i like it, but that doesnt mean u would. another man's meat is another man's poison, bla bla bla..
that's just how it is, so in this case, majority of the ppl here like Exile (me included) but of course there are a few exceptions. the story builds up every ep and the visuals rock, but the story is a bit lacking in a few areas but nevertheless very unique. just my 2 cents |

Last Exile top 5 in Japan? Could someone confirm this?
(This ought to be the right forum as Last Exile's been on DVD so far...)
Ok, there's this really big fan of Last Exile on this other forum, he's coming very close to attaining fanboi-status... and he's really annoying me, then he goes and says this: ..."On additional research, it was Top 5 for a long time in Japan. Claus was a high placer in best male character polls. And Last Exile is outselling everything on DVD at the moment in the US and here in Australia."... I wouldn't be surprised if this simply was what he wanted to believe. o_o What would be in the Top 5? I'd expect those long running trademark series like Doraemon and Sazae-san and that stuff... not Last Exile! And in "high placer", does anyone NOT think this probably means #90 on the top 100? Because somehow I just don't see it... maybe it's just because everyone keeps saying that Last Exile was rather rushed at the end because there just wasn't enough popularity for it? Also, about the Australia thing, does anyone have confirmed stats about it? Because if all of that was true then I'd be somewhat interested. I know for a fact it's a favourite of many people online who mostly live in America etc. ... but in Japan, what is it like? (I will personally bow down in thanks if kj1980 spares time to write a post because he'd probably know best about the Japan thing.) Thanks so much! And please, do type the "you lazy f***, go search it for yourself on google, somebody close this thread" posts, because I kind of deserve it. I really should go search but maybe if more people knew... meh ^^: |

I think he's referring to Last Exile being top 5 in some magazine anime polls... Because it happened to be a late night anime airing on the smallest major Tokyo regional network (TV Tokyo) and attained TV ratings of less than 1.5 (as opposed to say, Sazae-san's 18.0's)...
Plus it dropped off pretty quickly, for example in the Newtype polls I think it was only up in the top 20 anime listing two or three times. Unlike say, Gundam Seed.

Like I said on a different thread, the "Top 5" stuff depends on which sample the poll taker decides to take from.
I seriously doubt "Last Exile" would be considered as one of the best anime ever created for the Japanese population as a whole. Let's take the States for example. If one were to poll the entire population of the United States on the best animation, the top rankings would definitely go to Disney animation from the late 1940s to the early 1950s - when Disney made animations with stories that were actually good, like "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves." If you reduce the sample size to say..."Gen X'ers and Gen Y'ers), it will most likely be "South Park" or "The Simpsons." Perhaps the reference that person was using was a poll targeting a sample of people like us (i.e.: Newtype Magazine, Animage, etc.) Then, of course it will be skewed towards animes that a "normal person" will/cannot watch. Then there is the issue when "Last Exile" was being shown. "Last Exile" was shown on TV Tokyo every Wednesdays at 25:30-26:00 (Thursdays 1:30AM-2:00AM). The two things to point out here is that: A. TV Tokyo . Out of all the major [VHF] stations, TV Tokyo (Channel 12) is the most dimunitive. Many animes that are targeted toward otakus are/were shown on TV Tokyo (i.e.: Slayers, Neon Genesis Evangelion, etc.). The reason? TV Tokyo has the cheapest time slots compared to other larger TV stations. And, it gets even more cheaper if it shown late at night...which will go on to... B. Wednesdays at 25:30-26:00 It is in the middle of the week at 1:30-2:00AM. Unless you happen to really love anime, most people will be asleep. Kids have school and adults have to go to work the next day. Only anime otakus watch anime with such a late night showing. So to answer you question: " know for a fact it's a favourite of many people online who mostly live in America etc. ... but in Japan, what is it like?" The answer will be...something similar to America. It was a good anime that was worth watching by anime otakus....but to the Japanese populace as a whole, it is not even worth mentioning as no anime can beat the popularity of "Doraemon" and "Sazaesan." Question: what is a "fanboi-status?" |

Ahhhh! ^_^ Thank you so much, kj1980! That was seiously very helpful, thank you so much...
Well, a TYPICAL "fanboi" would be people who 1. Love something to death even though they can never give proper reasons 2. Never have a single thing bad to say about the anime they like, oh no, not even an obviously bad part that proper fans would also point out... 3. Also love to flame other anime. 4. (Usually) cannot spell (therefore fanBOI.) A generalization I know... but there are some people I consider fanbois when they start gushing on and on about an anime without trying to look at it from a different point of view. And the point about THIS particular person is, he actually has watched rather little anime compared to the usual fan (not saying otaku)... And he's pretty misinformed, heck, in another post he thought Shingetsutan Tsukihime started in 2004 just because he saw the torrents for it only recently. Thank you very much for the information anyway, kj1980 and brightman! Now I shall go and pwn this guy... XD |

Last Exile on TechTV
I just saw the commercials on the TV a few minutes ago.
Last Exile will premier on TechTV's anime block, Anime Unleashed, March 8th through March 13th from 10pm to 11pm Eastern. I never got a chance to watch the subs, so I look forward to catching the dubs on TV. You can read the whole article >>HERE<< |

LE, what a fun ride that was (is). Good (non ground-breaking) series that lets you do some thinking on some monor questions related to the world. (i.e. There's room for interpretation at specific points throughout the series.) Very entertaining IMO.
It's worth noting that they're only going to show eps 1-13, and won't actually finish airing the show until the eps are finished with the dub process (2005). Interesting choice. The dub in the preview sounds fairly good as far as dubs go (although they only play a few lines of dialogue -- and please don't start another "dubs are evil" string in this thread, I think we're all well aware that dubs are a love it or hate it thing by now.). |
