If it's just a case that Yuu avoided something fairly straightforward, I take back what I said; it's just that the reaction of the rest of the Shiraitodai team seemed to suggest that avoiding Sumire's attack was something very unusual, which in turn looked like Yuu was using some special power that has sprung out of nowhere.

I have this feeling that what happened in this chapter is similar to what happened with Kuro.. that is to say, she did something out of her usual habit and thus why she could avoid direct hits. We still don't know how exactly Sumire's ability work, but I don't think it's pure godly luck like Saki. I think it's either manipulating her enemies to discard her winning tiles or perhaps high-perceptive ability that could foreseen what her enemies will discard next. If it's not the latter, I don't think she needs any special power to avoid direct hit but only an act that is out of Sumire's predictions (like Hisa who always tries to do hell wait).

That page seems hinting that she did something different (perhaps something like what Kuro did) than Sumire's prediction and thus making her be able to avoid direct hits...

Though I think it's best to wait for the full RAW before going deeper into this. If she really does have another special power... well, at least they've managed to get stronger in one day..however unthinkable it is.

I'm going with Yuu trying something different from usual, not even Saki does stuff like giving established characters new powers out of nowhere, and besides, she probably got some inspiration after seeing Kuro discarding a dora, after all, she knows better than anyone how important that was to her, so maybe she decided this match requires something different, especially when you have a sniper pointing at your neck.

And as for why Shiraitodai looks so shocked, maybe they just thought Yuu would be as predictable as Kuro, and therefore, easy prey. Maybe Yuu did some sort of particular play that no one expected using a "cold" tile, but nothing of the hax sort.

Wow, this Achiga-hen is much more exciting than I thought. (Maybe because it isn't so one-sided).

Achiga may be stronger than we thought. And Akado's work in preparing them is finally beginning to show.

First, the "find the Dragon King back" operation. Akado aims to let Kuro recover her doras before the finals.

Second, she taught Yuu about Sumire's slight movement in her right hand, and her sight of focus, which dictates the one she's aiming for. Because of that, Yuu managed to hit Sumire directly for 12,000.

Nice.

Poor Izumi. She wants to be the strongest Year 1. But now, you're having a rough ride with 3 third-years.

Yoshiko is pretty steady as well. She is definitely not there to complete the table, that's for sure.

Lastly, Teru. Alright, Teru will finally show her true powers in the finals. And she was the one who saw through that other schools had possibly realised Sumire's habits when playing.

Really looking forward to the anime.

P.S: The other three of Shiraitodai has spoken. Awai is an imouto-chara?!?!?

I wonder who will be voicing them.

She just got aimed at alot of times... Same thing as what we did when we PVP each other in a PVP match.(I play such games before keep getting aimed for using a newbie unit or being too big)

Sumire has the ability to ron off the opponent who is in Tempai. When her opponent's hand reach tempai, the tile that her opponent discards in that turn will be Sumire's wining tile. (Look like she has to "aim" in advance)

Yuu countered this by -

(when her hand is inTempai from a draw)
1. Looking for "a sign" If Sumire is aimimg to ron off her discard or not.
2. If yes, Yuu will pass her tempai chance (i.e. discard other tiles that make her hand not in tempai (at this point Sumire's arrow will "miss" )
3. Progress her hand normally. Try to be in tempai again(Sumire ability won't work on Yuu again because her waiting tile is not Yuu's discard anymore)
3.5 Predict Sumire's hand using the data from the tile that she's waiting.
4. Ron!

The translation I read summarises Sumire like this:

Sumire is known as the Sharpshooter. She picks her target to get a ron off.

Akado actually prepared Yuu for Sumire, by showing her past matches. Sumire has a tendency to move her right hand slightly once she starts her move. Following that, her eyes will shift around, picking her target. (Just like pulling the arrow back from the bow)

That's how Yuu knows who she's targetting. To avoid her attack, she cannot play normally cause she will play into Sumire. We see that happened with Izumi.

Thus, Yuu "dodges" her arrow by taking another route and form her hand.

Sumire's weakness lies in if she fails to hit her target, she will also change her hand. That's where Yuu actually capitalize and hit Sumire for 12,000.

Ok, let's go by order.

-The part with Nodoka felt even more irrelevant in the manga. Also, Yuuki looks horrible in achiga's style, even though Nodoka looks just fine.

-Teatime with Shiraitodai. Now, that I didn't see coming. And Teru's face looks so dull outside of the table. That is the face of someone who only feels alive playing mahjong. No mistress matters, they're only means for an end, it's all about the tiles. That's Teru's sin.

-"You didn't use it this time. That one that goes like whu-whu-whee"... Awai, what are you talking about? So, no surprise here, but yeah, we have yet to see the true Teru train. Oh Yuuki, you poor thing, unknowing of true despair crawling onto your very soul with every passing second...

-YES!, Kuro finally realized the true ordeal, no, the ODDYSEY behind the match agaisnt Teru, or rather she was told about it, and she reacted in the most proper way: with tears.

-"Hanada-san...you suffered the biggest point loss, yet smiled the most"
HOW CAN I NOT HAVE A CRYING WAVER IMAGE IN MY ENTIRE HD!?

-Harue is acting like a coach! What is this wizardry!?

-"A ritual to revive the dragon?". Even for Saki, that wording is a bit outhere. So, to reactivate the dora magnet after discarding a dora you don't need time, just to play a bunch of matches in a row, and practice matches count, even without a group of 4. That almost feels like cheating considering what we have seen of Kuro's skill so far, but it definetly makes things easier for achiga, since I'm sure many of us thought Kuro would have to make do without the favors of the dragon in the finals. This also confirms it was Kuro's mindset and nothing else holding her back until now. Hopefully she learned the lesson.

-OH WOW! Izumi's face when she got ron'd by Shindouji's player was just priceless. And right after giving a big inner speech about going after Shiraitodai. DENIED.

-And then she gets owned again by our resident sniper

-And Shindouji makes another win right after that And speaking of that, it seems Shindouji has more of a plan than just using Kirame as a meat shield against Teru. One has to wonder why they would make one of their players change styles like that since they've already faced Shiraitodai before and found their way in. Maybe the prospect of facing both Shiraitodai AND Senriyama forced their hand.

-So, apparently, Shiraitodai's plan is to test the waters with every team to get a better feeling for whichever makes it to the finals with them. Until the captain's match, that is, which means Awai will be free to do her thing, whatever it is. A stealthy way to hype us even more for her.

-Harue keeps doing stuff! What is happening!? Is there a disturbance in the lesbian force!? Did a girl in the sakiverse go straight!? Anyway, Harue is finally proving to be worthy of her legend status by essentially giving Yuu the key to defeat Sumire, and it's something not even Teru is aware: A tell mark, something that hasn't really been used in Saki before, as far as I can remember. Good thinking, Harue, and good eyesight too.

-May I add, for a series that focuses so much on fantasy for the juiciest parts of its matches, Sumire's bow looks pretty damn modern.

-Yes, Teru is actually concerned about Toki. Who's the monster now?

-Looks like Sumire has a pretty short fuse when things don't go her way (And of course, it's Izumi who pays the price ). Didn't expect that from such a "student council president" looking character.

-The match doesn't end in one chapter? Awesome!
