Well.... we could pull in the idea that its a village of "fox people" and invoke Disney but I don't think the analogy carries *that* far.
The archetype of a hero rising up and rallying the people of the land against oppressive rulers using irregular tactics is pretty universal ... even The Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven falls into that bucket. But since the show doesn't remind me of Moby Dick, Dante's Inferno, any Campbellian "hero quest" or "coming of age" story ... Robin Hood will do for now. Comparative Analysis 101. The "robin hood" aspects are part of the appeal for me besides the classical little "might be a romance" tale/tail. There really are no "original" stories.. just stories told well. And so far, it looks like Utawarerumono is a "story told well".

I think the Robin Hood parallel is interesting, but fails ultimately because part of the Robin Hood myth is that he was one of the people before he became Robin Hood (i.e. he "stepped up to the plate"). Hakuoro is more of a savior figure as he's an outsider who comes and saves them. Really it maps better to some of the greek myths. Besides, isn't it interesting when an anime conversation is able to spur these kinds of topics? That usually indicates to me that it's a pretty good series.

I like the spaghetti western connotation "the man with no name" (though Hak's a lot nicer apparently... at least for now) ... I'm trying to think of which Greek myths or literature fit the mold though.
Yeah.. to me these forums are kind of like book clubs. If all one is going to do is "fanboyworship" or pull that crap of "my girl must win no matter how lame the plot" then the forums lack value. If we're going to discuss the story construction, character design, animation quality, music scoring, or literary comparisons - then visitors can learn something while they enjoy the diversion we call anime and manga.

I was thinking of Perseus and Andromeda, but Jason and Medea in Colchis or (in a much more interesting twist on the tale) Theseus and Medea in Athens. All feature a hero who shows up from "far away" who then helps the people overthrow an unjust ruler.
But I like the spaghetti western comparison better, and some of the heroes weren't completely amoral. EDIT: Dude, Xellos is totally right. I'd never put together that they were the same person before. Weird. All this time I'd just assumed they were two different people named Medea. Apparently I need to read Euripedes' take on it.

the last episode was pretty good loving the series but we finally get to see Oboro and some of the other charcters from the fighting scenes in the opening. So happy the OP song is out i have been listening to it at work over and over. I do have question the fort that Oboro little sister is at who are they? and why is there a fort there? not much info is given about it since it focused more on the little girls illness. Also, did anyone noticed how Oboro carried his twin long swords really weird and in real life would be a bitch to unshealth both swords, and what was up with that one strike kill shit i know his ego took a blow but to give up after one strike is sad

...and as everyone knows, spaghetti westerns took inspiration from typical Japanese Classic Samurai movies. Full circle all over again.
