...hmm, but that type of sacrifice can lead to a Broken and Jaded Hero since his own honor code is now kaput.
To have a code to live by, even normal people need that and even more so for those who are called 'heroes'. Heroes are born as the situation or circumstances call for it - since not every situation is the same, not every hero is the same. That's why there are so many different types.

Sacrificing the masses for a girl is NOT heroic; its being selfish. A pragmatic hero looks at statistics: One person dies so three can survive. Note that choices like this are only made when there's not other alternative.

^ You probably won't like reading 'Immortal Regis' and 'Cavalier of the Abyss' then, Zero and Era. Great art, beautiful girls...lousy MC. But he does have his reasons, even if I don't agree with them.
Spoiler for Immortal Regis/Cavalier of the Abyss:

@ Eras
Spec Ops the line: where you're being mentally punished for playing what SHOULD be generic FPS (It has awesome plot twist, indeed, instead of badass x soloing entire army of y and save the country/world/multiverse) Like I said, true hero LIKES third option. ALWAYS. @ Tempest My sister watched Cavalier, she said the hero is selfish and one hell of a dick move

Looking only at statistics doesn't make you a hero. It makes you a machine. Or maybe as a human it makes you a pencil pushing politician. You assume a litmus of morality and see which has more lives that need to be saved. If all you do is save and forget why you're even saving them then you soon cease to be a hero. You start adapting the same methods criminals and do what has to be done to prevent wrongdoings. You soon adapt a stance where absolute order and loss of freedom is true peace. Pragmatism is also a form of selfishness since you are imposing what you believe is better on others.
Pragmatism should not be taken to the extreme because of this. A hero must be idealistic. Even if there isn't an option, you must tread that path. |

@ Demino - And what happens if there is no third choice? At times, though we hate it, it does eventually come to statistics. You may be a machine, but as Dante said, "There's a special place in hell for those who stood back and watched". I'd rather tank myself morally than watch and absolve responsibility of myself because "It was out of my hands".
@ Senpai - "You're here because you wanted to be something you're not. A hero". Ouch :/

there are 3 kinds of hero.
-Those that act to become the hero. -Those that act and are recognized as a hero. -Those that respond to the cries for a hero. The most common is type 2 TOPIC SWITCH! How would you guys react when you learn that you're one of the last humans on earth, artificial at that. Your everyday life is a lie and that you are part of the system that keeps the false earth up and running? Last edited by demino_hellsin; 2013-05-15 at 08:09. |

Welll~ I'd be a dick too if I was ultimately forced to have to fight my own kid brother to the death because of the power plays in the government of the other world spilling into mine. ...just saying, there's usually a reason why people end up jaded like that. I still don't like him though.
As the 'hero' thing - too many things to consider...lol. Some heroes say they fight for justice, but true justice can not be carried out by 'innocence' or rather 'ignorance of the other side of the coin'. Not a lot of people care about 'true justice' because it means that concessions will have to be made on BOTH sides, and most don't want that. Selfishness is at the root since they want everything that they desire without giving up anything that they already have to the other side. They'd rather one person do it for them so they can live the way they want. This is my primary bone of contention with the general values held by public vs the military, and everything in between. Greed, selfishness, and self-imposed ignorance - these things will make any war last far longer than it should and all so that the ones who sacrifice the least keep that way while the ones who sacrifice more are left to fill the voids in their lives and in society.

Just had an awkward heart to heart with Momz. Despite everything, she's actually an idealist.....how surprising. Guess I'm so cynical that I can't believe it.
@ Demi - Hence I said why it should only be done when there's NO other choice available. Given the chance I'll ALWAYS do the third option. But if there's none then I might as well do what I can. @ Senpai - Maybe I'll make a small Ikaron draft. Interested?
