He had guns with him. Army training. And he knew that he was targeted. Yet, he couldn't defend himself.

But now, it's a curiosity as to the motive, because this was a planned attack.

It's an organized gang of criminals who did this as part of a premeditated hit. It's extremely hard to defend against something like that. A single person can't maintain readiness at all times, so the overwhelming advantage goes to the criminals who decide to initiate the attack. This is far out of the scope of regular criminal activity. Even if the person thinks he might be attacked.

Hopefully the FBI starts to really crack down on these white supremacist groups. Allot of people like to laugh about them, but they can be extremely dangerous at times.

Personally, I think they and their religious dominionist zealot fringe buddies are the biggest "terrorist" threat we have in the US. It doesn't matter if you're well-prepared or physically bigger/stronger - they run in packs. Even if you're just Joe and Jane public, if you're not white or you're with someone who isn't white - look out. They get particularly outraged at inter-racial couples (personal experience) so be wary when traveling.

I am not pro-China, however I stand with the China media on this issue.

Paper-bashing the corporation into serving the general population better is one hell of a good way to go. It is also a political card played incredibly well.

Japan Shifting Further Away From Pacifism

Quote:
The new assertiveness has been particularly apparent under the new prime minister, Shinzo Abe, a conservative who has increased military spending for the first time in 11 years. With China’s maritime forces staging regular demonstrations of their determination to control disputed islands in the East China Sea and North Korea’s new leader issuing daily proclamations against the United States and its allies, Mr. Abe’s calls for a bolder, stronger military are getting a warmer welcome in Japan than similar efforts in the past.

“This is a very serious rethink of Japan’s security,” said Satoshi Morimoto, defense minister in the last administration, who was an architect of changes in Japan’s defense policy.

Until recently, a simulated battle against Chinese forces [the "Iron Fist" exercises describe in the article] would have been unthinkably provocative for Japan, which renounced the right to wage war — or even to possess a military — after its march across Asia in World War II resulted in crushing defeat. The purely defensive forces created in 1954 are still constrained from acting in too offensive a manner: last year, a smaller mock assault by Japanese and American forces on an island near Okinawa was canceled because of local opposition.

That recalculation — a large step in what analysts see as a creeping over the years toward a more robust Japanese military — could have broad implications for the power balance in the region, angering China and likely giving the United States a more involved partner in its pivot to Asia to offset China’s extended reach.

At the same time, the Japanese public has more fully embraced the once-discredited Self-Defense Forces. That is in part because of anxiety over China and North Korea, but also because of the military’s prominent humanitarian presence after the 2011 tsunami.
At least they gave these exercises an appropriate name, "Iron Fist," rather than the recent American approach of labeling acts of warfare as somehow humanitarian in nature like "Operation Provide Comfort" or "Enduring Freedom."

Oh, and here is the DPRK's newest provocative announcement as they try to get the rest of the world to take them seriously: North Korea Threatens to Restart Nuclear Reactor. Officially, China "feels regretful" about the decision.

In other news, it appears pretty certain that Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of assassinated US President John F. Kennedy, will be appointed the next Ambassador to Japan.
Quote:
Ms. Kennedy does not have any obvious connection to Japan, but she would arrive in Tokyo as a kind of celebrity — a member of one of America’s most famous families and someone close to the president. Sending her to Tokyo would continue a long presidential tradition of appointing well-known American political figures to the post. Former American ambassadors to Japan include Walter F. Mondale, the former vice president; Mike Mansfield, the former Senate majority leader; and Thomas S. Foley, the former speaker of the House.
I'll just observe that her father's choice for this post was Japanese historian and Harvard professor Edwin O. Reischauer.

Lawyer seeks same-time verdict for 377A cases

Quote:
Human rights lawyer M Ravi on Tuesday appealed to Singapore’s High Court to issue its judgment on two ongoing constitutional challenges to its controversial gay law at the same time.

In a letter sent to Justice Quentin Loh, who is presiding over the case brought forward by Ravi’s client Tan Eng Hong, as well as the case of couple Gary Lim and Kenneth Chee, the lawyer expressed concerns that verdicts being issued one after another may compromise the outcome of the case that receives judgment later.

Pointing out that Tan was in 2010 arrested, charged and detained under Section 377A of the Penal Code — which criminalises consensual intercourse between men — Ravi argued that his client should be permitted to submit arguments in front of any hearing on the constitutionality of the law.

“Further, the Court of Appeal must have the benefit of the fullest possible arguments prior to issuing any judgment on such an important constitutional question,” he wrote, adding that Tan in his case had raised issues not brought forward in the case of Lim and Chee.

Ravi expressed his hope that in the interest of “a fair trial and access to justice”, judgment for both cases will be issued together so that appeals can be joined and heard together, in the interest of all parties involved, since both cases challenge the constitutionality of the Section.

Tan’s case against Section 377A began after he was charged under the act in 2010 for engaging in fellatio with another man in a toilet cubicle in a mall. After Ravi questioned its constitutionality, prosecutors modified the charges they placed against him to committing an obscene act in public, for which Tan and his partner were fined $3,000 each.

The case of Lim and Chee was brought forward to the High Court in late November last year, after the couple, who have been together for 15 years, did not want to be labelled as criminals. Their case was heard before Justice Loh in mid-February this year, while Tan’s case was heard in early March.

When contacted, one of the two lawyers representing Lim and Chee said they would be agreeable to Justice Loh’s judgment being issued either separately or together.

“I don’t think it’s our place to request when a judgment is to be issued,” said Choo Zheng Xi, who is assisting senior counsel Peter Low with Lim’s and Chee’s case. “We are happy to leave this in the judge’s good hands.”
I demand that they be punished throughly for their obscene act in public, whether 377A is absurd or not.

The innocence and purity of Singapore's younger generations are at stake here.

Countries Ranked by Military Strength (2013) by Country

Quote:
The GFP ranking makes use of over 40 factors to determine each nation's Power Index ("PwrIndx") score. From this score, the finalized ranking is generated. The factors are set within our algorithm which provides a fair canvas and allows smaller, technologically advanced nations to compete with larger, lesser-developed ones. Additionally, various bonuses and penalties are added for refinement. In the end, we hope it presents an unbiased ranking and realistic outlook on the potential conventional military firepower and strength of a given country for a given year. At the very least, this list can be used to stir healthy debate amongst visitors to GFP.

There are a total of 68 countries in the GFP database. Keep in mind that the final rankings are always being fine-tuned based on new data becoming available as well as feedback. The last major update occurred on 2/17/2013.

I am quite surprised we made it to that list, considering we spend about 0.5% of GDP in the military (and most of it probably goes to page wages) and we do not have any big navy or air force to brag about.

There's a couple of surprise on this one, for example Italia and Brazil being into the top 10 or India being so high.

If it were not already banned by UN treaties, I'd propose Japan start up a Japanese Space Self Defense Forces. Designed to block ballistic missiles and giant rocks from space. Side benefit...orbital supremacy trumps air supremacy if you can pick off a tank from orbit without much fear of return fire.
