i think the weirdest and funniest title would have to be Gundam SEED..

but seriously, when i heard about this new Gundam OVA coming out and when i heard it was titled Gundam UNICORN, i was like... "so gay..."

but hey, never judge an anime by it's title..

Why does everyone think Unicorns a 'Gay' 'Girly' etc. I have the opposite image.

Unicorns are dangerous animals!

When I first heard about Gundam Unicorn, I cringed like mad and tried to avoid it as much as possible.

Then I watched the 00 movie.

Spoiler:

Out of sheer desperation I picked up Gundam UC.

I shat rainbows for its pure awesomeness.

Never felt so stupid that I haven't followed it from the start.

UC will do that. I can't stand the elitists but there's a reason it's the backbone of the franchise.

Cultural differences. There's been cultures, present and past, that see the Unicorn as a symbol of something of something other than homosexuality. Western medieval and enlightenment eras for example. Then there are people who focus on the horn.

Actually it's Kidou Senshi Gundam U.C. - with Unicorn in subtext. So when you write or print the text it is to be written as UC, but when you say it out you are suppose to say Unicorn, which is quite a typical Japanese word play. In magazines such as Hobby Japan they also use U.C. to refer to the series and Unicorn to refer to the actual MS to not cause confusion, which is probably a Bandai directive. Also they went with the printed U.C. name more because they want to market it as a series that is in the UC calendar.

However in the west they are marketing this as "Mobile Suit Gundam UC". so they definitely feel the same way about "Unicorn"...
In the west do actually say it as UC? That would be the factor to judge whether they actually feel the Unicorn name being embarrassing or not (which I highly doubt they do considering years of embarrassing titles from Japan which takes little to no consideration of western taste and cultural preferences in mind).

As for why Westerners find unicorns gay, blame My Little Ponies toys? I'm sure most kids would've seen their fair share of girls play with those toys.....

No, every reference to it in the West (that I know of) has it as "Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn".

Read the news, note what they are calling the show.

Yes, I was referring to the readings. Obviously it is written differently, as with most other Gundam titles.

Due to cultural differences though, this doesn't really apply in the west, so Bandai usually writes out the pronunciations of the titles, ie Zeta Gundam or Turn A Gundam as opposed to Z Gundam and ∀ Gundam.

So the fact that they are referring to Gundam Unicorn in the west as just Gundam UC is pretty significant.

So why do people fight, anyway?
Perhaps the meaning of existence lies within their will to fight.
People feel a sense of accomplishment through battle.
And it’s also a fact that the ones actually fighting are never perceived as being tainted.

Gundam UC, but in print. Just like I pointed out, it is written in Japanese as 機動戦士ガンダムUC.

The Japanese writes the title and then put the pronunciation in brackets.

Again, in print they have standardised UC as the written method across the board in every language, for example the official title in Chinese is "機動戰士高達/鋼彈UC" and NOT "機動戰士高達/鋼彈獨角獸" which would be how it is if you write it out as Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, plus the webpage you've pointed is actually written by Japanese people in English, so the Japanese writer might simply be following the protocol to write it as UC, rather than a delibrate dodge of the word. Again you have to actually point to a case where, say, an English announcer actually *reading* it out as UC in a video trailer for your argument to work.

It will be best to remember that, in essence, what this project is about. A love letter to the UC calendar.

The Unicorn part is just an after thought that happen to go in line with the tradition to have the title including the featured protagonist mech.

I wouldn't say that though, there's plenty of references to the French poem as well as usage of the imageries of unicorn in the novel from start to end to discount the theory that using unicorn as a symbol of the main mecha as well as the plot key is an after-thought. Rather, I would say shortening Unicorn, which is proper word, into the abbreviation of U.C. for the title, was a deliberate marketing ploy to deeply associate the work with the UC calendar.

I am still rather confused, what is the laplace box? I understand that Gundam was the key, but they didn't really explain what is the box.

WAY too much of a spoiler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And this is for the anime thread; as far as we're concerned when posting here, the novels don't exist and we have no idea what's going to happen.

Aw, come on!

There has to be a reason why they showed that at the beginning then.

And hush, you! He/She's gonna read the novel and ruin it for him/herself.
