Significant cuts to this episode to make both chapters fit

Free really surprised me. I didn't remember him being so silly in the manga.

Agree on being surprised at Free's silliness. I haven't read the relevant chapters recently, but at a guess I'd say in their condensation they took out more of the badass parts and left in more of the comedy parts and thus changed the ratio of his character. Also, because of the way he came and left (sort of) in one episode he feels more like a one-shot villain than he should. Kind of like all the lead-up from last episode went nowhere.

Average episode, but necessary to move the plot forward and introduce the next member of the "villain squad." I can sort of see why Bones wanted to move through this as efficiently as possible, but I do think some potential badassery was lost.

I just love his silly personality and to think he accidentally turned himself into an ice cube
Though I could have sword that Maka used Tsubaki for a bit during the fight scene in the manga...maybe they cut that out so the episode didn't overrun (or maybe I just remembered wrongly ).

And so it starts...with Maka and Soul not synching up well and Maka herself couging up black blood. I think though throughout this whole arc Maka is the one more at fault than soul. She really needs to take a break and stop stressing so much about being strong...I mean, B*S is just B*S...she needs to do things which suits her way

I think the thing about Maka and strength, Deathkillz, is that she blames herself for Soul getting hurt by Chrona. She wants to be strong at the moment to protect him and make sure nothing like that happens again. Black Star on the other hand is more into being powerful for the sake of it. And I cannot wait for the test episode. Absolutely loved it in the manga.

- Free completely pwning the guards would have been such an awesome and gratuitously violent sequence... damn.
- Maka Chop scene skipped before entering the training room... bleh.
- Maka and Soul scene at their apartment skipped... no Blair too.
- Maka wielding Tsubaki... DON'T CUT THIS PART OUT! IT WAS THE BEST PART OF THE FIGHT!
- Dialogue cuts... well yeah.
- Foreshadowing sequence...well they can tack that on next episode I suppose.

Maka/Tsubaki team-up being missing. I hope they remedy this somehow, but it obviously wouldn't be the same as having it right then when Maka simply couldn't use Soul. Soul, of all people. These events are the ones that build up their relationship, and they miss out a crucial battle-related point of Maka being forced to use someone other than her fairly devoted (would die for his Tech) partner.

Admit when I was following along for translation purposes was a big loss. Maka/Tsubaki would have been such a cool thing to have in there. Too bad that some stuff would be lost because of compressing a couple chapters into one episode. Goes to show Tsubaki can work on a certain level with anyone though the compatibility isn't as good as their regular partners.

Still was something when she got pissed at Maka/Soul. Managed to get them back into the fight though things still aren't that great. Maka seems to have Black Blood inside of her though how that happened I'm not sure. Not to mention her head still isn't in a good place. Considering she tackled the guy off the bridge intending to go down as well. Not to mention Soul still has this major problem inside of him that could create a very bad situation in the near future.

Didn't think we'd see the Fey Blade mode too soon. Though apparently it was too quick since it couldn't be used for very long. Way too risky by Black Star to use that since it left Maka,Soul, and Tsubaki to fend for themselves. Still pretty cool to see them using the shadow and would have gotten a good attack in. Still assuming that Black Star and Tsubaki were sent out with Maka/Soul just in case something happened. In the end managed to get back up and help out.

Test looks to be crazy though. Think Kid's head exploded there...messy . Though Black Star looks terrible himself. Should be fun at any rate.

Cuz I cant help reading the spoilers but Im confused on one part that everyone says is missing from this epi...

How is it that Maka was able to weild Tsubaki in the manga? BS could use Soul when they fought Kid. Maybe Im missing something not being a manga reader, just curious is all.

I think it's just that Tsubaki's personality (and thus her soul wavelength) makes her a type that just about anyone can use, though some would be more effective with her than others. Black Star couldn't use Soul because their wavelengths clashed instead of complimenting each other.

Yeah like Stein said, Tsubaki is highly compatible. So not that big a surprise that Maka can work with her to a degree. Of course its not a perfect compatibility and Maka has developed a fighting style around a scythe. But in a pinch have the ability to work together.

Sadly takes a certain kind of person to work with Black Star and Soul isn't it .

Depending on how things go in the next couple of weeks, I don't think it will be that much of a problem. My theory is they pushed this episode so that the next one would fall right in with the new season.

Man thats kind of depressing to hear(yes, i havent read the manga and like to watch the anime first to avoid these type of situations, then read the manga after the show is done. The only manga i read that runs at the same time as the anime show is BLEACH.)

It depends on how often they're going to decide to put two manga chapters into one episode in the future, it looks like the next ep will be back to the one chapter format. Anyway I don't think the cuts were really that bad a thing in the case, it would have felt too stretched out if they'd used two eps IMO.

I was thinking that episode 14 (adapted from chapter 12) would be the end of the first cour, and that episode 25 (which I think will be adapted from chapter 23) would be the end of the second cour. But it all depends on how long a cour for this series is (which can range from 12-14 episodes).

Haven't watched the episode yet, but I am disappointed that they cut out the things that were listed earlier. Free was both a silly character and a bad ass one if I remember correctly (I haven't read those chapters in a while).

Next episode is one I wanted to see get animated if only for a good laugh.

The normal season is 13 weeks long. All of the new anime series are starting from tomorrow, and the new ending will be in next week's episode.

Hmm... I think they'll cut that altogether. There's no way the anime will make it to the resolution of that arc without some restructuring or original material.
