Imho the character that visually is least similar to the original is, to be honest, Kyon-ko. It's a really good thing they made her keep her cardigan - not quite sure how, but it definitely lends a deeper sense of the basic Kyon personality to her. |

First of all, bravo to Kang Seung Jae.
Ok. After the flawless victory with Kang Seung Jae, here's a tribute on my part. Spoiler for So Kyon, how does doing the Kawasumi Mai pose feel like?:

Jintor: Hmm... well I definitely feel that Kyonko is actually really good. But I can see your point about Itsuki -- having Itsuko go along with whatever Haruhi has in mind fits the character, and male Haruhi would probably find it "hot" ... knowing that Kyonko isn't "that way". Whereas in the original story a perceived romantic interest to Kyon other than Haruhi herself set off bad "end the world" vibes ^_^;;
I wonder though -- why was the name Haruki settled upon anyways? Haruhi is a gender-neutral name to begin with so using it would be fine, and I've never heard the name Haruki used before in any anime/manga or any credits or other Japanese names I've seen anywhere. |

Although one possible kanji combination (春氣) is gender-neutral. I'm hungary. Please give this poor guy a cookie |

I'd say for my own character analysis of what Kyonko would be like, and fitting to the accepted design:
As I read somewhere earlier, Kyonko would be no-nonsense with most things in life: Not terribly concerned with high fashion, doesn't get involved in social cliques at school and stupid gossip chatter, or stand out in any major way. If 5 was average on looks, she would rate something like a 6-7... nothing spectacular but not ugly and she has her own charm about her if you care to get to know her, etc. Probably mildly on the tsundere side, if only slightly. She tags along on Haruhi's crazy ideas and club, but not entirely sure why. Doesn't care for Haruhi's ecchi ideas, but can be bullied into going along with them by Haruhi. Just don't ask her to act the part like Itsuko likes doing. Eventually resigns herself to the situation, albeit slightly embarassed, but not super self-conscious about it like normal Asahina would. I'll stop now as I'm losing my train of thought, what with it being 7am here I should sleep lol... EDIT PS: It's just that headbands on a guy, especially yellow ones, would be incredibly girly. It's just hard to get anything iconic like a hair accessory to work for a male character, especially bright yellow. And it totally doesn't match the dark-green blazer the guys wear |

Well, you did say you hit the jackpot...
I dunno. I still prefer headphones, but as Kaisos has said, there's never any real mention of Haruhi's headband in the novel... so, nyeh. This could still go either way. |

Headbands seem like a better choice than head phones, considering we can go for the pulled back hair. This like a much more believable moe for Kyonko to have than spikes. I say we stick with headbands, and hair pulled back moe. |

I've been baffled by this as well, I mean why call Kyon.....kyon-ko? i mean...kyon isa gender neutral as well. besides i like the fact tht you can still call them the same names, but obviously the gender specific antics are clear as day! it's almost like Tanigawa made it specifically so that the names of the main characters are gender neutral

The main reason for the changed names is differentiation. If I use Haruhi as opposed to Haruki, you immediately know who I'm talking about. Same with Kyon and Kyonko.
Basically, it's for ease of use and understanding. |
