Why is Index singing some other anime opening? Is it some sort of promotion?

No, someone with a lot of time on their hands just decided to lip sync footage of her from the first episode. Three links (to the good ones) have been posted so far in this thread.

Touma on the bridge = Tales of the Abyss OP
Firestarter = Tales of Destiny OP
Index on the ledge = Tales of Phantasia OP

And her t-shirt... best! (it's remind me for Aozaki Aoko from Tsukihime, but Kaori clothing style much more sexier than Aoko's)

Fail for attempting to hotlink to Danbooru images (it shows up blank to people who haven't gone to the link manually and don't have it in their cache). And anyway, this is not the place for a tit fight. Large breasts are in abundance in anime and its fanart.

Wait, do you think that this show can function without fan-service? I do realize that it's not (and shouldn't be) at the levels of Rosario + Vampire, but from what I've seen of the first three episodes, the show functions on fan-service. Take it out and you'll get another generic shounen action series.

When a show starts out with this many tropes, I've noticed that they're better off going all the way and spamming different incarnations of tropes in a bid for some originality or meaning.

well he said to stay away from unneeded fanservice, my guess is that he meant "needed" fanservice is fine

but that'll depend on one's interpretation

Spoiler for ep4: I mean, yeah... We think we get an action episode, and we really get a super talking episode. Again. And not only that, but what they say are considerably angsty, not necessarily in the good meaning. We start off the episode. Some great animated action! And... Then we get to see the characters talk and shout at each other. Mah... And they just stand there and talk and talk and talk, until Kanzaki snap, makes a facial distortion (insert me laughing at the sudden thing), and pounds Touma, who gives another life lesson before he faints. And then we have him wake up, only to have the magicians come. Not only that, but the art quality for that scene bugs and Index looks noticeably too slim... Well... JC Staff didn't do anything wrong. Compared to Toradora, this is following the novel to quite a degree. Just the author... Though, it does get better in later volumes... To put it all together, while it wasn't great, this angst-episode where the bad guys reveal they are "good" guys was better than the previous episode. Reaction to the revelation that Kanzaki and Stiyls were friends with Index: Manga - Yes, yes, go figure Novel - Ah, kind of emotionally moving Anime - .................................................. ......ぼーっと Ah~, dame da... This wasn't the type of episode to watch when half-tired... JC Staff worked hard drawing Kanzaki's body, yes? Eroi, eroi~ Preview: Two more episodes? Spoiler: While s_b is generally right that this episode had alot of exposition AGAIN, I'd like to stress one other point: The animation in this episode was _outstanding_. Extremely detailed backgrounds. Very fluid motions, displayed from some pretty unusual angles. And - here I disagree with him - also some very nice facial expressions during the exchanges. To put it bluntly, of all the shows I've seen in this season, none come _close_ to the production values of this anime. Well, we'll soon be through the initial arc, and then things will run much more smoothly ... nevertheless, the animation definitely was a big selling point to me.
