Spain didn't play tiki-taka today. No smooth, metronomic passing, no careful buildup, no intelligent triangular movements, no pressing to win the ball back. The first half they had strong periods but even those were not tiki-taka, just long balls forward to Costa. The second half they didn't even bother to fight back while the game was still close.
Casillas had a shocking howler but the last Robben goal wasn't even his fault as he blocked then slowed Robben, but when Sergio Ramos ran off he knew it was up and looked desperate and broken. The Spanish back line is inexcusable, the midfield lost the crucial battles and possession far too easily, and neither Costa nor Torres pulled off the individual miracles that Robben and RVP did to bring the team back. The Dutch were sharp, their technical skills amazing, they pressed hard, they were hungry, they counter-attacked with speed, won most of the individual battles and inspired individual moments especially from Robben and RVP. I watched this thinking two great teams it's going to be fun. I didn't expect a demolition and World Cup stunner classic. Brazil 2014 is going to be absolutely nuts. P.S. I do not look forward to next season's Manchester United. |

Well with a goal from Cahill, its sorta keeps them in it. I too thought the massacre was starting <.<
Australia marking kinda is off and they don't seem to be holding possession all that well. They've had a poor lead up to the world cup, so I havent expected much. The commentator said they were ranked 64 in fifa rankings O_o

Del Bosque made tactical mistake by fielding Costa instead of a false 9. It made Spain's game very predictable. |

Thinking about it I find this fairly funny. The nation that has made the false nine popular Spain is seemingly moving back to a true forward while the premier counterattacking team of 2010 (Germany) is moving in the opposite direction with only one true forward (who by the way is 36).

A misleading 3-1, Chile dominated the match for about 20 minutes (doing 2 goals), the rest was Australia all the way, and they seemed closer to scoring the equaliser than Chile was in scoring the third goal, in the end, a chilean midfielder does a fantastic shot and that was it, but it'll be interesting to see what can Australia do when they face Holland and Spain.

Day 3 begins with a Group C game between Colombia and Greece.
It's said that Colombia's the contender to win the group, lets see if that's the really the case. Because often times, what's on paper and what happens on the field/pitch, they tend to conflict with each other. Lets see what happens here. Update: Whoa, correct me if I'm wrong, but Greece was just standing there and left their goal keeper hanging... 1-0, Colombia (5'). Update 2: And that's the score after the 1st half. Update 3: Oh, no! Bad news for the Italians!! Their starting goal keeper, Gianluigi Buffon, won't start in net against the English due to what's reportedly an ankle injury. How will this affect the outcome of their game later today?! Update 4: 2-0, Colombia (58'). Gutierrez was waiting at the backdoor from the Corner Kick. No one was really covering him. Buffon is old and Sirigu is good they aren't losing much probably. Just like Spain shouldn't have stuck with Casillas.
Armero is good going forward, too bad Colombia isn't being tested defensively, not convinced by oldie Yepes at the back. |
