I don't think that Naru's nameplate was missing for fear of sensei discovering his real name. Naru wasn't expecting sensei to come to the hospital. Remember, he was surprised when she showed up with Kansei. I think Naru's nameplate was missing because he didn't want Mai and the others to learn his real name. In other words, I don't think it's just because Naru is trying to be appear mysterious. I think he's trying to hide the fact that Kazuya isn't his real name.

It might be because I have the antcipation of watching the subs for volume three but that is where my mind keeps coming up with questions. But thinking about how Naru bent the spoon, I went back to volume one where he opens up the room that had Mai and John signatures all over them. I could be making something up but he toor that wood off really quite easily, do you think he could have use some of that pk power there?

I agree that there is no "power demonstration" in that scene from Naru's part. The boards may have been quite thin if John and Mai managed to easily nail them down.

About the nameplate, the curse (and regarding the earlier huge spoilers),

I assume it lacks a name on it because Naru don't want Mai-tachi to know he uses an alias. Hospital records might contain his real identity, I guess.

I agree with LKK about his curse theory. Certainly, the hitogata could have an information clearly identifying Naru despite not being his (real) name, and that's why it worked.

Moreover, Naru isn't very imaginative, picking Shibuya as his last *fake* name, which is the district's name where his office is located.

I assume most of my previous ideas were wrong. Such a shame i'm that bad at guessing ^^;
I need to re-read this entire thread to "process" all these new data and build some new unsound hypothesis. yay !

Reread vol 2 today (while waiting for Baku to dl) and I found something funny but not very relevant to anything current discussion we've had. Mostl this just goes back to LKK's thing about Naru letting people come to their own conclusions tho he doesnt out right lie at all. Case in point...

This is after theyve reunited Tomiko with her mother.

Monk-san "Im impressed that you made that hitogata, is that why you had to leave for while?"

Naru "Right. And I needed to learn more about her past life."

Naru never out right says that he made the hitogata just that he needed information but from that they all assumed he was an Onmyouji Course we find out later

From the various discussion posts, I think we're all in agreement that Kazuya Shibuya is not Naru's real name.

Ive never really tied the fact that Shibuya isnt his real name to the fact that he doesnt lie, I more took it as this is who he is now as the pres of the SPR. Plus no one has out right asked him if Shibuya is his real name so why would he say any different. (ya'll follow?) When someone is introduced to you you assume thats there real name. And remember Mai automatically assumed Naru was a nick name that he had already, never asked how he got it. (gah I want to know the significance of that)
If the lack of name on the door is soley to not have ppl learn his real name then I guess Naru can lie just this once but I tie dont this in with that at all.

I got vol 6 and its awesome! Basically the vol is about the crew going to a haunted mansion to find out why people have been disappearing.
This is a long post!

Spoiler for major things we find out in vol 6:

1-Mori Madoka-Naru's sensei!! Omg I love her, she taught Naru how to Ghost Hunt and still treats him like a kid! I was laughing in the first chapt just based on her interaction with Naru and Lin. One thing I did find weird was that when she asks Lin if Naru is in, she calls him Naru. I found this odd since she obviously doesnt know Mai or the nick name (it always felt odd to me that Lin called him Naru too but anways)
2- Yasuhara-san is back. Since the case they are working on is attracting alot of media attention, Naru has Yasuhara pretend to be the prez of SPR will Naru is just an investigator.
3- Narumi Kazuo - this floored me the most, its the name Naru gives when everyone is introduced in the mansion. Now since we're all in the boat that Shibuya isnt his real name, Im thinking this either is his real name or atleast very close to it. I think the Narumi part is right tho. Since it would make sense about Mai orginally calling him Naru-chan and him asking where she'd heard it and that Madoka and Lin call him that.
4- Mai's an orphan - honestly this didnt surprise me that much since its almost cliche in alot of anime. But what I was watching for was everyone's reactions. In the panel that shows everyone's reaction Naru isnt shown. A few panels later when Mai is explaining her situation and how working at SPR pays so well Naru is shown from the back. More then likely Naru already knew Mai's situation when he hired her, since back on vol 1 he asks if her school has any problems with her getting a part time job but doesnt ask about her parents. Also Monk-san's reaction to it is kawaii ^_^
5- Lin - we find out Lin is chinese and really hates the japanese, which throws Mai for a loop. Its a great scene with her almost telling him off. Me typing a review would not do it justice, sorry guys Explains why Lin is the way he is toward Mai but I think they made progress Makes me really wonder what Naru is then since most of us also believe he's not japanese.
6- Oliver Davis - yes he finally makes an appreance and Monk-san is all happy. But he doesnt do anything which really makes you wonder.

Im gonna have to go back and read the later chapts that involve the house itself again since there is alot of informarion. There's something about a painting and money which totally went over my head Naru's whole take on this case is also interesting. Mai notices a few times that he's being over cautious and nervous. He's also drawn more somber in alot of scenes. Also and maybe its cuz Madoka is pushing his buttons but he seems a bit more sarcastic then normal. Really makes me want to know whats gonna happen in vol 7 but I have to wait til march T_T

Wow, I just usually read my manga and never really notice much. I had to grab my volume six and read it again while going over what you wrote.

number 6 is worse than number 4 when it comes to bad endings, which I will curse untill book 7 comes out in three months.

this manga had alot of information in it. we learned little about mai and naru, but a few things bugged me. whenever the team seemed to talk about the other teams and about dr. davis, did anyone notice that naru usually left. I had to read over the book again and count heads in a couple of places but he usually was not there, and then he would come back and yell at everybody for no working.
Learning Lin was chinese and hates the japenese was interesting, and makes me wonder what connection he has to naru, because if I hated living in a country it would takes some pretty strong connection with someone to make me live there and help them out. what do you guys think about this note?

I agree that naru seemed sober in this manga, It was actually a little creepy to me not seeing him in normal bossy self, I kind-of missed it. Part of it might be that we don't see as much of him as we have in the past, we haven't even seen dream naru yet, although mai has had several dreams.

I have more but I have already made this long enough and we also have 3 months to pick this book apart before the next one comes out I wish Del Rey would hurry.

It might just be happening to her spirit or whatever they call it when she leaves her body and then dream naru is going to break in and save the day, but who knows

this mystery has my mind going blank, although as I think back at the different dreams mai has had so far, like the one with all the blood in the bathtub, and ayako woke her up. It seemed like she was really there but she was sleeping. So becuase of that I am leaning more towards dream but if her dream self gets hurt, will she get hurt back in the waking world? Which leads me to an irritation why doesn't mai tell the others about her dreams, especially when ayako gets freaked out and wakes you up out of one? Do you think she forgets them as soon as she wakes up?

I know my mind is blank as well and I have no clue why she's not telling anyone about the dreams. I dont think she forgets them since after Ayako wakes her up she thinks to herself about having the most horrible dream. The 2nd dream happens and then they discover that the assistant has vanished so that probably made her forget the current dream which also wasnt as bad as the one with the bath tub.

About what you said earlier about people disappearing after Mai has a dream, it seems more like Suzuki vanishes after the seance even tho Mai does have the bath tub dream a bit earlier. Mai also doesnt mention the smell of blood right away either, she only does that after either Ayako or Masako says they noticed it too.

What really confuses me about the last scene is (atleast to me) it seems like two people are talking. Mai is talking in her head saying things like "But I cant seem to wake up" "I cant stay conscious" but then in the black boxes of the manga it sounds like someone else is talking, kinda like this....
Box: "Dont"
Mai in her head: "This room is terrifying"
Box: "I dont want to go"
Mai in her head: "Its scary"
Box: "If I go"

And the stuff written in the black boxes is also from the beginning so either its forshadowing what is happening to Mai/people who are vanishing or its someone else. The box text is really throwing me off for some reason. I know GH sometimes makes it hard to determine who is actually talking

Spoiler for back about your thoughts on Lin:

Sorry I didnt address this right away but you made a comment about why would Lin stay in Japan if he doesnt like the Japanese and his ties to Naru.
Its been speculated in this thread that Lin is Naru's guardian (as well as assistant) so he might not have a choice since he seems to have to do whatever Naru tells him to do. Dont know what the exchange is on Lin's part but something must have made him decide to stay in Japan besides Naru. Make you really wonder how Naru got the SPR to begin with, like the other team members where discussing

Sorry your right about that, i confused it with the second disappearance, where she has that dream where she tries to tell someone not to go that way and then wakes up to find someone else has vanished. I thought that it happened in each disappearance. the last scene is confusing I read it a couple of times and didn't know what to make of it. In some cases it seems to flow and could come from mai, but sometimes it sounds as if mai and some else (the person who she is dreaming about, if that is the case) could be talking. but who knows? there is almost to many ways this could be looked at. It might even be a translation error although I have heard that Del Rey has done a good job with the translations. maybe somebody else might have a view on this.
I have wondered many times about Lin and Naru's connection to each other. your theory on guardian makes sense, There is that hint in volume 3 that they might live together (even though the way naru said it is alittle fishy) Sometimes I almost think uncle or some other family member but that is just my imagination. There is some piece of the puzzle that is missing here, that I wish would be found.

I didn't realise at first but you seem to be on right track about her lastest dream. She might actually be experiencing in her dream what happen to someone else, it would explain how she got into that kimono from her pajamas. Also, in that one scence in her dream where they show a fire and a glass almost empty, I think that the picture hanging above the fire was probably the one they found in the secret room, noticed how you can't make it out. None of this has anything to do with the huge spoilers I mentioned, which didn't reveal much expect Madoka and her asking them on a case (persumably this one).

I was thinking that maybe it happened to either the girl who just disappeared or to a girl in the past, after all back then a girl of poor status could easily go missing with no mention in the papers or anything. I think perhaps the guy was some evil cultist and using the blood for something. Of course, this begs the question how many people have really died in that mansion. Also on page 130 and 129 the words in the background seem odd, especially "it's unfortunate" on page 130.
