I think the Kuesu that died was a special shikigami. We saw that creepy seer kid casting a spell on what appeared to be a sleeping Kuesu, then talk to someone behind him who seemed a lot like Kuesu. And we already know that the seer kid is good with shikigami (he made a one that blew up shuten doji)

Recent chapters just brought new information, I am really doubting that Kuesu died now. It got to be something about that curse, it said something that the user will be in deep trouble if they over extend their powers.
