It seems more like they just favor custom units over regular ones rather than SEED bashing.

That's my observation as well. They are painting the kitbashes in far better light than the originals. The latest episode insofar mention how kitbash modifications can translate to in-battle benefits.

So much so that if I scratch-built the whole gundam with Plasky plastic parts in-laid at every stress point with metal, for example using metal parts as the psychoframe substitute, using rare earth metals to achieve mag-lev joints like the NT-1, it could be bullshitted to be tankier than Axis Shock Unicorn and faster than Char!

The correct Gunpla term for this is "Scratch building"

Kit bashing is simply taking existing kits and parts and putting them together, with minimal at most modifications (usually for joints/polycaps and a paintjob)

Makes sense though, the more good work you put into the kit the better it will be than a kit built out of the box
