They're high level clearers. There are still 26 bosses to go.

Speaking of which, that extortion scene was the worst thing I've ever seen. It's always the lowbies begging for money/items but here we see people from a huge guild bullying the people who have settled for the lowest level cap life. What do they hope to get from people who can farm, say, boars for 8 cor each when the soldiers themselves can probably hunt stuff 20 levels higher and get 1k per kill?
- They're weak cowards too.
- It's not about getting stuff. It's about taking it from people.

There are easier, faster ways to get money than harassing kids who never set foot outside Starting City. But it takes the guts to go out in the fields and fight boars or something.

Why won't they....

>sell quality weapons and armor (with their logo in it)
>be paid as mercenaries that will assist weak ones to become stronger
>held tournaments that do bets.

There many ways to earn really.. they just lack the initiative...

Separate beds?? What is that crap?

Also, this is a bit of speculation from an Anime Only viewer. At the beginning of the episode, Asuna told Kirito that she would find him again in the real world.

I don't think one of them is going back.

For the reasons I've told you. They're weak cowards (so they won't do dangerous stuff), and they want to take, not earn. It's not about the Col amount. It's about exerting power.

What, you think one of them is some kind of NPC with no real body?

Just a bit of clarification for those of us who are insufferably thick, I think one of them is going to die.

From what I gather the Front is big since they are a zerg guild, might just be a few bad eggs.

Doesn't matter if it is in game or real life you always get ijits who like to hide behind the bigger kid whilst putting the boot in. Kinda like the lawyers who threaten people with letters of give them xxx monies or they will take you to court for downloading porn.

But from Kirito's warning to Asuna about taking their gear since it is Front territory, I guess their overall rep is bad.

Nice that the romance is already established this far and its only episode 11 out of 25.

Normally it takes nearly the whole series.

Just so you know, SilverSyko, you're not alone.

There's times when I think that SAO's whole premise is the writer's way of telling a straight-up Fantasy-story with a classic Fantasy setting while still technically keeping the story in Japan. Generally, this doesn't bother me as long as what is presented on screen could conceivably fit in a VR MMO as well.

But I think that this episode really stretches things there.

For me, it's not so much that this army is extorting people for money (the fact they call it "taxes" though is telling to me - It really does make me think of a classic Fantasy story of a Robin Hood-esque hero protecting average townsfolk from harsh medieval tax collectors, and I think that's intentional on the writer's part).

No, for me it's... what the hell are all these three pre-teen kids (that's what they looked like to me) doing in a VR MMO anyway?!

Three pre-teen kids and their Sensei. And they're clearly not just NPCs, or there'd be no point in the army trying to extort them.

Yui I'm cool with. Yui presents an intriguing mystery while adding a nice family dynamic to Asuna and Kirito (I don't think that it's any coincidence that Yui's character design is one that lends itself to being the biological daughter of both Asuna and Kirito - you see this most clearly with her hair length and color).

But we're to believe that some pre-teen kids somehow picked up a heavily anticipated VR MMO on launch day, started playing it, and have managed to survive for two years in it? Man, that's a lot to swallow.

Those complaints being made, I really liked the romance bits. I liked the softer, slower-paced feel to it. My biggest general complaint when it comes to SAO is how rushed it often seems to me, so letting things breath a bit was nice to see for a change.

And while the first town situation raised some eyebrows for me, I did love how Asuna resolved it. That was genuinely cool.

Considering there's a little girl wandering (potentially for a while, urban stories don't pop up overnight) around without weapons, and people fishing without weapons, and Kirito x Asuna came here for their honeymoon, it could be one of those horribly boring and lame MMO zones without many monsters. It happens.

Yup! Keep in mind, someone was doing Sleep PK... and the easiest spot to do that would be in the starter town. Get a few thousand people in one spot who can't afford rooms / food / are half crazed with despair and you'll find people to kill. So there could be perfectly logical reasons they're there... but after two years of 'protecting' these lowlifes I'm sure the motives aren't very pure anymore.

Eve Online's Vile Rat, Sean Smith... a person who enjoyed diplomacy so much that after hanging up his hat working in an embassy doing diplomat stuff, that he logged into a video game and did more of it after hours. In fact, did it often enough he was well known as one of the game's more powerful / influential diplomats, was also a player-elected official on the companies board of advisories council. There have been some pretty extensive memorial services for his character in-game. Heck, there's been some talk from CCP, the game's creator about making a permanent addition to the game in his memory. But that's terribly off-topic.

So there's time to explain it.
There are certainly some 'game mechanic' elements the show hasn't touched upon. Someone has to be holding all those PK'ers prison in a jail, and we've been shown that it isn't going to be the game's 'system'.

Considering a few things from this ep, and the prior:

A) The 'army' apparently isn't really named the Army, likely a player nickname? They call themselves the 'Liberation Front' or simply 'Front'. It certainly can't be two separate groups with exactly the same armor.

It's a 'town' of 2,000 people, 30% of the total population. We don't know how much a 'room' in the starter town costs, but you probably can't afford a permanent roof over your head without doing something for money. Maybe the tax is used to pay for rooms for all those people to sleep in? We really don't know.

We're assuming they are low-life scum because they're trying to get kids (one of whom is a little girl) to strip out of their clothes in the name of taxes, but who really knows their deal. It's probably fairly foul, but might have started with the best of intentions. Heck, there are real world armies in 3rd world countries that do worse.

They are in the starter town... so it's not like they're brash and ballsy adventurer's risking their lives on the middle floors. Likely they've got a few levels, and farm the boars outside town for enough money to keep a roof over their head. And out of 10,000 people, at least a few of them will be kids. Those kids are going to be in for a world of pain / despair, but I don't think it's so surprising. Lots of parents are pretty shirty about how they raise their kids, sadly.

I know enough parents who have kids that play MMO's with them (in a highly controlled way), but having your under-aged children join that new awesome-sauce VR MMO on day one with you? doesn't sound too shocking.

waaah~ long post is long...

This honeymoon episode was ok, and I liked the addition of Yui. I was just kind of hoping for a wedding episode though. Had even put clothes on just for the occasion. And even though I had kept them on throughout, I could imagine that around two thousand people somewhere had taken their clothes off just for Yui. All for the wrong reasons too. And I say to those people, throwing your clothes at the screen will not give Yui +armor.

It's part of their narrative that they - and only they - have nobly taken the responsibility of fighting for the rest of the population. And no, the fact they haven't fought a floor boss or been active at the frontline for 50 levels hasn't registered.

They probably "borrowed" it from older relatives who were busy with something else during launch day.

As for surviving, it's easy - they just never left the town.

Yeah, they're the Aincrad Liberation Front. Nicknamed the army because of their numbers and because that's the image they're going for, as opposed to more casual guilds like Klein's or the Black Cats.

I think it's supposed to pay for the Army's expense. They're not much into charity, or they wouldn't target children.

Just to clarify, most MMO's have some kind of upkeep to support prolonged adventuring. In most games, it's gear maintenance. Consumables are a close second after that. Considering the fact that the army does not seem to have any players who truly understand the game, gear maintenance and consumable costs should be running high.

They stick to the lower levels, though. For the most part, they don't need high level stuff. Scilica's hand me downs would be more than enough.
