I've failed to see the point of this show so far. Episode 1 was really misleading, I thought it was going to be some romance about forbidden love between the hero and the demon queen.

It will all be revealed in due time. Now how far they can get to in 12 episodes will be the interesting part.

Modernisation. To build a society from the ground up.

Well in a meta sence he's the Watson, the person ideas are explained too. As for his role in the Maou's plan, who knows, but if it takes a Maou to fix the human's problems maybe it will take a Hero to fix the demons.

It's only when crop is planted into the divisions that were used for clover and turnips that the farmers can observe that the clover an turnip grazing fields help sustain soil nutrients. Since the rotation is on a four year cycle, with each division rotated annually, it would take more than a year for the farmers to observe sustainability.
It will be quite clear to anyone with a farming background that come time to till it the clover field has much better soil then haveing the same feild set fallow as not only do you have it fertilized by the live stock but clover is itself a soil enriching plant so even if the 4 crop rotation is a bust ( highly unlikely as it is one of the key componets of the British Agricultural Revolution durring the 18th centery) they have still found a way to incress food perduction by replaceing fallow fields with clover grazeing land there by opening up more useable farmland.

Are you certain? I was under the impression that the qualities of improved soil that are observable to the naked eye come from a general accumulation of dead organic matter. However, clovers and turnips were desirable for soil enrichment specifically because of nitrogen fixation (and CO2 fixation for turnips). The soil then would not exhibit traits that would be observable to a farmer, however experienced he may be.

But suppose the soil's quality were observable to the naked eye, then the effect would still not be observable until year 2, because the rotation is on a one year cycle.

If you're expecting this show to be focusing on (forbidden) romance, you'll be disappointed. As others have mentioned, this show is mostly about economy-building and the quest for peaceful coexistence between two worlds with the means of modernization. Yes, there is (forbidden) romance going on, but it's only secondary.

I never got the impression that it was terribly forbidden. Everybody in the show seems pretty cool with it, honestly.

Yes, I know. That's why I put the word "forbidden" in brackets since it's only forbidden in a way of how the general people/demons view it (for the time being, at least).

Easily my favorite show of the season, even beating Haganai at the moment....The chemistry of the main characters is really pushing the show, and just the overall tone sells it. Well done ARMS....

Maybe his confusion is from mixing up this show with other media.

Spoiler for Off-topic:

Back to topic:
It's not quite forbidden. The demons in this show looks more like humans than some humans. Later, they will show some demons as if they are from fairy tales.

It's just that the way they did episode 1 was misleading. They really didn't get into the whole economy-building until episode 2.

I just find this boring and slow, with no real interesting characters except Maou herself. Everyone else seems generic. Nothing about this really pops out at you making you want to watch this show. (Except maybe Maou's chest )

I think it depends on the individual. Most fans of this story (novel & mangas) like it mainly because of its “intelligent” plot (e.g. economic strategy, agriculture methods, etc) and witty characters wrapped in fantastical setting. That’s something we rarely see in medieval fantasy anime. Some even consider Maoyuu as a “deconstruction” of the usual RPG fantasy game/anime. If some consider this boring, then this story is simply not their thing IMO.

PS: Even though it's not the main drive, we do appreciate Maou's chest .

The only "complaint" I might lodge is that setting up the world and the exposition seems to be at some expense of time budget on character illumination - which might be why takai thinks they're a bit generic.

Personally, intelligent and witty is a win for me so far.

Oh, I actually agree with that. In fact, I’ve already posted some pages ago how this second episode is a disappointment to me. They get the exposition just fine (Yes, they left things out. That’s just the way it is), but their treatment/execution of the newly-introduced characters (Head Maid, Big-sis & Lil-sis) is really lacking. So lacking that they felt generic, just like takai said. Not to mention the less-than-stellar character animation (they barely move in some scenes and facial expression is flat in many occasions).

Even with that, many anime-only viewers who have posted here thought that this 2nd eps is better than the previous one. It got me thinking, if only ARMS can do the characters & animation better, this 2nd episode will be truly great.

I feel like it's more of time restraints. They are flying through the scenes like it's nothing, as the result they don't really have time to sit back and let the audience absorb the things they just saw.

Why is there people complaining about generic characters?

That stock critique doesn't really work for this particular show.

The teleportation magic used at the start of EP2 was one of Hero's power.

I (anime-only watcher) also think that the second episode is an improvement over the first one. Less focus on Maou's boobs and more focus on the story is a good thing for this anime.

I don't mind that the characters (other than Maou) feel underdeveloped because I see them as archetypes, as evidenced by the fact that they are only referred by a title, not a proper name. I think this is more a plot-driven show than character-driven.

Yeah. It is clearly intentional that all the characters don't have real names. They are not "individuals". They are concepts, populations, social views, and social groups. Each person are not a special snowflake, but are instead meant to represent large numbers of their type in society.

This is about macroeconomics and social engineering; how to generate long term happiness for the whole population with the least amount of pain.

It's the difference between giving food to one hungry person, and trying to make sure an entire nation has enough food to feed its people.

Yuusha also demonstrated his teleportation magic in the scene in which lil sis maid brought him bread. When she first sat down with him, there was nothing behind them. Then while they were talking, a giant dead boar somehow manage to appear behind them.
