agreed, he didn't seem that spineless in the first volume. And he definitely isn't spineless and wimpy in the more recent novels. At least lets hope that changes soon in the anime , i can't stand more wimpy lead characters right now.

My review of episode 1.
I'm not familiar with the series - so this is just from a perspective of the anime itself as a stand-alone effort. I didn't *dislike* it. I'm fond of the Shinto motifs and use of elemental mysticism. The characters seem fairly interesting and the voicework of the kitsune herself is entertaining. The art seems a bit drab (I did like the surreal moments with the snake spirit's form) and the animation doesn't really "light fire". But those aren't a problem if the story holds strong. Biggest nit at the moment is that the editing of the episode itself seemed really awkward, rushed and that problem was not helped by the musical scoring. The music just failed to connect with the scene moods very well. Hopefully, they were just trying to GET to a certain point in the character relationships ("the gang gets together and is introduced") and this wierd broken rushed feeling of the edits will subside. We'll definitely give it a few more episodes to find its feet.

well he is changing with the times i suppose. I like how they are making all the super natural paranormal entities so easily melds into modern culture. Lets just say a land god running a convenience store seems perfectly normal compared to what some other deity/gods do for a living these days in this anime.

As much as I dislike weak male leads, especially in harem type shows (then again the whole weak male lead is what makes these harem shows), when you live a somewhat normal life and then you are faced something you have never experienced before such as being attacked by a supernatural being, it is quite reasonable for them to scream and be spineless. It probably would be my first reaction as well, especially if you know you cannot defend yourself, or do not know how.

Same can be said for Tooru, but he is the younger brother, no matter what Noboru should protect him if he really considers him to be his sibling. Unless it is either Tooru being ignorant towards danger or that Noboru is the type to just run away and save himself.
