Harvard professor seeks 'adventurous' woman to give birth to baby Neanderthal

Quote:
A Harvard professor is looking for an "adventurous" woman to give birth to a baby Neanderthal.

It may sound like the plot of another Jurassic Park sequel, but the request is actually part of Professor George Church’s real-life plan to bring our long-extinct relative back to life.

Professor Church of Harvard Medical School is one of the world’s leading geneticists and believes his Neanderthal bone-sample analysis is now complete enough to reconstruct their DNA.

Asteroid-mining 'FireFlys' will be ready for action by 2015, vows space firm:

"A second commercial venture to mine the near infinite resources of outer space
has been started, and Deep Space Industries (DSI) is promising its spacecraft and
3D printers will allow successful mining operations within a decade.

The venture says that it will have its first class of 55lb (25kg) "FireFly" probes
ready for action by 2015, hitching a ride on other commercial launches, and during
their six-month missions will explore Near Earth Objects (NEO) for useful
materials."

Come to thimk of it, the higher levels of consumerism and that "hypnopedia" thing scares me. Sure life is much simpler, but the lack of creative forces makes the World State no different from a zombie apocalypse.

But people are happy! They can go the Feelies all they want!

In Ford we trust.

(I find the allegories to Fordism in the book interesting, at the time Mass Production was still largely restricted the United States, and everyone else considered it a very dehumanizing process, robbing manufacture of any form of "craftsmanship". BNW is largely an extension of Mass Production principles to an absurd degree, except not only are products and parts standardized, but also the workers, who are themselves mass produced.)

Hydrogen on demand from silicon nanospheres - just add water:

"“Instant energy, just add water” – you might expect the expression under an
ACME label in an old Warner Bros cartoon, but not from a University.

However, researchers at the University of Buffalo in New York have demonstrated
that nano-particles of silicon react with water to produce the non-toxic silicic acid
and release hydrogen. The reaction is well known, but the university says using
10nm spheres of silicon works 1,000 times faster than bulk silicon."

What do you do with the silicic acid?

MP3 files written as DNA with storage density of 2.2 petabytes per gram.

Posted mostly because this makes the False Minoshiros from Shin Sekai Yori a posibility in the real world.

VLT's NACO instrument reveals a triple cosmic collision
http://www.eso.org/public/news/eso0755/

Now this is cool. Never seen it before.

After looking and reading up on galactic collisions, I've often wondered what a triple (or more) collision would look like.

I thought galactic collisions are impossible since even if a galaxy is a "structure", each star is light years apart so they'll just went through each other . Though, I guess merging does make sense.

they do collide, though obviously not in the traditional sense as the scale is vastly different.

That said, hardly all stars are light years apart, especially the closer you move towards the core.

What is colliding is the gravitational fields. There may be all sorts of local disaster of individual systems (being moved too close to radiation sources, etc).

that nice roundish "gravity well" of the galaxy becomes a chaotic mess. And, of course, each has a mega black hole at the center going OM NOM NOM.

Scientists Are Making a Vaccine for Alcoholism That Will Give You Terrible Hangovers:

"Though most borderline alcoholics don't need an anti-fun vaccine for alcoholism,
those that drink a little too much could probably use the world's first vaccine for
alcoholism. Made by Scientists in Chile, the vaccine "works" by screwing over people
who drink. Seriously, once you pump yourself with the juice, you'll experience the
worst hangover of your life."

New lab could unlock vast potential of seabed methane ice:

"The University of California, Irvine has been granted $1 million to develop a unique
laboratory for the research of clean energy obtained from methane hydrates, an
as-yet untapped source of methane gas that exists in huge quantities in some
ocean-floor environments."

"Currently, the most conservative estimate is that there are between 500 and
2,500 gigatonnes of carbon in submarine gas hydrate deposits, the majority of
which are in the form of methane."

Ultra HD Anime on Japanese TV “By 2014″:

"Anime in 3840×2160 “2160p” UHDTV resolutions should be available by the
summer of 2014, as the Japanese government is pressing for the rollout of 4K
UHDTV 2 years ahead of schedule in an effort to save the TV industry from collapse.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications had formerly intended to
introduce the next generation of HDTV in 2016, but has announced it will be bringing
this goal forward 2 years to July 2014, to hopefully coincide with the World Cup in
Brazil."

I thinks this is futile, many blu-rays releases have yet to fully exploit fully 1080p (low quality reel transfers, animation done in lower resolutions) and they expect people to toss away their TVs just to see the world cup in even higher resolution? do they really expect most TV corporations in the world wil shell the money to get new cameras and goverments to do a digital shutdown of "old" 1080p/mpeg2 just a few years after the analogic shutdown just because they want to rake some extra bucks?

There's also this quote from the article:

"However, none of this addresses the reasons fewer Japanese are watching TV in
the first place, something generally blamed on the atrocious quality of mainstream
TV, which will presumably remain unchanged even in UHDTV."

Bad TV programs are bad, no matter what resolution they're shown in.
