Id'e say factions in Saimoe are pretty coordinated. They can make some fairly weak characters seem pretty powerful, and it's not something that can be done without coordination.

Minori and Taiga showed their true strength. The K-ON/Toradora matches in the block finals will be fun to watch.

Vote: Eruruu, Miyako
Prediction: Eruruu, Nodoka

I'm calling the split for G3-1. It'll be close. Poor Miyamiya.

Also, if the Saki faction can pull something as elaborate as "hidden votes", I really can't help but think that they're more of a cohesive whole rather than a loose bunch of fanatics.
Even that is a reduction to about 60% of what they could have done. I'm not sure how wide spread the "hidden votes" thing is. It could just be a small but dedicated group. I think it was first caught helping a Saki character but it doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't done for other characters as well.

Which ones were you thinking of? Mio and Kagami are the two big ones that come to mind but they weren't really offed by weak characters.

After what happened to Mikuru in rd 2, I can think of Mikuru as nothing more than weak.(She went from having 736 votes vs. Kagami, to having 297 vs two characters being split-voted? If any large scale tactical voting was made blatant, it was that.) Kana, not so much...but It's Mio, who is supposed to trump Yui in power. Though I wasn't really using this yr as a gauge...2007 was where factions showed their true colors...

It's an interesting trick, but I still find it hard to believe that people would put enough trust in the interim counts for it to actually accomplish anything, considering all that's happened in the past. But then, I've seen examples of that in this thread before. My brain hurts.

Mikuru's Round 2 match underrates her by quite a bit. Characters in a match with two clearly stronger characters that are expected to have a close match sometimes take a huge hit. Voters can't really afford to give the weaker character a pity vote since every vote counts in deciding who will advance.

Examples from this year include Minami Touma in Touma vs Mihoko vs Mikoto, Nagase Minato in Minato vs Mei vs Tacos, Seto San in San vs Rinrin vs Ayumu vs Hajime and Miyako in Miyako vs Koromo vs Izumi vs Noriko. A pretty well known one from past Saimoe is Satoko in Satoko vs Fate vs Suigintou. I can probably find a couple more if I did a bit more searching.

Mikuru still clearly got boosted against Kagami, but I don't think Mikuru is as weak as her Round 2 match suggested.

And yeah, 2007 was really bad with strong characters getting killed before their time. It didn't really happen that much in 2008 or 2009, though.

Factions making weak characters seem powerful.

I think the best example of faction power is Strawberry Panic in 2006. Chikaru making it to the final 4.........REALLY!!! Yeah, she was pretty cool, but she is certainly not high tier.

Also, I don't think tactical votes were that blatant in the Yui vs. Hina match. You simply had 2 power houses going up against each other, those matches always get large totals since everybody is on top of their game.

You guys do realize that Yui vs. Hina was the #1 vs. #2. Also looking at the preliminary votes, Yui was the second highest vote count, behind Nodoka. Mio, was about 8th highest. Thus it might not be a good idea to underestimate Yui.

Not everybody ranks the character the same way. I'm sure you can find a lot of people who believe neither Yui nor Hinagiku were the strongest or second strongest of the final 16. But I will agree that Yui should not be underestimated. Even if Yui was weaker than Hinagiku, it wasn't by much.

Re: Hinagiku vs. Yui - no tactics involved. I think Saki has nothing to gain boosting one over the other, because these two are on the same tier, strength wise, hence a threat to them. The margin of votes show: is the closest of all the matches so far.

Re: Mikuru over Kagami - tactics obviously involved. i tip my hat to Toradora for this. If there ever was an excellent application of "just_as_planned", it certainly has to be this one.

Re: Kana over Mio - tactics involved, i speculate on the Saki side. only Mio has a shot at beating Kana, and now that she's gone, Kana is about 90-10 over Isumi on that block final.

so far this Saimoe reminds me of 2007: lots of surprises, strong charas getting knocked off early, series rivalries. now the only thing missing is a surprise winner out of the blue... now who is up to fill that role?

Predictions: 1-1 (7-5/106-28)
Picks: 0-2 (4-8/68-66)
Winners: Kushieda Minori, Aisaka Taiga

Bawwwwwww HnG lose. Oh well, Toradora isn't bad anyways.

Bolded is my pick, italics is my prediction.

Group G1
<<長門有希@涼宮ハルヒちゃんの憂鬱/にょろーん☆ちゅるやさん>> (Nagato Yuki @ Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yuuutsu / Nyoro~n☆Churuya-san)
<<涼宮ハルヒ(涼宮ハルヒちゃん)@涼宮ハルヒちゃんの憂鬱/にょろーん☆ちゅるやさん>> (Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi-chan) @ Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yuuutsu / Nyoro~n☆Churuya-san)
<<エルルゥ@OVA うたわれるもの>> (Eruruu @ Utawarerumono OVA)

Eruruu wins from split votes. Haruhi series fans are never going to agree on whether to support Yuki or Haruhi.

Group H2
<<原村和@咲 -Saki->> (Haramura Nodoka (Nodocchi) @ Saki)
<<宮村みやこ@ef - a tale of melodies.>> (Miyamura Miyako @ ef - a tale of melodies.)

No way Miyamiya can stand up against Saki faction.

Surprise winner. Can't be from Saki or HnG. It wouldn't be a surprise then.

more like Saki or K-On, right?

the way things are going right now, i'd be genuinely surprised if a character from HnG wins this

How come it seems that Hinagiku always does better in Best Moe Tournament compared to Saimoe or ISML?

In b4 "Baaaawww split", making assumptions all Haruhi voters would go with Yuki.

pretty low score for nodoka..
i wonder if its because no one thought there was a point in really trying or if its on purpose to make people think nodoka is weaker then she really is..
