them all; he was merely pissed off that he was being deprived of his last kill, that's how I see it.

You're wrong. Anderson acts completely differently when he is teaching those kids in the beginning - he is a kind and devoted priest, and Wakamoto is not the one that can portray such two-face realistically.

Alucard asked him if he was a man, a dog or a monster ; this is to be likened to a line that was cut in the OVA : when discussing with Walter, Alucard says that when you reject the "akirame" (=to give up, don't know how this can be translated), you can go beyond your human condition. Seras did not give up and chose to live as a vampire. Integra did not give up, neither when she was cornered by Alucard during her childhood (a butchered scene in the OVA, a thrilling one in the TV series) or when she was cornered by dozens of vampire SS (manga vol.6). So I think the whole "do not give up" theme is very important in Hellsing. Those who run away and give up are mere "dogs" ; on the contrary, those who stand up and face off are true "human beings", and only them can kill "monsters".

I find it somewhat interesting though that his anger over the officer killing himself was in response to his hatred of giving up (actually all his anger towards specific humans usually starts with them giving up somehow), and yet in the scene after he's sort of spilled over into something else entirely, and instead he's ranting over assigning meaning/value to battles.

Alucard really is a complicated sort of character. Which is nice I guess, since there's always a base cause for any given action, but you're still never really sure which part of his character will drive him in any given instance...
