Well, this episode was a typical Da Capo episode. Enjoyable as other Da Capo episodes.
Though, not having any attachment at all with Otome, it turned out to be a "mah-mah" episode.

Lots of Otome, and Yoshiyuki-Otome bonding. She can use magic, not a surprise though.
And for a reason I can probably guess, accidents are happening a lot.
Magician of Justice, Detective Otome (seriously, the lines she spouted at the end were detective-like...), enlists Baka-Yoshi and prepare to solve the mystery of the accidents.

Not much Yume, though we get a scene of her standing outside the door and being dark while listening to Yoshiyuki and Otome talk to each other.
I'll resist using a certain two word phrase...

Koko... doesn't look good either. Wonder if it has something to do with the damn tree. Hope she doesn't start coughing up flower petals like a certain someone in the first season.

Oh my Jun is old!

Well I think it was just cruel of Anzu to pair up Koko and Yoshiyuki in that puppet show thing. She should know by now that they have split up ~ or that Koko is good at hiding things.

I confess that I am an otome fan but for some reason, her backstory isn't that attractive. I don't really feel the angst that goes with her feelings and troubles. What I do feel is that she is making too much of a fuss over a "broken" promise. It is natural for people to forget (and just typical that Yoshiyuki contracts the amnesia and not Otome ).

Mah...but still it follows the classic Da capo style. I was hoping for more seen as it is Otome, though I suspect that there is more to this later.

Her talk about justice and all that reminds me of shirou...oh god XD

Fantastic. They're correcting just about everything that I didn't like about the previous season. I thought they more or less ignored half the cast last time, and now said half of the cast is getting plenty of screen-time, development and all that. I also thought that, despite being an obsessed Minatsu-fanboy, focusing the entire last season on her was a bad idea. Her story just wasn't all that interesting, especially compared to the plot they're currently following, which has the potential to be at least as good as the very first season was, if not better. And I was wondering if we'd be seeing Jun'ichi again. Though this just raises a random question which I don't really expect them to answer: Is Nemu dead? Or is she just not around at the moment for some reason? Oh, and Yume and Otome had some really annoying voices when they were kids. If there's one thing I would have done differently about this season, it would be this: Please don't make it so obvious who's gonna end up with Yoshiyuki... I'm pretty sure I know who it'll be by now...

I thought that was a wonderful DaCapo episode. Otome has been a non-presence for over a dozen episodes, but now they make up for all that by giving her real feeling, at least for me. And I thought Yoshiyuki was at his best, such as it is. Sure, it's hard on Yume. And sure, Otome will step in for Koko (reminders of KimiKiss and other shows). The flag is up for Otome-Yoshiyuki and Otome is suddenly a full character and the right one to be the destined girl. Go, Takagaki Ayahi. Can anyone hear Noe in that voice? I sure can't.

As if anyone needed a hint that this episode was extremely important, this episode dished out the clues out in droves:

• They already prepped us for it by showing the last half of the main flashback in the first season (along with the hint about the "promise")
• Many other flashbacks to expand the backstory
• It ties together all the goings-on of this season (the play, the mysterious accidents/crimes, along with Yoshiyuki and Otome's "connection" ("iishin doutai"))
• Reappearance of Junichi -- obviously extremely important to D.C.
• Explanation of how Yoshiyuki learned the wagashi magic
• Reference the photo album shown in the ED (major hint)
• Continued transitionary role of Koko (as if the first season wasn't hint enough)
• Lots and lots of sakura petals

Deathkillz wondered why she was making such a big deal about the forgotten promise. She sort of was, and sort of wasn't; it's not really the promise, it's what the promise represents. The answer was given in the flashback. (By the way, in case people are worried about source material spoilers, this is entirely based on the anime, but it lines up with the game 100%.) Before Junichi taught Yoshiyuki to use magic, Otome was somewhat of a loner, and kept her distance from him and even her family. You could say that she was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders thanks to her magical ability (and self-proclaimed role: a magician of justice). Yoshiyuki's magic became a bridge to Otome's heart, and she was able to open up to him and no longer feel alone in the world. That's why that "iishin doutai" promise is so important, and why she's so close to Yoshiyuki. With all the recent goings-on, Otome has been feeling the weight of her burden once again, but as before hasn't been opening up to anyone. She didn't want to impose on Yoshiyuki (i.e. presume he'd still remember and believe in that childhood promise), which is why it was important that he remembered the promise himself and wanted to fulfill it. It wasn't just the promise, it was the fact that, as when she was a child, she no longer has to carry the burden alone. I guess you could say that she sort of sees Yoshiyuki as a soulmate, but as he was growing up they began to naturally dift apart (see season one).

Anyway, I continue to be surprised by how they're loading the early episodes with revelations in a completely different sequence. I guess this is what happens when you try to fit 15+ hours of material in 13 episodes and want to keep more of the cast involved along the way. So far so good, though.

Also wanted to reply to one little bit (replying to the whole post won't profit anyone):

I really didn't see it that way at all. What Yoshiyuki demonstrated in that episode (and in episode 13 of the first season) is an uncertainty about how to act towards Koko since he recognizes that he hurt her feelings. In other words, I don't think he feels he has the right to think about whether he loves her or not at this point, given what he put her through. In both episode 13 and 1, he was sort of walking on egg-shells, not believing it possible that Koko truly "got over it", while Koko has been trying her darnedest to put on a brave face and show that she really wants things to go back to the way they once were. I'm just not sure how Yoshiyuki's behaviour can be perceived as "apathy", when he's deliberately trying to be aware of his impact on her (i.e. he feels guilty). I don't see any inconsistnecy from either Yoshiyuki or the writers, nor doing I see it as being "uncompassionate". I honestly don't know how we read the emotions of that episode so differently (then again, that's why I said I didn't think it would profit anyone for me to reply to the rest of the post either -- totally different worlds, or something).

It make more sense if you put it that way. Though I do believe that this is some character flaw in Otome, just goes to show that you can't be perfect. As heartless as I may sound, I find her personality here rather naive. Yes she does have magical powers, but no one is telling her that she needs to protect the world or anything. Okey I forgive her seen as it was long ago, but you would think that she has grown out of such dreams already. Is there a reason behind why she wants to see herself as a protector of justice so much? To the extent she is harming herself by being depressed (and over nothing imo).

All I can say is: "hold that thought." Since they're going to great lengths to flesh out that "character flaw", it stands to reason that it'll developed over the course of the show. And you're right -- all mages in the Da Capo franchise begin their respective stories with some sort of a flaw, and there's a pretty good reason for that...

In general, it seems to me that you're worrying about a lot of minor details that (generally) don't greatly impact the plot...

Spoiler:

1. Not sure exactly, but the point of the scene is that Suginami's up to his usual mischief and big sister (and Student Council President) Otome caught Yoshiyuki getting involved in it (and is trying, in her big-sisterly way, to make sure he stays out of it).

2. や、昔はお前も素直でかわいかったなーって思ってさ I think I probably got that wrong too (not sure how to do the little "naaa...tte" thing properly), but he's saying (basically) that her (honesty/docility/meekness/etc. -- her attitude, more or less) as a kid was cute, which Yume correctly saw as a backhanded way of pointing out that she wasn't like that anymore (since she's so sarcastic with him now). It's typical Yoshiyuki-Yume banter.

3. I assume he's just annoyed because she's taking his share of the food, as always happens, but I didn't double-check.

4. As far as I can tell, it was just a news report about the fire that happened at a house on Hatsunejima; Yoshiyuki and Yume's comments suggest that it's been happening a lot recently (as we already know). Wasn't paying that much attention to the details of the report.

5. I don't know what he's saying specifically, but I assume it's something to that basically amounts to "eat it before it gets cold" (put a different way).

6. This is straight from the puppet show script. Sharuru is asking Etto what present he wants, and says that she'll give anything to him because she loves him. You'll understand what this means in context when you see the play itself -- soon...

7. Basically "That's why we're practicing, right?"

8. I'm not sure, but I think what he's saying is that he's getting the feelings all wrong for Etto's part, to which Otome points out that she can identify with Sharuru's feelings (which is why it comes easily for her). He then follows by suggesting that she should perform the part for real, which she denies because, she says (more or less), her Sharuru is for him alone.

9. I think it's その低度の約束 -- in other words, she's saying (paraphrase) "It was such an important promise to me, but it clearly doesn't mean much to you."

Thanks a lot for your help. Now the puppet show part is much clearer for me.
Also I just figured, the verb 'to spell' is irregular. At first I put it wrong and I even woke up in the morning because of that.
I'm worrying about minor details because I was asked to make a translation and I'm typing the script at the moment. So I completely miss the part with TV report, probably the most difficult point in the episode.
Of course the general idea is usually clear but my level of japanese is far from getting all the words.

I'll take my jab at this one (I consider myself rather good on conversational Japanese, as long as no extremely heavy meaning words come out ):

when Otome told him "...その低度の約束" it litterally means: "for you it was a low-value/significance promise"...OTOH 重要な約束 means very important promise...

As for Anzu's line:
The flow of the conversation was:

Koko: Sorry I was kinda spacing out...
Anzu: Don't, you're not Yoshiyuki
Yoshiyuki: Why am I being pulled into this?
Anzu: Because you (Yoshiyuki) are always like that (spacing out)

So I guess "今までが今までだから" means "since you've always been like that, even now"... meaning Anzu is telling Yoshiyuki "Because you're always spacing out, even now" (additionally, I felt Anzu had another meaning when she told him this, I thought she was referring to his denseness on certain matters, just a hunch though...)

actually, I'm surprised how hard it is to translate some simple, everyday lines! Even today I'm confused how to answer when people ask me what "ganbatte" litterally means (don't give up!, fight hard!, keep it up! the list goes on...)

I'm still learning, right now I'm at a point where I'm comfortable conversing with japanese only speakers and capable of reading some novels (for practise, I'm currently reading the latest full metal panic novel along with a couple of mangas). But still, I've got a long way to go, vocabulary and kanji are my biggest weaknesses, and things like this help me a lot
