Thank god that there 9 BDs announced for this show, meaning it's two cour. I was worried it would become ultra rushed, but now that's put to rest.
Anyways, the episode was fairly predictable but I thought the execution for the most part was spot on, with a particularly disturbing scene towards the end. What this episode did was really send home the message of what this series is like and doesn't leave any doubt about what can happen in it. However now that these first two anime original background episodes are over it's time to get to the real plot next episode. We still haven't met our main protagonist (a guy), and the other 3 main characters of the show! So hopefully once we meet them and things slow down a little bit we'll start being able to get to some characterization which is the essential missing element in the show so far. While I'm sure we can keep picking apart the setting, I think they've done enough to setup a compelling conflict. I think the series deserves credit for being ambitious, something so many series lack these days, and it's mostly offering up valid explanations with a bit of hand waving (But hey that's part of fiction). Looking forward to the next episodes.

Man...this shit is good!
I don't have any other exposure to Muv-Luv other than knowing about the mecha and BETA. Characters, story, etc, all unknown to me till the anime. Seeing those BETA eat people, whoooo boy, brutal. |

The scene where BETA were eating people reminded me of War of the Worlds. I just hope it doesn't become as desperate as that was. Though judging from the preview, the tone of the series might be changing next episode.

Anyway, I assume the pilot of the purple takemikazuchi could be none other than the Shogun herself, Koubuin Yuuhi.

epi 2
wow that pretty brutal.. censored to the max but .. wow the series seem like a keeper, much better then all the other released this season.. i still don't really like the mecha design a good point is that they ain't fully relying on fanservices to sell the show and it show promise of a plot can't wait until the next epi |

when i watched ep 1 my reaction was meh... mecha slice of life, with girls saving the day while providing fanservice, then ep 2 came and pretty much "killed" my misconception of the series, wake up slap that ga-rei zero had in its first ep, the animation was very average but the plot seems to be serious and dark wich is enough to keep me hooked to the end.

Edit: upon a second look, it could have been a purple one. I still think it looks more blue though, but its definitely a Type-00R. |

That was an exciting second episode, although totally expected since I did read through this thread starting last week. It would have been nicer not to have known and get "baptized" with the second episode, but what is done, is done.
My reaction after that last mecha showed up to save Yui was, "if they had weapons that can easily slice through the enemy like that, why didn't they give it out to all the other soldiers who have died in the millions." All weapons before this seem quite useless for the most part, unless you hit them in the right spot. You lose like 3 soldiers for every beta you kill, it seems. Then this one mecha at the end comes and wipes out a whole battalion. It just didn't seem to make sense, and it seemed quite unfair to all the dead soldiers. I also wished Yamashiro, the "rival", survived at the end. She reminded me so much of Tsugumi from Guilty Crown. It was quite an unfortunate tragedy. So now, the series will head towards a counterattack of sorts. I'm hoping that the series will end up at least on a somewhat positive note. It feels like a mix of Gunbuster and Blue Gender at the moment.

I don't think that it is the weapon, but the TSF itself, with better reaction time, resistance etc. What the girls had been handling was the red shirt mech. It's like in eve online, where the difference between T1 and T2 ships can be quite big.

Plus it was piloted by a Royal. Who would be well trained much more so than Yui's squadron of cadets pressed into the battle with no support or combat experience.

I hope we'll see more of the Koto kits with Total Eclipse. I'm gunning for the F-22A still but a SU-37 or F-15 would get me pretty excited.

The Takemikazuchi looks blue to me.
The pilot is probably General Ikaruga. He is minor character from the VN though I heard he play major role in side stories. I doubt the Shogun is the pilot. It doesn't make sense for leader of the nation to fight in the front line. Ikaruga fights the BETA in the front line though |

Not everything will be logical, this is mecha anime after all. I was satisfied that the instructor explained their stupidity in staying at one place and get surrounded by mentioning some orderto hold the spot. Otherwise I would've pulled my hair out for the reasoning behind using these lightly armoured mechs as stationary gun turrets against an overwhelming horde.
