Usually someone starts this thread. While I generally don't show much interest in the thread, I just couldn't help it this time around after going through few new series from this season. What compelled me to start the thread is how lacking this season is for me thus far in terms of something I could say, "oh yeah... that's a good show!"

2013 has been an incredible year for me for it brought me some very good show in every season. Series like Psycho Pass, Shingeki no Kyojin, Shin Sekai no Yori, Zetsuen no Tempest that were just incredible. Then there are good shows and sequels like Suisei no Garganita, Chihaiyafuru 2, Hataraku Mao Sama, Love Lab, Yozakura Quartet: Hana no Uta, Railgun S, Monogatari Second Series. And then there were series that I could watch simply for the fun factor like Non Non Biyori, Tamayura More Aggressive, Maoyuu Maou Yuusha, Date A Live, Outbreak Company, Gin no Saji, Free, Kyoukai no Kanata, Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san, Gakuen Love Comedy, Vivid Red Operation, Robotics;Notes, GJ-bu, Yuyushiki, Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai Next, Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou, and etc...

That's a large number of shows I've mentioned, but there is a pattern. I've found more than a few in each season starting from the winter 2012-13 season. I've watched 11 different new show thus far from Winter 2013-14 series and exactly two I will continue to watch for the fun factor: Witchcraft Works and No-Rin.

The rest are just,.... oh my gosh... they are just not good for so many reasons. The last couple of years (may be even be 3 years) has seen an incredible stretch of anime production where every season was packed with series that appealed to wider audience. Considering how uninteresting of start this has been for me, is my winter of discontent begin with 2014 as far as lack of good anime watching goes?

So what is your thoughts, first impression, criticism, likes and dislikes from 2013-14 Winter season shows that have aired thus far? Hopefully it is better than mine, and then you will go on to tell me with compelling argument that I'm imagining things.

There are very few series I can get excited about to the point of eagerly anticipating them every week.

At best at the moment I have four, and one of them (Asakura) is a carryover - the other three are Mikakunin, Inari Konkon and Saki Zenkoku.

The eps of Pilot's Love Song have been solid and wholesome, to be sure, and it is possible the series could enter the category of eager anticipation for me, but the jury is still out on that one.

Yet even here the series I have been watching that fall into the category of eager anticipation fall into the area of calm eager anticipation - that is, they are not like Gingitsune was. (Still, to be fair series like that are rare.)

The main problem is the gulf between the above mentioned five and the rest of the season. There are other series I have tentatively committed to follow or am still on the fence about, but the quality of "nutrition" in them is surprisingly bland. There are plenty that could be described as "Hmm. Well, that wasn't so bad." but which are eminently forgettable. I am not even including the other 70% of series that were just dropped like a hot potato....

Yes, every season has the elements in general, but it feels as if the pendulum of reference from last season to this season swung so far from each other that it approaches the realm of the odd. You know? Almost like looking around and asking "Wha? What happened? Is this for real? Did I miss something somewhere?"

Anyway. here is my list:

The A List series are those I eagerly and actively look forward to every week.

I am actually very sceptical about a lot of the series. For some reason something strange happened: I don't want to watch some of the series until they are completed. I never did that with anime until now, so this is really odd. The only serieses I follow episode per episode right now are Toaru Hikuushi e no Koiuta, Mahou Sensou and Witchcraft Works (though something is annoying me about this series, but I don't know what, most likely it is the MC again...).

And from the longer running ones: One Piece and Kingdom

I am not sure yet, which series I will watch through after this cour finishes.

I won't be talking about carryovers this time. What I'm still watching, for reference: Kill la Kill, Hunter X Hunter, Nagi no Asukara, Golden Time, Samurai Flamenco (barely), Magi.

My favourites this season are:

Nobunaga - The Fool: Kawamori at his best (or worst, depending on your point of view). Of pomp and silliness. You either like it, or you don't. I do.

Hozuki no Reitetsu: Dead pan and utterly random humour. My kind.

Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha: Adorable romance comedy with charming foxes.

Also very good:

Mikakunin de Shinkoukei: Another lovable romance comedy. Characters are likable and interesting, down to the support cast.

Sekai Seifuku Byouraku no Svezda: A collection of oddballs try for world domination. Stylish and silly, the way I like it.

Nisekoi: It's the style you expect from shaft. It's an extremely conventional love comedy. Somehow those work well together to create something solidly entertaining. My favourite shaft show since Denpa Onna, so far.

Tonari no Seki kun: This show is made for the five-minutes format.

Pupipo: Another fun five-minutes show; I wish it had full length, though. It's utterly charming.

Entertaining:

Nobunagun: I mostly like the visuals. Characters are okay. Plot doesn't get in the way either.
Saki 2: If you want to watch that, you're watching it already. My draw? Huge cast full of quirky characters done well.

Noragami: Surprisingly, I find myself interested in where this show goes. I like the characters, too, and they expand the cast at just the right pace. Solid entry in the shounen fighter genre.

Saikin, Imouto...: Good god, did I ever watch a schizo series? This one is very good, actually, in portraying the imouto's emotions, and it has a likable cast. But the concept is just too much reliant on ecchi-scenes, and those are very graphic and rely on you finding embarrassment and harrassment funny. I have a love/hate relationship with that one (although I don't exactly love it, nor do I really hate it: but the heights and depths are very far apart - I've never seen anything like this).

D-Frag: I like some of the characters, and the humour works on me sometimes (and is never annoying).
These pass the time, but if they got cancelled I wouldn't miss them:

Witchcraft Works: I like the robot bunny army. Sometimes some kind of absurd charm shines through. Sometimes.

No-Rin: Occasionally funny, often annoying.

Toaru Hikuushi e no Koi Uta: The sort of drama that doesn't really work on me, but it's pretty good and has nice elements. For example, I like how brother and sister quarrel who's the older one (has special significance since the boy is adopted; it's a way of bonding).

Pupa: I like what's there, but it isn't much. This show suffers the most from any I've ever watched from the five-minutes format. Pity, because what's there is actually good.

Robot Girls Z: Moderately funny.

Candidates for dropping/Shows I only watch for the odd moment of brilliance:

Wake-Up, Girls!: It's neither one of those moderately fun, idealised shows, nor does it appear to be an honest look at the business. It's some strange hybrid whose appeal is... uncertain.

Sakura Trick: This one has a slight chance to get promoted, because the supporting cast shows promise. The main couple, though, is so generic that you feel they didn't need put effort in the characters as long as they kiss.

Space Dandy: For a show about an alien hunter, this is annoyingly anthropocentric. The humour mostly doesn't work on me. But, oh, when it does, it's wonderful. Unfortunately, when it doesn't it's equally annyoing.

Mahou Sensou: Utterly generic and not my genre. It must have something, or I wouldn't still be watching. What that something is? I can't tell.

Wizard Barristers: Silly, and not in a good way.

Z/X Ignition: bland.

The list of shows I'm personally following this season isn't set in stone yet, but I have about six new shows and three carry overs. That's a decent number. Perhaps more importantly however there's two new shows I'm quite into: Nobunaga: The Fool and The Pilot's Love Song (To Aru Hikuushi e no Kouita).

Nobunaga: The Fool has some issues, but I find myself eagerly wanting more. Besides, its medieval sci-fi mecha with re-incarnations of Oda Nobunaga, Jeanne D'Arc, and Leonardo da Vinci as main characters. That's gotta count for something, right?

The Pilot's Love Song is set in the same world as the little known 2011 Mad House movie The Princess and the Pilot, which is my favorite anime movie. I was somewhat disappointed with the start of the new series but its been gaining.

Well, even though i started this season watching 11 series, by now I'm down to 7, and of those 7, only 4 have me waiting for it each week: Mikakunin de Shinkoukei, Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha, Nisekoi, and Gin No Saji.
Mainly, Mikakunin has me intrigued by it's characters and their interactions, we're only 2 chapters in, and i often find myself speculating over the rute that series will follow.
And in a close second, comes Gin No Saji, there's just some charm to watching a city mouse try (and for the most part, succeed) to adjust to the country life.
The others: Golden Time, SYD and Chuuni-2, i watch them, but without much compromise.
Overall, I'd say that this winter season I've found some anime worth waatching, but, for the most part, it's filled with either forgettable shows, or outright garbage (im looking at you both, Sakin Imouto and SUPER SONICO...)

The Best

Mikakunin de Shinkoukei - Everything works for me. Maybe I'm getting used to overly cuteness. It seems to be nothing more than the generic slice of life but has the possibility to be more.

Toaru Hikuushi e no Koi Uta - The character dynamic works well. I can't help but feel some melancholic atmosphere around the setting.

Promising

Sekai Seifuku Byouraku no Svezda: - I'm still not sure about this show but I'm entertained enough.

Tonari no Seki kun: - Sometimes this show is hit and miss for me but when it hits, it's out of the park.

Witchcraft Works: - I'm watching it because the main staff is basically the same as Joshiraku. While it's not got to the point it's hilarious, still I find it very cute.

Pupipo: - This is the show I'm rather resonating with. For a very short screentime, it is very charming.

Entertaining

Noragami: - Honestly, I'm watching this show because of two main seiyuu that I like. It's not bad and the OST is pretty memorable too.

Silver Spoon 2: - It is good but I don't really too many opinions on this one. I sometimes find Hachiken tad annoying when he comes across as too much of busybody. I find minor characters more endearing than Hachiken himself.

Super Sonico the Animation: - Harmless and fluff slice of life where I also like the minor character better than Sonico like her manager. Still there are about 10 more episodes whether it will just meander along or go somewhere.

Currently, I'm downloading all of the animes this season though they're all encoded (mostly for my friends). Most of them didn't really catch my attention however and I find myself not really looking forward to, well, nearly anything. Of course, this is mostly since I have only watched the first episodes, but I don't find myself with the need to rush the downloads and immediately watch them. There are those that I am interested in however, such as:

Nobunagun: Seems to be pretty cool so far, other than that old Nobunaga was pretty badass.... not much to say in terms of story so far though.

Mikakunin de Shinkoukei: Reminds me of Sakurasou, premise, character amd dynamics was interesting but the drama seeds given in the beginning left me wary.

Hamatora: Episode one was okay... kind reminds me of K for some reason.

Wizard Barristers: Fell in love with the action scenes at the beginning and especially the premise of Phoenix Wright x Darker Than Black. Instant-fav.

Mahou Sensou: I am extremely interested in how bad this could get.

I'm currently mostly going for comedy and action; from the current line up I don't feel any major need to follow anything at all. In fact, I haven't watched most of the stuff I have downloaded, especially the second episodes. So mostly: Interesting premise, some nice execution, but I am not expecting anything that makes me fell heads over heel at all. I'll update soon after I've watched the second ep and not on phone.

So far, I'm highly enjoying:
- Mikakunin de Shinkokei – Every character so far is very interesting and Mashiro is a little bundle of fun
- Sakura Trick – Finally, a proper yuri show that's both fun and has attractive girls
- Seitokai Yakuindomo* – Just like S1, it's sex jokes and innuendo galore, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
- Nisekoi – Because a) it's Shaft, and b) it's very funny
- Noragami – Very funny, and I'm interested to see whether Hiyori will ever return to normal (probably not, but one can hope)
- Pupipo! – For a short show, this has a lot of things going very well for it.
- Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren – Definitely as good as the first season, and the new girl will probably prove to be a very interesting character
- Tonari no Seki-kun – Probably the best of the short shows this season. it doesn't waste any time and gets right to the point
- Strange+ – Another hilarious short
- World Conquest Zvezda Plot – A loli who leads a secret organization bent on conquering the world. How is that not awesome?

Shows that have potential:
- Hoozuki no Reitetsu – This show is seriously fun. I liked the characters we've seen so far, and Hoozuki is a badass
- Saki Zenkoku-hen – Epic mahjong with every character we've grown to love since season 1. They'd have to fuck up real bad for this not to become good.
- Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha. – This show shows a lot of potential. Inari messing up with her new-found ability is sure to provide a lot of funny, perhaps even embarrassing situations.
- No-Rin — If it were only to see how our farmer otaku deals with having his idol living in the same town as him. Plus, most comedies with Yukari Tamura in it have been enjoyable so far.

The only shows I've seen that have yet to truly impress me are Witch Craft Works (the ED and the battle scenes are pretty much the only thing I enjoy. I don't really care much for the main guy and the girl), Mahou Sensou (the characters don't really do me much, art/animation isn't exactly great and some things seem a bit inconsistent, not to mention seriously clichéd) and Onee-chan ga Kita! (I expected it to be a lot funnier. But, because it's a short, I'll probably keep watching).

I have put Pupa! and Recently, My Sister is Unusual on hold due to the annoying censorship and will watch them once the Blu-rays are out and subbed (and also because the former is way too short).

Carry-overs: Kill la Kill (still as awesome as before the break), Nagi no Asukara (which is getting better and better), Strike the Blood (which I have yet to watch past episode 12, but will pick it up again after the end of each arc) and Golden Time (which I'm close to dropping, because I can't stand Kouko for much longer).

This season is kinda lame. Some acceptable at best shows, a bunch of unremarkably bad shows and only couple of really good or awful shows.

Good shows I actually care about:

Space Dandy: humour, attitude, and really good visuals, with silly science faction on top. Not only is it good, but it's totally my kind of show. Only op and ed this season I even remember.

Shows that are good enough:

Noragami: it's fun, action looks good, nice characters. Nothing much to say besides that.

Nobunagun: it (I hope) will have action, which is enough for me this season. And I like the mc.

Hoozuki no Reitetsu: the first episode was really fun, even if a few went completely over me.

Shows I only watch because I have more time than stuff to do:

Nobunaga the Fool: I was kinda hyped for this, but between the nothing special first ep, and a second one that was half nothing half exposition and hundred percent boring, the hype is dead.

Engaged to the Unknown: meh. Maybe it'll manage tomake something out of itself.

Buddy Complex:I'll kinda watch anything that's Sunrise and mechas, so...

Gin no Saji S2: I never quite got why everyone loves this. But it's good enough to keep with it.

Stuff I dropped, might keep up with it:

Nisekoi: was gonna watch this, but no. Shaft can be as gaudy as they want with the visuals, everything else is kinda lame.

Witchcraft Works: maybe yes, maybe not. I guess I'll keep up with it while I feel like it.

Pilot's love song: Really, I dont' care about this, but it seems more interesting than most other options. At least until I get bored of it being 90% school hijinks. Maybe the mc will learn revenge is bad or something and I'll get angry at the show.

Pupa: might be good once the BD are out, if someone edits it into a single episode OVA without censorship and credits. Meanwhile, it isn't.

So bad it makes my chest hurt, so I'll watch them:

Imocho: A teenage girl's life is in the road to ruin because of a ghost fixated with incest and sexual harassment. And it's played as a silly romantic comedy. Priceless.

Chuu2-koi: watching the first season was close to unbearable, a despairing experience. At this point I have simply accepted I'll never enjoy any Kyoani show beside FMP. So I'll probably watch most f their stuff.

The best new show of the season is Silver Spoon 2, which happens to be a sequel.

Other than that the only other show I really liked was Noragami too bad its streaming on Funimation and I am a week behind.

So needless to say for me this is a weak season. But I did have a lot of carryovers from the fall so its okay.

Although I do still need to check out Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha.

This season boils down to two shows for me: Space Dandy and Silver Spoon. Other than that it is quite abysmal. Winter seasons tend to be really bad though so I'm not too concerned yet.

All I can say is thank you for the carry over shows. Ace of Diamond, Pedal, Hunter x Hunter, Nagi no Asakura. Without them this winter would be pretty hard to keep interested in anime.

Solid shows:
Sekai Seifuku: Bouryaku no Zvezda - By far the most impressive show of the new season. Excellent production values and sound quality. Incredible character designs and fairly good voice acting. The direction and atmosphere of the first 2 episodes are amazing. It truly exemplifies the 'show, don't tell' approach of storytelling and world building that I'm a big supporter of. The topic matter and characters are quite silly but the way it's presented just works. The humor is fairly funny and a lot of the jokes are interesting original takes on fairly overdone tropes.

Space Dandy: The show with the best (and most insane) animation this season. Humor is hit or miss depending on your tastes (a lot of the jokes are definitely more geared toward western humor). The show is worth watching just to see the animation alone, but it's also incredibly funny for me too.

Tonari no Seki-kun: Incredibly original and hilarious short.

Shows that have a lot of potential:
Buddy Complex: The first episode would be a standard Gundam hijack opener if not for the time travel plot device. The designs are all a bit uninspired (pretty much all copies of various Gundam characters and mechs). However, the mecha battles themselves are incredibly well directed and animated. The mechs also dog fight like jets, which is a style that we don't see very often in mech battles. Although all the characters and situations are fairly cliche, the development has been sprinkled with bits of originality and subversion. The time travelling plot line looks like will be a focus too. Definitely a series that's getting better each episode by focusing on its strengths.

Wizard Barristers: The show with the 2nd or 3rd best animation this season with some 'sakuga' scenes. The courtroom scenes are a bit too silly but I kind of expected Ace Attorney level of shenanigans so it doesn't bother me too much. As long as the animation quality doesn't drop and they keep on delivering more 'sakuga' animation I'll keep following it.

Wake Up, Girls!: This show is...different. It's the most talked about show in 2chan for a reason. The hand drawn dance animations are a plus (I really didn't like the CG dances in Love Live!) and I'm looking forward to the hardships the girls will face. Yamakan being attached to this series will just make it a rollercoaster (for better or worse).

Toaru Hikuushi e no Koiuta: Reminds me of Last Exile, which is enough of by itself, though the animation quality is really terrible. The characters started out really bland but they're getting more interesting. I also spoiled myself on some of the novel spoilers and it's actually made me more curious as to how certain character interactions will turn out.

Shows that I'll watch as long as they stay somewhat entertaining:
Sakura Trick: Somewhat shocking first episode due to all the kissing which I did not expect. The 2nd episode wasn't nearly as funny though. If it doesn't return to at least the first episode's level of humor I'll probably drop this.

No-rin: Basically Baka Test at an agricultural school. The female lead's personality also turned out to be kind of a surprise, and is a good foil for the stupidity of the rest of the cast. The humor is 'stupid funny'.

Strange+: Another show that's 'stupid funny', but also kind of insane. Not a bad way to spend 3 minutes each week as long as the show keeps it up.

Shows that are on the edge of the cutting block:
Nisekoi: Shaft is doing a really good job making the source material look a LOT better than it is. I think they need to animate some of the funnier chapters to keep my interest though, as I know the story and characters are going nowhere.

Hamatora: It's the only show I'm watching on Tuesdays, so it has a lot of leeway. It hasn't been too exciting and the plot developments aren't that interesting. The biggest weakness is that the two main leads are incredibly bland.

D-Frag: The first 2 episodes didn't make that much of an impact on me. It had some funny moments but when it's not funny it just kind of drags, especially without any kind of interesting underlying plot. I'm also watching 3 other shows on Monday that I find far more interesting so it's highly likely I'll just fall behind on this show and then eventually drop it.

Nobunagaun: It had some interesting bits here and there so far, but hasn't made much of an impression past the initial surprises. The actions scenes aren't particularly great either. It's a Sunday show though, so I'll only drop it if I get bored with it.

Nobunaga the Fool: Not a big fan of Kawamori's work. I have alot of problems with the show but some of the ridiculous developments keep me somewhat interested in seeing what happens next. Again, a Sunday show so I'm not too picky as I have a lot of free time on the weekends.

Onee-chan ga Kita: It's hard to argue with a 3 minute show, but it's not particularly interesting either aside from the cuteness.

Mahou Sensou: Watching just to see how bad it'll turn out to be.

I'm with you, Monir - I think it's the worst and most uninspired and formulaic season since I've been watching anime. There's some good stuff - Hoozuki, Space Dandy, Noragami, Toaru and Inari Konkon are about the best so far. But none of those looks like a great series, and for there to only be that many I'd count as "good" is a depressing development.

I don't know. I thought last Winter was equally uninspired and formulaic.

However if we add and compare sequels and crossovers, then yeah, this season has it worse.

People must have short memories because there were MANY seasons during the 2008-2010 stretch (2009 is the worst year of anime I've seen since I started following anime regularly every season) that were truly awful. Plus, winter seasons are historically pretty freaking terrible. Last winter we were lucky to even have Chihayafuru S2.

I don't think the season is that bad, to be honest. I'm seeing a lot of "hey, this is pretty good" among the community here, for a wide range of shows that have premiered. There's a nice variety in themes and genres, even if most of it isn't really risk taking. And there's a number of quality carryovers from last season to keep even the stingiest viewer busy.

Will it be a memorable season? Probably not. But most winter seasons rarely are.

Personally I think the best surprise of the season came in the form of Sekai Seifuku Byouraku no Svezda. It has a solid budget, great acting, a unique and wacky premise, fun characters, and good writing.

Witchcraft Works is a solid adaptation. Better than I expected, given that it could have been a throwaway for the winter season. But it's surprisingly faithful to the source material and you can tell the studio has worked hard to adapt it the best they can.

Noragami is also a nice surprise. I hadn't heard of it, even though I read a lot of manga. Having caught up on what's translated, and having seen the anime, it's surprisingly solid and a great watch.

Nobunagun could go either way, but at least it's not afraid to be different.

I'm still unsure about Hamatora or Wizard Barristers, but so far they aren't bad either.

And of course there is more, like Space Dandy, Inari Kon Kon no Iroha, and even Buddy Complex isn't too bad (if a bit generic so far).

So even though I was "meh" about the start of the season, I've found some good stuff to watch. If I had one disappointment, it's been Pupa. What a waste of potential.
