Nyarko 06 - Video Game War Core

Finally, Rider nods are back in full force. And some more recent stuff at that. Those flashes of red, yellow and green when Nyarko transformed this time can only mean OOO (Tatoba!), and Mahiro's mom used Accel's catchphrase when knocking down the Xoth's drones. Though Kamen Rider Nyarko didn't get to do that much, which she was visibly annoyed by. Great stuff.

And as predicted, the majestic anticlimax all had to do with video games. (Gives new meaning to Red Ring of Death, doesn't it?) The economics of the game market were pretty spot on. Given the low sales of the Xbox in Japan, this was probably meant to parallel that. Nyarko's distraction tactic in the fight was another great gag. There's a pun I want to make on Cuko and queen(ing), but it's hard to find the right way to phrase it.

It's been three weeks or so getting here, and it was worth it. A nice conclusion to the console war, a new character and some fanservice on the side. Tamao even got screentime! Now, if Nyarko is OOO, then the question must be asked: Who's Kougami?

The first half is pretty decent despite I'm whining for Yoriko evily controlated by the bitchy Luhi. With Xoth references and Nyaruko's Kamen Rider mode for the second time, I find it funny, even with Hastur's father flashback and Yoriko using forks as weapons. Second half focuses on Hastur's arrival at the school followed by beach time ! Too bad the onsen scenes feels awkward due to Hastur bathing solely at home-like bathroom rather than bathing in the male bath. Nonetheless, Nyaruko wanting to have sex with Mahiro is pure lol.
Next episode continues with the summer festival and more romantic moments !

I'm so glad that the characters have become so genre-savvy that they never even considered the possibility that Hastur might really leave.

I want to really hand it to Kuuko this episode. I was certain I'd be completely sick of her "depraved lesbian" schtick by now, but she's got the best lines in the show. From her emotionless lament re: the dangers of no-bungee-bungee-jumping, to her infatuated eagerness to purchase an Xoth Gold account, to her opportunistic "Mahastur" shipping, she makes me grin every time she's on screen. Bonus points for putting on a brave face to give the Xoth 731 the Old Yeller treatment.

That is so true; it usually takes me no more than one episode to get tired of "nutty lesbian chases uninterested straight girl" antics, but Kuuko remains hilarious. On the other hand, it usually takes me less time to get bored with "nutty straight girl chases uninterested guy" (having burned out all my tolerance for that trope in the 90s) and I'm finding Nyarko funny too.

On the other hand, Xoth. Frickin' Xoth. These people have some serious love for the Mythos to even have heard of Xoth, and they properly associated it with Cthulhu (it's the star where in Lin Carter's stories Cthuhlu mated with Idd-Yah to produce their three offspring) and then managed to get a pun out of it. It's that kind of stuff that makes this series awesome even though I'm fully aware I'm missing more than half of the anime references.

Though I have to ask...am I the only person who looked at Hastur, said "boy," and immediately started wondering if he would turn out to be a reverse trap since every other Great Old One or Outer God has been female thus far?
