But in #1 it should be ‘before’ (=その前に) in place of ‘if I would’. Literally, “The phone rang when I decided to have a meal” And with better English it becomes, “I had a phone call just as I was about to have a meal”. ~ようとする - ”to try to do something”

My try: Because those who sincerely desire the establishment of truly friendly relations between Russia and Japan for 1000 years simply can’t go past this problem. (問題は日本とロシアの領土問題のことです) What does千年にわたる mean? Literally It means ‘to extend to 1000 years’. 直訳は"extend to 1000 years"ということです。 But here, does it refer to future or past? Because normally it’s like “they have been friends for 1000 years”. But here I’m a bit confused. It doesn’t look like we’ve been friends at all.

Thank for helping me last time.
I heard something like: それでは<???せ?>します。(if you'll excuse me) それでは。(until next time) An exchange between 2 bosses right after a business meeting. I can't seem to get the first phrase right. Can anyone help? |

Next question: あいつはわしを置いて死んだりわせん。
”わせん”? That is what I heard... And I've seen that "だり” ending for quite sometimes, what does it do? And is ”置いて” the right word to use? Edit: And this one too: わあああ!くえた! (oh sh**! I burn it)"くえた" is what I heard but I can't find anything related to "Burn?" Last edited by iLney; 2009-10-07 at 21:38. |

あいつはわしを置いてしんだりわせん(あのやつはわたしを置いて死んだりはせぬ)
↓↓ あの人は私を置いて死んだり消えたりなどはしない。 ”Aだり”express some verb include main A. ”Bを置いて”express "let B be" only this, and i don't know "くえた" i have double thought. ”もえた”or"食えた".(burn or can eat) "わあああ!"express surprise, but I don't know the situation. |

Thank you very much.
So the "あいつはわしを置いて死んだりわせん。" actually means "she won't leave me and die, or anything like that" ? And I can use "はせん" just like that? I've only seen ません so far, thx As for "くえた," a guy said that after he burns his おこのみやき。 |

Question I guess.
Not sure how "wa" and "ha" are used in conversational speech such as "watashi wa". I'm probably more exposed to "wa" than "ha", which contributes to my slight confusion. Is the hiragana same too, though I'm sure the "ha" hiragana's used for "wa".

The confusion only lies in the style of romaji a person wants to use to convey the japanese language. Quote:
But naturally, if a person was to write in japanese on the keyboard, they have to input 'ha', which is the error you caught me on. As it turned out before I even knew about the 'systems', I'm more partial to the Hepburn one it seems. There already has been a debate on this in the fansub thread in regards to karaoke lyrics on fansubs. In my opinion, I prefer to write romaji as it is phonetically said in the English language as that is the point of romaji in the first place, it just gets a wee bit 'tricker' when it comes to titles in various kinds of media. If anyone wanted to get picky about 'adhereing to the Japanese language', they lose the romaji. It's a basis for those with low or no reading literacy of the scripts, so the least we should be doing is phonetically writing it as accuratly as possible so a person doesn't naturally think: Watashi ha (as in ha ha, happy) onna desu 私は女です。 - It's pronounced as 'wa' though. sore wa, nan desu ka それは何ですか (sore wa) hanabi desu (それは)はなびです。 それは花火です。 You can also probably see why kanji helps to make reading easier Translation: I am a woman. What is that? Those are fireworks.

I know it'd be quite a daunting task, but I thought I'd at least throw out the idea of someone or a group of someones parsing down this thread to its educational bits, cleaning up the presentation and perhaps remaking the thread with more limited content parameters, and then perhaps having a secondary thread for discussion of related trivia/practicing your Japanese together?
I--and I'm sure many others--would really like to make use of such a resource to lay the foundations for understanding Japanese, but at present the thread's a bit bloated and disjointed. |

"は" of postpositional particle read "wa".
”こんにちは(今日は)"is"konnichiwa" small "ケ" in "三ヶ月"and "桐ヶ丘" read "ka" and "ga". "春夏冬" is "akinai(商い)".(spring summer winter are without autumn) At one time "はひふへほ" read "wa i u e wo(o)". old japan made these reading. now "は"and"へ"in”私は学校へ行く” are "wa"and"e",only these. |

Quick question, on Japanese "alphabetical order," as in hiragana ordering, the way it'd go in a dictionary...
For the versions with the dakuten... like, would it be ordered like this: かき(きゃきゅきょ)くけこがぎ(ぎゃぎゅぎょ)ぐげご Or like this: かがき(きゃきゅきょ)ぎ(ぎゃぎゅぎょ)くぐけげこご ? EDIT: Oh yeah, and does ぱ come first or does ば come first? EDIT2: Oh yeah also, where does っ go in the dictionary? For example, does いっしょ come first or いま in the dictionary?
