Ah, what a wonderful car it was! It certainly got my attention, having been so accurately animated, even the sound of the motor!
Living in the country, and with a daughter and a dog, they should have had the Traveler version: . Quote:
On the other hand, I wonder if Alice's mom sounded more Japanese than English to the native Japanese viewer? I also wonder why she's so darn fluent in Japanese. |

Well, it was mentioned that Shinobu was staying with the family of her mother's friend. Presumably Alice's mother either studied Japanese, and/or went and stayed in Japan sometime, resulting in some fluency. Without it, after all, I can only think that Shinobu's visit (with her dismal English) would have been a disaster.

The key factor would not be parentage, but time spent hearing and speaking each language. Assuming a prior period spent in Japan by Alice's mother would be no more of a stretch. Maybe she was a home stay student in Japan when she was younger.

Cuteness over all. The halting flow of the show. The clumsy 3DCG (albeit of a neat old car in a beautiful countryside). I still enjoyed the episode a lot.
The English was off-putting, but better than usual. It seems to me that Japanese have more trouble speaking foreign languages than many peoples do. But the fact is that foreigners tend to pronounce Japanese very badly, too. Many consonants are not pronounced quite the same in Japanese as in European languages, and the intonation of a sentence is quite different. So it's not that simple for either side to sound natural in the other language. Either Alice's mother spent some time in Japan, or vice-versa. Either way would work, I think. The jump from returning home to getting the letter surprised me, but from the cherry blossoms and the new school year, it was clearly supposed to be April when she got the letter, whereas she did her homestay in England the previous summer. So Alice did have a few months to learn some Japanese. Although becoming as fluent as she did is unlikely, it's acceptable in the circumstances of having to spend a show speaking Japanese, lol.

I was wondering how many average British people still drive Morris Minors (equivalent to Americans driving '57 Chevies, I guess) until I saw the article about the B&B that Gokumi based Alice's house on. I was also impressed to read that even the quilt was real! Nice work, guys. Will be following. I always enjoy a good culture-clash show.
To be fair, there are still a lot of first-gen Mustangs and Camaros still on the road. |

That was the best outbreak of English in a series in a very long time. It was well written & well acted. Perfect? No. But I know some Japanese that speak English (was actually just talking to one a few hours ago), and all told, it was pretty good. Alice was obviously chosen in part for her ability to handle a lot of English.
It was very funny and MOE OD as well. It'll be a 4-koma Moe SoL, set in high school with 4-5 girls, but Ep 1 was really, really good. |

Ep.1
What a cute show! My heart melted during England scene. Nice English! I didn't research much about this show before watching it so, I thought the setting for entire show will be in England. As result, I was a bit disappoint when the setting move back to Japan. Anyway, the first ep. did a good job to catch my attention. off-topic - Watching this remind me that I planned to watch one show but forgot to do so. What is the name of the show where a Japanese girl goes to stay in France again? EDIT:Thank you V V

Episode 1 was extremely enjoyable. More so than I ever imagined. The language barrier that was present in the first half of the episode really added to the charm of the home-stay. It was quite touching to see Alice/Shinbou interacting with one another, and that had made it all the more enjoyable when scenes flashed by with them bonding for the duration of Shinbou's home-stay. Absolutely loved how their friendship started, quite adorable.
The rest of the episode was nice as well, I look forward to seeing what Alice has studied while she was apart from Shinbou. Wonder what misunderstandings she could have. @Marina2 It's Ikoku Meiro no Croisée

Cool looking show so far. Still, I always wish when they have someone play a native English speaker that they'd get someone who really DOES speak English as a first language. It just seems weird for someone who's watched a few British shows and seen British people to hear supposed Brits talk like that. I'd raise a flag if I heard a supposed Osaka person talking choppy Japanese, I'm sure there are Japanese people who raise a flag on this. Good thing it quickly switches to Japan. Still, strange that a girl who does a little studying is able to speak Japanese far more fluently than her native tongue.
