Guess I'll give this a shot come that date.

Also, am I the only one that is thinking of Xena: Warrior Princess when seeing that title?

Edit: This was a quick drop. I thought this was supposed to be about pirates. All I saw that episode were clowns and comedy.

First two episodes are out I thought it visually looks great (as expected from Production I.G.) the setting is interesting (fantasy Caribbean) but the story but the characters and story aren't doing much for me. Yukimaru being a violent tsundere is difficult to like.

I'll give it a few more episode see where it goes.

Saw the first two episodes and I loved it, not what I expected, but I welcome it.

I dropped The Detective is Already Dead and picked this up instead. It's a big improvement!

Decent enough start. Parts of it did oddly feel almost Disney-ish. It works as a whole though. Fena is a pretty decent lead with pros and cons which works fine. The downside is that flashback Yukimaru was way less annoying than current Yukimaru. A mostly silent tsundere that occasionally lashes out violently isn't a great combination. The loudly outstpoken tsundere isn't perfect itself, but I think it's better since there is more of a personality there.

Overall not bad though. Too bad the old guys are being left behind since they were kind of great .

I wouldn't have minded a bit more conflict over Fena being left to take up her father's incredibly vague and unknown mission. She spent a decade effectively enslaved. I think she's had enough on her plate without picking up something that may be important but clearly wasn't all that pressing since it was able to sit for 10 years before Fena could pick it back up again. But I suppose without her father's mysterious mission no one (besides the old guys) even bothers trying to save her so I guess it works out.

Aside from being pretty, I'd say it's a somewhat weak start. The hero completely knocking out!! the girl he was sent to save by wacking her in the head did not enamor me to the show at all. I kinda want her to take his gifted short sword thing and stab him with it the next time he goes for her head... Really... the show needs both a villain and a purpose. Who opposes Fena? And what is her mission to "Eden" really about? Fill in those two things and maybe get a bit more serious and less randomly assault-y and it might have a chance.

Favorite character so far: Non-plussed mechanic girl.

@Ragashingo

Yeah, I do not approve of the head-bashing either. I guess it's supposed to be "funny" and I like moody tsun-boys as much as the next girl.... but I don't find this very cute. :/

The show is good but that "haircut" is ugly as fuck. Undo it.

(also hi, I'm back lol)

Yes! Karin. She'd get along with Constanze from Little Witch Academia.

The series is visually great, but everything else is average so far. The characters seem like someone just went down a checklist of stereotypes and checked off a couple boxes for each, complete with the standard edgy lines for the male lead. Not necessarily a bad thing, and Fena is nice as a female protagonist who doesn't start off as a meek pushover, but the male lead is grating whenever he opens his mouth.

Also, the progression of the plot felt really jarring. Why was Fena expected to just accept and carry out her father's grand quest less than a day after she escaped bondage and learned about it? And if the island chief was going to send the group out with Fena anyway, why didn't they help to bring her to safety in the first place instead of watching the two servants bumble about? Was there actually a point to working behind the scenes, or were they just trying to make the group seem mysterious and cool at the cost of common sense?

The soldier's coloring is too similar to Fena's to be a coincidence. If this series is just going to consist of standard tropes, he's probably going to end up being her long lost brother who was responsible for killing their father or something.

Since the production is by Western companies, I cannot help but read too deeply into why the heroine cut her hair.
...Yeah......

Thematic hair cutting is a time honoured anime tradition though.

And not even short. Super-short. Mulan looked good.
She wasn't exactly cute in the first place too, but then this.
Like the wise man said, she not only cut her hair, but also the (amount of) viewers

Not exactly a creation of fiction. Cutting hair is/was symbolic in some cultures. Sumo wrestlers cut off their topknots when they retire. People (both men and women) still cut their hair to symbolize grief or moving on.

Should have had her go the Zuko route. She's going to be wearing a bandana and hat anyway, from Stark700's post up top. Take it all off.

Oh yeah? I didn't actually know this.

Her hair would look way better if it was just above her shoulders, imho. How did she give herself an eight-year-old boy's haircut WITH A SWORD without slicing her neck open though?

Well...if the OP is anything to go by, it will get longer again...and I do think there is potential in the show for a great adventure so I'll look forward to Toonami every Saturday night.

They should have spent more time on building up to that moment. Frankly, all she did was talk a bit to a few Bishounens, and poof, off goes her hair. It is obvious what they were getting at, but it wasn't convincing.
And considering they spent half of the first episode on two guys that become impossibly idiotic for (not funny) comedic moments, they definitely had the time.

Awwww, I thought her daughter-ish relationship with the two old guys was cute and heartwarming And I did think they were funny!

Someone on another forum pointed out that perhaps Fena wanted to look less pretty as way of firmly rejecting her former life at the brothel.

That makes damn good sense, actually...I mean, it worked
