It's kind of a cliché, of sorts...

Where have there been actual hints that he is done for? We're only two episodes in here.

The hint is the simple fact that he's a sniper, mate. Like I said, it's a cliché. Nothing more, nothing less.

I would confirm this as the third person who come in my mind is Faldio

You could even add in being the best friend of the main character if you wanted. The Roy Focker cliche i guess.

Ozma has the biggest death flag of them all though. Without a doubt.

What trope would this fall under?

Roy was more of a mentor figure, not best friend. Queue Star Wars, Nadesico or Naruto.

I know that, though there's still a pretty big cliche out there for best friends dying, and Roy Focker would be apart of it. He's also apart of the mentor cliche, as you mentioned.

I don't even see why it matters anyway.

Yeah its quite interesting how much you can catch, when you know what to look for and aren't distracted by the pretty.

Oh I like Mikhail just fine (one of my favorite characters in this series), but the reason for comment is actually because Snipers in mecha series have a habit of dying especially if they're playboys.

Yeah him and practically every older Mecha ship captain out there.

Yeah, tell me about it. Ah, well. Here's to him surviving movie two.

Yep, the "grizzled old captain" also is a trope, although not reserved for anime.

The best captain is Adama from Battlestar Galactica. This is the only clip I could find and it's from one of the final episodes so stop at 40 seconds if you do not want to be spoiled!!

If any of you have not watched that series yet...do so...immediately.

Thanks, but no thanks. I watched some of the early episodes. Too dark for my taste. I'm more of a Babylon 5 type of guy.

You don't know what you're missing. Speaking as one who enjoyed both series immensely.

Oh, I actually zapped through some of the later stuff. It really didn't tickle my fancy. I'm just not a fan of works which are too pessimistic about human nature.

It has it's ups and downs but it is more on the dark side, yeah. But the thing is, the characters are real. You can see how they think and why. It wasn't written out from start to finish before hand like Babylon 5 but the writing is superb. The music is really good too. And if you watch it on BD, the video is unbelievable. You can see each and every stitch and each shade of bruising, really good stuff. I can't recommend it enough. BUT, you said you tried it and that's all that really matters.

Staying on topic...Global is awesome.

I agree. Bill Adama is the man. I actually have all of BSG and B5 both on DVD, but back on topic:

The impression I had of Wilder is that he is a bit of a renegade, and probably got to be more so after his wife died. I really have to wonder where SMS got the Macross Quarter, as it is one of the finest and most modern warships in Macross Frontier. I always assumed Wilder stole it somehow.

Now I just need to watch the first two episodes again so I can get in on the discussion more properly.

Can't you just think he attained it because of his rank and skills?

& it sounds like must watch Battlestar Galactica.

All of the fleets have a Macross to defend it. Quarter is so nice because Frontier is the latest fleet.

Quarter is quite special because the Frontier fleet has Battle frontier for a bigger defense mission.
MQ is as far as I can follow a recon and testing unit for the fleet which handles independent or under contractual assignment/order.

Yes, we'll see it a few episodes later. Latest when Alto wrecks his birdie for the first time
