1.) Monster (Riveting mystery, very dark and moody, plus... Inspector Runge)

2.) Twelve Kingdoms (Deep, interesting setting, characters go through amazing changes, plus... Rakashun)

3.) Maison Ikkoku (Great cast, powerful [though drawn out] romance, great humor, plus... Yotsuya)

4.) PlanetES (Realistic portrayal of space, complex plot that is relevant to today's concerns, perfectly executed climax and resolution)

5.) Kurau: Phantom Memory (Pure emotions, strong sense of [non-romantic] love, great action, etc...)

Cowboy Bebop (Jazzy, cool and a great story)
Honey and Clover (It's in a class of it's own plus Morita is the man)
Ghost in the Shell-Stand Alone Complex (Intriging plot with awesome graphics)
Full Metal Panic-Fuumuufu (That rubgy episode is one of the funniest scene ever)
Peacock King (An old anime with surprisingly good art and got me into anime in the first place)

1) Hajime No Ippo/Fighting Spirit - words cant say how much enjoyement i got out of this series. Awesome characterization, comedy that actually made me laugh, and action that had me out of my seat and yelling out of the sheer joy of it all. I've seen a lot of action anime over the years and nothing has ever got me pumped as much as this series did (or had such enjoyable characters). This is also probably the only fighting anime that had me caring and rooting for the opponents as much as for the protagonist. Too bad a lot of people get discouraged from its focus on boxing but to anybody that hasnt seen this gem I recommend giving it a try even if you're not a sport/boxing anime fan.

2) Rurouni Kenshin (up to the Kyoto arc) - what can i say? This series was a classic to me. I pretty much marathoned the whole series back in HS. Samurais, fighting techniques, kickass characters.....where can you go wrong? Too bad they had to ruin the series after Shishio.........

3) Full Moon wa Sagashite - ok so it seemed like a "kiddy" anime when i first checked it out. However, the characters, drama, twists, emotional impact, and music eventually got to me and made it a memorable experience. It's been over a year since I watched this one and the songs still pop up in my head every now and then.

4) Ranma 1/2 - this is the anime that got me started on watching anime in the first place. So while it wasn't exactly perfect, it still left a long-lasting impression on me since it was just so fun watching the characters interact with each other (and occasionally make up the stupidest forms of martial arts )

5) Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist, Hachimitsu to Clover, Fushigi Yuugi - Each and everyone of these are special in their own way so I basically cant choose between them for #5 (btw Morita is my hero!!!)

Honorable Mentions:
kimi ga nozomu Eien - most suffocating anime. period.
Bleach/Naruto/One Piece (NON-FILLER EPISODES!!!!) - mindless fun
Mai Hime - Himelander at its best
Gundam Seed - why oh why did they have to ruin it with Destiny?????
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu! - hahahhaha
Trigun
Ouran High School/Suzumiya Haruhi(currently ongoing) - ROFLMAO
Escaflowne
Haibane Renmei
Fate Stay Night(currently ongoing)
Eureka 7

Hmm, well, I have several favourites and I can't possibly select or deselect which I like the most so in no organized order;

Rurouni Kenshin - Since my preferance for anime is mainly influenced by the "newer" animes from 2000 and onwards, this is one of the few anime I've watched from beyond that time. Nonetheless this is one of the animes which I have enjoyed alot, although the "ending" was rather unfulfilling. That is why I was happy to watch the ova, Tsuiokuhen/Reminescence, which for me contained a proper conclusion of the series.

Fullmetal Alchemist - One of the first anime I watched which really captivated and enthralled me in an introspective, philosophical way. I appreciated how it was possible to interpret and analyze the many different perspectives and convictions regarding both religion, politics and human nature. This is also why FMA revealed an anime genre which I didnt really thought existed within that media.

Mushishi, Kino no Tabi, Juuni Kokuki - Some of the anime I have recently watched. I consider these epic masterpieces which can be compared to famous litterature and motion pictures. These are unique stories which each creates an abstract and surreal world with resemblance to our own world, and they utilize this surreality to illustrate and view different aspects and perspectives of our own reality. When something is capable of doing this, I believe it can be considered a "masterpiece".
I that heard Haibane Renmei is alot like these animes, so I've put this on my "what to watch next"-list, along with Monster.

I have many other favourites in the same genres as the above-mentioned, but I basically like most genres. Some of my other favourites include; Scrapped Princess, Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, Fullmetal Panic!(all of the series), Hunter x Hunter(both the series and the ovas), Mahoraba, Mai-Hime/Otome, Onegai Teacher/Twins, Last Exile, Kanon, Cowboy Bebop, Azumanga Daioh, .Hack//sign, Ai Yori Aoshi and of course Love Hina and Naruto, which are some of the first animes I've watched.. ^_^'

Also, like everyone else, I've started watching Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu(Yes, I keep watching the immensely mesmerizing, choregraphed ED), Ouran High School Host Club and Fate/Stay Night. -_-

You'll then definitely love watching World Masterpiece Theater anime, especially those earlier works that were done by Takahata-Miyazaki duo.

I don't even have a top five - Maybe a Top 2 - Both being from Gainax.

1) Furi Kuri
2) Die Busters

But If I do have to choose an anime I "liked" I would add Tsukikage Ran.

I really do not know what the top 5 anime of all time are, but I am eager to post my favourites .

My two top favourites are Utena and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Both shows have got very good characters and a high rewatch value. They make me think, though I will never figure them out.

I cannot really decide on rank 3 to 5, but today they are:
Scrapped Princess
Gunbuster
Marimite
Could be different tomorrow...
