The promise was that he would call upon Saber when he's in danger, which he didn't do when he fought Rider.

The mana link between a Servant and a Master is established automatically when the summon is completed. But since Saber's summon was "incomplete", the link is weak (though even if it's there, Shirou doesn't have enough to support Saber in combat anyway).

For the whole mana supply thing, here's an interesting link in case you guys are interested:

Leaving out the spoilers, here are the important numbers:

Saber's Max MP: 1200 ~ 1300
Usage during battle with Berserker: 200
Usage during battle with Lancer: 50
Usage during battles where no damage is sustained: 10
Amount of mana recovered in one day: 8
Amount of mana required to remain materialized for one day: 6
Usage of (Noble Phantasm): 700 ~ 800

Shirou's Max MP: 20 ~ 50?
Usage of Strengthening: 2
Usage of Trace: 5

Rin's Max MP: 500 (With external supply, 1000)

So as we can see, Shirou is pretty much useless even with a proper link.

the first sword is Excalibur, the second is Avalon, which before now resided within Shirou's body when Kitsirigi sealed it within Shirou at the end of the last Holy Grail War. His trace materialized it.

Her main sword is Excalibur (the less decorated one). The other one is Caliburn (the sword Authur pulled out of the stone and broke later in battle, before receiving Excalibur from Lady of the Lake) (In other myths, the two are the one and the same sword).

Shirou traced Caliburn during the last battle with Berserker in Fate route for Saber.

Avalon is Excalibur's sheath.

Tracing is the power granted to Shirou through his Reality Marble.

Basically, it allows him to create a mirror copy of anything he has seen at least once, though the copy will be reduced one rank in ability. (hence the significance of Shirou learning the elements/blueprint of objects)

Not just the object is copied, but the memories of the object is copied as well. Basically, it allows Shirou to automatically become an expert with the object (though IIRC, his skill with it is automatically reduced one rank as well), as well as being able to see flashes of the memory of the object.

In actuality though, Shirou's true power is

Not Tracing, but Imaging, the power to create anything his will can allow. Tracing is just easier.

Correct me if I'm wrong about this, but a Reality Marble is basically the inner reflection of one's beliefs, life, and soul forced into manifestation upon reality.

Every person possesses a Reality Marble, but it's normally not manifested.

It requires a great deal of concentration and mana to keep up and expand a Reality Marble, because the user is forcing their own world into reality, over riding Gaia's, whom continuously attempts to crush the alternate reality.

ah, so Shirou has the mana but the knowledge to use his magic, but im still confuse on the 2 swords that Saber possess, Yes, I have heard of ExCalibur...but Caliburn...? ehhhhhh?is it something implement into the anime by Type-Moon?

Avalon is Saber's most powerful (EX rank, compared to Excalibur's A++ rank) Noble Phantasm, it pretty much blocks anything. In the Arthurian legends, Excalibur's sheath/scabbard (which would protect its owner from any harm) was stolen, so Saber never really "came standard" with Avalon as a Noble Phantasm. But since Shirou had it, he returned it to her.

Shirou's trace and reality marble... Well, since it's not revealed yet, I'll leave that unspoiled for now.

By the way, Trace usually costs a LOT more MP than that "5" it costs for Shirou (and it required actual raw materials (aka Alchemy rules) AND prolonged periods of concentration). The reason why Shirou can do it "for cheap" and without raw materials is all because of his Reality Marble.

I forgot to mention this earlier, but the mana supply from a Master to a Servant is constant and automatic through the link. Shirou's act of sleeping with Saber is kind of like the equivalent of a "manual pump" as opposed to the usual "automatic pump"... Oh dear.

I wonder how much MP a "charge of semen" is worth...

In some other Arthurian legends, Caliburn doesn't exist, and the Excalibur was the Sword in the Stone instead, and the Lady of the Lake never existed.

Actually, I thought excalibur and caliburn were one in the same, and the traced sword was a slightly inferior version of excalibur because of the limits of trace. I figured the whole caliburn/excalibur thing was just a phonetic/morphological variation of the same word - a result during its translation.

Oh, I have a question:

Since the reality marble is a refleaction of one's core being in physical manifestation, would disrupting it cause harm to the user?
Btw, I heard Shirou's was always active but never realized it.
