College in Japan involves a lot of drinking, partying, lecture-skipping, and more drinking. And clubs -- or usually circles, less serious, more casual gatherings than the serious clubs that kurabu stands for (if a character is in a kurabu, as opposed to saakuru, they're probably serious sportsmen and not just afterschool tea-timers; note that sometimes translators translate "saakuru" as "clubs" because "circle" doesn't have that use in native English).

There are some anime set in it, the most famous is probably Honey and Clover (some other examples: "Nodame Cantabile" in the earlier seasons, "Moyashimon," or even "Love Hina" for the two main leads, albeit you would easily note how little importance is placed in the eventual Toudai experience). There are plenty of manga covering it, though not nearly as much as high school insofar as translated manga goes.

The problem, you see, is that the college element in those works of fictions are rarely the central concern; they're just backgrounds, sometimes stages for the drama to play out, but unlike high schools, which a Japanese student's life revolves around, the college age lifestyle in Japan doesn't quite engage so deeply with the "college" part of setting.

High school, however, is something most audiences would identify with, deeply, so there's no surprise it's such a "clichéd" place to put your romance/action/comedy/drama/porn in.

So...?

Japanese "female" literature, from shoujo manga to fashion magazines, do that just fine. As for the boys, there's always porn and hormone and no need for encouragement.

I get your point, but to be fair, I haven't seen a lot of actual sex in most high school-based anime shows. In a way, I think a lot of them actually encourages waiting to have sex (waiting until you're in a committed relationship with someone, I mean).

I didn't generalized actually. It's just disturbing whenever it pops out (side characters doing did it or hinted that they did it...)

Is Toudai like Japanese Harvard or Yale?

It's probably the states symbol of Japan in terms of education.

And what exactly are you going to do about this deviant nation and the terrible influence of flashy fashion magazines on the pure, pure loli minds of its youth? Nuke Japan? Burn their books? In comparison to popular culture in general, and barring porn, anime sexuality can be downright conservative. Something about misogyny and purity obsession in certain parts of the otaku subculture.

I suggest, oh I don't know, condoms.

Plenty of campus books. They just happen to be outside of the otaku field of interest, mostly, and definitely outside of the Western anime fandom.

Occasionally -- very occasionally -- they get adapted into anime, like the novel Tatami Galaxy.

Or you could just take Genshiken. There's another one there.

Again, what are common between these examples? Clubs/circles play a bigger role than lectures and professors (real Japanese college students skip classes a lot), going out with friends and club members for karaoke or bars are just as common as the campus life itself, and if the story stretches long enough, there's the job search element where uncertain twenty-somethings try to figure out their places the world. Just like real life.

In short, these characters are (young) adults; their horizons are larger and their focus on their educational life not as total as the high school life. And, compared to the American idealization of college life, the Japanese take it much easier -- they're all kind of burned out after the rigorous regular education and the entrance exam process.

It's not that the college setting is completely missing; it's that when it's there, it's much less "conspicuous."

And if you want an adult post-college story, there are those too -- in novels, in manga, very rarely in anime (again) -- but they're not exactly central to the anime subculture.

It's the most prestigious university there.

There are also Kyoto University, Waseda, etc., but the "I want to be an overachiever" or "I'm a power clique elite" clichés translate directly to going to Toudai.

That reminds me of the "must be 18 years of age or 21 in some states" for pornographic material in the United States. On another note I find the whole "love hotel" thing to be pretty fascinating. It's actually a somewhat ingenious idea when you consider the issues that led to their being somewhat of a necessity. The U.S. could benefit from such an industry, if you ask me.

Recent discussion has reminded me of this little gem. I completely understand why this cliche exists, but I do get tired of Japan being the center of the universe.

Granted these are Japanese anime, but I wish that we could see more creativity in setting. I'm of course not speaking of anime where you would obviously expect to see the setting be Japan, like in highschool slice of life shows and such. In sci-fi, fantasy harems, and other sorts of things though, I would like to see writers branch out a bit. I'd like to see more things like Gunslinger Girl, Soul Eater, and Mushishi (which I feel was ambiguous about its setting). I find myself yearning for those more classic times where authors waved goodbye to Japan and created their own worlds, or at the very least trivialized the location and did their own thing with a familiar basis. I don't hate it though, and I suppose it's not really cliche.

Not even necessarily Miyazaki, or even Studio Ghibli sorts of things.

I've seen a lot of fantastic anime that cast off the shackles of Japanese society and did what they wanted to do. Often times via geographical setting, and sometimes by removing the culture. Take Darker Than Black, for instance. DTB is set in Japan but you never see that typical Japanese culture. It's nothing more than a place. The same applies to Ghost in the Shell. I suppose this is more of a trend with anime (and manga, naturally) focused on younger audiences. It's always the highschool setting with the typical Japanese stuff. That's a mold that you can break though, like Mobile Suit Gundam did. It doesn't always have to be typical highschool kid ascending to a new plane of existence in the world. GoSick and Ikoku Meiro no Croisee are good examples of taking Japanese culture and implanting bits and pieces of it elsewhere, and that's equally fantastic. Despite having sort of dropped Ikoku Meiro, I thought the premise of the show was amazing and I loved watching it because of that inventive setting. Taking Japanese culture and sticking it elsewhere was an amazing idea, because crossing cultures is just great in fiction and in real life. It's good fun.

What!? What 'benefits' could there possibly be!? The last thing teens need is more encouragement and convenient places to have sex!

I don't know if it's quite fair to ask this of anime when TV shows and movies made in America normally put America as the center of the universe. The biggest action blockbusters have two cities: Manhattan or L.A.
So asking Japan to stop using Tokyo as a setting definitely makes us hypocrites.

Either Japan is center of the universe in Japanese things, or we get stuff taking place outside of Japan where everyone magically speaks Japanese for no discernible reason.

Which one you want?!

I hate it when nukes are avoided and replaced with weapons that are functionally exactly the same. Yes I know Japan got nuked so it's touchy but if that's the case why have the WMD play a role in the first place? Retarded.

I hate it when a character is reduced to his/her archetype, with no variation or surprises.

I hate it when the male/female ratio is massively skewed in a situation where it really shouldn't be (i.e. school).

I hate it when an anime fails to go "outside the box"; it has a typical high school/guys + lots of girls environment, a few characters to embody the popular archetypes, and despite whatever unique premise it may have had still feels really, really typical. There was a show, Gunparade March, where Japan was like the only country left, yet everything there still looked normal and everyone acted like they would in peacetime. There was literally no effort on the part of the producers to create the extreme wartime atmosphere that should've been been present for like 98% of the series.
